Tomb Raider PC Performance Thread

I'm really eager to try this out. I'll have it unlocked by 8pm tonight I should expect. Can't wait to see what kind of performance I get in stereoscopic 3D. I'm not expecting 60 fps with tressFX, but killing DOF might get me there... fingers crossed. Doing S3D and depth of field together doesn't make any sense.

So anyone know what this will be like on an i7-720QM with 8GB of RAM and a Radeon 5850? I talked myself into buying it on Steam (had a bunch of Steam Wallet money left from last sale so I got it pretty cheap), it unlocks in like 3 hours (though I'm not planning on staying up, I'll play it tomorrow).

Wow this game looks GORGEOUS in @1920x1080. My problem is I can't play it at that resolution fullscreen. Whenever I start it up the game is locked to 720P because it apparently only supports 60hz full screen?? Anyway I tried the game in windowed mode and when it was at 1080 the difference was staggering and the performance seemed the same but with better IQ. I have my PC connected to my TV via HDMI and only 1280x720P works in 60hz. Anything else is 30hz and I wouldn't mind playing it at 30hz on 1080i but the game wont' let me choose it. Do I need a DVI or VGA cable?

TressFX is good looking but the performance hit on my 570 is too much, most times it's perfectly playable but if you get Lara's model close to the camera the frames dip to single digits. Wild framerate fluctuation is not really something I like.

It looks like it to me. The hair gets darker and has a different shine to it:

Also, I will say that although the Tress FX does have the hair hover over the shoulders, it's not as noticeable as it was in the benchmark.

Does the hair animate differently when it's wet?

wat? that cant be right, im not saying you're lying but maybe is an isolated problem for a few users?

I'm running this at 1080p with:

FX-8350 @ 4.4ghz
7870 2GB @ 1175/1375mhz

Here's what I got on Ultimate:

Here's what I got with TressFX turned off:

The second one is how I've been playing it and it rarely drops below 60fps. It looks amazing.

Hrm, I'm starting to think I may have to play with TressFX off. =( You've got the same GPU that I do. I'm almost tempted to drop down to 720p to see what it's like with everything cranked up.

This affects a few of my games. The culprits are this, Crysis 3 and the original Crysis. I can get the Crysis 1 to work by running it in DX9 mode. Basically the game doesn't let me select a resolution higher than my 1280x720P which my tv runs @ 60hz. I just now plugged a VGA cable into the computer to the TV and now windows shows 1360x768 as my recommended resolution and Tomb Raider is able to choose that res also. I don't quite like the IQ with the VGA cable everything looks slightly blurry and hazy.

Have the same setup except my 2600k is at 4.2 I hope it runs well. I should be done downloading in about 45 minutes and I'll post some results. Why no overclocking?

have no need for it so far, maybe one day but every game i play runs fine with stock speeds, please let me know how you fare with the game performance

I think the problem with the 670 card is the general tessellation feature, as others already posted.

I can confirm that the game ran fine after I turned it off, haven't encountered any problem since.

Still getting great performance with my setup at 1600p. My average FPS when playing is 63fps. Would have done PNG but imgur compresses anything over 1mb if you don't have a pro account. =/

Screengrab kind of shitty too, don't really know how to properly do it. Oh well.

Here is a direct link to a better non-compressed version.

How much effect downgrade is there on a 670 with tessellation turned off?

If it's not a big deal, I'll just play the game. But if a lot of pretty bells and whistles disappear, I'll go get Vania or Atelier to play this week until an update is released.

What exactly IS your setup.

i7 3820 3.6 ghz (not OC it)
GTX 680 2gb SLI (OC those)
2560x1600p monitor (60hz)

I'm not entirely sure what's going on with SLI. I assume it's not working right now. But at the same time, if I turn off SLI in my control panel it runs worse. So I guess..it's working. It's just not registering with MSI afterburner?

I also figured it had to be working, because others are saying there single 670's can't run full settings. And I'm running everything maxed out and at 1600p and getting great performances. I also haven't had any crashes yet. Not a single one.

Is disabling tesselation a possible temporary fix? Will try that out next.

I'm pretty impressed by this game's FXAA, it's not perfect but it seems to smooth things quite a bit for very little performance trade-off. Max Payne had fantastic FXAA too, not sure if this is that good. Still, I hope they add more AA options.

