Tomb Raider VGA 'Survivor' Trailer

I dont own a PS3 so I cant comment on Uncharted. But the original Tomb Raider remains one of the favourite games of all time. I also loved the latest ones Anniversary and Underworld.

But Im ok with this new Tomb Raider. I have no doubt there will be tombs to platform through, optional or not. The action sequences look pretty cool, Im hoping that parachuting through the trees part is gameplay and not a cutscene.

This is good stuff.

I know it's old but I just watched again some of this gameplay and my desire to play this game only increase further and further. Loving the night and the sound of rain & effects.

I do share the concern for the fellow GAFfers who are afraid of the QTE's.

First I've seen this.

Impressed. Seeing Lara's little nuances does lend to her being a "vulnerable" character.

gameplay meaning hold the stick left or right in a tight invisible corridor to dodge branches or some shit.

I actually like the trend of letting us "control" those little moments, instead of cutting into an in-game cut-scene. What I don't like is the trend of developers rapidly increasing these moments with artificial control, and probably at the cost of something later on.

ND went a bit far with it on UC3 for example, and even though I enjoyed the game a great deal, I think those moments were more harmful than helpful.

I think this game looks like an incredible achievement. The only thing I'm worried about is whether it's too grim to be entertaining. I get the same feeling when I see the last of us footage.

If you want to compare actual gameplay to what I described then we can go there. I wouldn't advise it but we can do it.

Lol, there's no point. You feel the way you do, I feel the way I do. I'm not sure what your angle is to be honest. Some people like it, some don't. I don't understand why that is a difficult concept for you to grasp. What's evident from your posts, to me at least, is nothing is enjoyable to you unless it's an open world game.

If it's structured and pushes you through a certain path, it's just dog shit to you. I mean this is a subjective matter, you can't say "no you're wrong".

I don't get why you have to come into the threads for this game or some other (Last of Us or COD, etc) and shit up the threads because you don't like the games. Yes we understand, they're not your type of games.

And before you say all I like is the "casual" shit (like that term even makes sense), I'm willing to bet I enjoy the majority of the same games you actually like, if you do like any that is.

Short version: You can't have emotional resonance without dramatically simplifying the inputs.

I don't agree with this, and think they're still taking a cinematic approach while offering the very slimmest of interactivity. I think that may be a place to start with this line of thinking, but it's not a great end goal.

The holy grail here is imparting emotion while giving the player as much freedom as they have in normal gameplay. That means cooperating with the player, and using trickery instead of forcing or constraining the player.

But, not having played the game I obviously can't comment on whether it works here or not. But I've heard this shtick before, and find it lacks creativity when it comes to games.

what else do we see here that you want to show us?
The game director wanking about how they took inspiration from real survivor stories and scenarios, to develop their character, instead of copying movies like everyone else; all on the footage Lara going through an absurd and over the top set piece, involving a parachute.

That's all fine and dandy but you're trying to deflect this back to me. Linear or open world doesn't have anything to do with it. We're talking about brain dead game design, or cinematic I think it's called in the industry. Barely having any actual control over what's happening and the control you do have is near impossible to fail. That's bad game design.

Love this GIF. It represents the game on so many levels:

Damn, CD likes to beat Lara up.

I'm still excited to play the game even if it does turn out to be TOMBcharted: Lara's Abyss. I hope it 's got some extra replay value considering there's no MP right? Too soon to expect Lara's mansion to show up I guess.

I think it looks like a fun experience and that is enough. I don't need every game to have deep, thought provoking gameplay in order to simply sit down and have fun with it. I can play stuff like this and enjoy it for the story or whatever, then pop in something like Demon's Souls and enjoy gameplay that requires more thought and time. I just love to play all kinds of games, be they hardcore or something on the lighter side.

When are they going to show the PC version, the IQ is fairly bad in all the vids I've seen?

Isn't Nixxes doing it? If so you can be assured it will be a top notch port with all the latest bells and whistles. From what I could tell the Hitman port was also top notch (even if the game is as much of a joke as this looks).

That's great to hear, I'm a little more interested now.

but why is she killing so many dudes?

Because they're trying to kill her?

Impossible. You can not be a true gamer if you enjoy this.

IGN is doing their TR livestream with Crystal Dynamics. It's supposed to be about an hour long. After watching about 30 minutes of the team explaining some of the mechanics and watching them play around in one of the hubs, I'm sold on the game. It looks fun to play and the combat seems way better than anything in the previous games.

I'll probably watch the tomb raiding video on Wednesday to see what kind of puzzles CD is designing this time around. Honestly, the game looks great.

You must be mistaken. This is casual QTE bullshit that takes no brains. Play real games like Demon's Souls or South Park or something. It takes a high IQ level to even begin to understand those games.

Tomb Raider SHOULDN'T BE popcorn gaming. It's funny you bring up Demon's Souls, because THAT'S exactly where this franchise should've went in terms of exploration and danger.

BUT NO, THEY JUST WANT TO MAKE ME CRY. I DON'T WANT TO CRY, CRYSTAL DYNAMICS, I JUST WANT TO SHOOT ANIMALS IN THE FACE AND STEAL ARTIFACTS.

Funny enough Far Cry 3 probably has more tomb raider elements than this will have. And as an extra bonus it also has all of the modern video gamey bullshit too!

I still want to see this hub stuff that they are still claiming is in this game somewhere. I want to see it on an official trailer and not some livestream that 5 people are watching.

Glad i wasn't the only one who was reminded of the classic TR games while i was playing Demon's Souls. :)

Add yet another game that Dark Souls is a spiritual successor to. All we need to figure out now is how it's reminiscent of Pitfall...

oh hell.

heh. I just don't understand why people wanted Tomb Raider to be contorted like this. Just make it into a new franchise, instead of eliminating the ONLY game on the market that plays anything like it. I hear praise for the "improved" combat. Raise your hand if you're a Tomb Raider fan and combat was what you looked forward to in these games!

The first developer to make a new hard-as-balls tomb exploration game, where death is at every corner, gets my money and my axe.

"We heard that fans didn't like the combat in the series, so the only logical step was to focus entirely on combat and make that central to the game!"

I wouldn't even have a huge problem if they wanted to focus on combat as long as it was engaging combat. Yet I will guarantee you now halfway up this game's tacked on skill tree will be abilities that will completely break the game. Not to mention I'm sure the AI will be dumb as hell and a generic stealth approach can take everything out in a lot of areas.

lol

Now I am not opposed to improving combat or anything, it IS one of the areas where the games needed some serious work... but it really makes me sad when things like this seem to be the focus of what they are showing about the game. Combat and set pieces. When I hear now Lara auto grabs many (if not all) ledges so she won't fall off? That's like the worst design change ever possible for a Tomb Raider game. Like if I