TressFX looks bad...

I kind of agree. I don't want to, but I basically do. Thing is, it looks fantastic at certain points. But I'm also getting this weird flickering effects during other points, and the hair just goes crazy. When the character is more still, or walking slowly, it really looks great IMO.

But given that it takes a hit on FPS and GPU temps, and that it has the kind of problems that it does, it doesn't seem to be worth it. I'm still going to leave it on though, because I do really love it when it works.

? This is weird. I created a custom resolution in the Nvidia Control Panel and I created a 1920x1080/60hz res and it worked! I started up Tomb Raider and that option worked. I then created a 2560x1440 and it worked also.

Same here. Looks amazing when it works and I'm willing to keep it on just for those moments.

So I have a GTX 690, same cpu and 1920x1200 monitor. Sounds like I should be fine.

On Ultimate at 1080p I was getting dips to 20fps with a 670 and i5 2500k @ 4.5 GHz. Turn off TressFX and DOF and I get a constant 60. DOF is one of those things I can compromise on for a smooth framerate, and I didn't even know about TressFX until a week ago, so I can't possibly miss it. I'll leave it for a novelty on a second bullshot play through at 30fps instead.

Played the game for a bit over an hour and got past the deer part.

So far performance has been good. I'm getting 60fps on a regular basis (with Tress FX on) and when it dips blow that, it's usually in the 50's with very few exceptions. The dip it noticeable but if the entire game runs this well throughout, I'll be a happy camper.

PS: The graphics are fantastic, even with just FXAA.
Thanks for those shots, the game looks really fantastic.
And thanks for your report on the performance. I'm really looking forward to the game and since I badly need a new graphics card (currently I have a Radeon 4870) I think I'll go and get a Radeon 7970.

anyone with a 690 have some feedback for how this runs with/without the hair stuff?

The benchmark average fps is 46fps on ultimate settings at 2560x1600 with tress fx on and 59 with it off. Average while in game seems to be in the mid to high 50's with tress fx on. Also, my CPU is weak as I am rocking an i5-750 at 3.9ghz due to the fact that I'm waiting for Haswell. It doesn't seem like SLI is quite operational with this game just yet.

Your game is stable ? No crashes/freezes ?

I just upgraded from a 5870 to a 7970 and the jump was pretty big. You'll see an even bigger one coming from a 4870.

Turning off Tesselation seemed like a good idea, and it ran without a hitch for about 40 minutes. But I just had another crash (on one of the item inspection screens, if that matters). 680 here, lots of crashes/lock-ups. On newest Nvidia beta drivers, stock clocks. I doubt it's related but I always have Afterburner+AB monitor running, will try disabling it.

Latest drivers as well ? Shit, Nvidia/Nixxes have to do something.

EDIT: I didn't realize it wasn't kosher to post so many shots in a row. I understand why of course. So I'm just going to embed two, and make the rest URLs. My apologies.

These you can see TressFX a little better (wind is blowing in this tunne):

Alright, my last attempt at a screenshot. Back to playing the game!

Has anyone tried using the beta driver for an AMD GPU? Any performance increase over the latest official release?

They haven't released a beta driver that deals with Tomb Raider, specifically, but the latest betas have brought improvements over the last stable release.

I think TressFX looks fantastic. Leagues better than without it and all the other static hair in games. Not much better than Alice's, but better, and if this implementation is easier for devs to include across the board, I'
ll take it.

E: So AMD cards don't take all that much of a hit with TressFX?

it boggles my mind how can be possible this port is so horrible, when you see games like dead space 3, some might say tomb raider looks better, but dead space 3 looks amazing on pc and it runs buttery smooth, i never had any drop on my frame rate on that game, i surely hope so this performance issues can be addressed as quick as possible

Okay - I'm on a GTX 660, and just to report this game is unstable to the point of being unplayable. In particular, the bit outside the cave (as other have mentions) = crash city. Tried without AA. Going to try disabling tessellation now.

Just to pick this back up - I disabled tessellation, and now I'm several hours in without any crashes or glitches. It was unplayable before in open areas. So: disable tessellation.

Regarding performance - I'm getting a solid 60 FPS in game on a single GTX 660. The benchmark at the beginning tells me 27 fps, however in game it's MUCH more smooth. (On highest settings).
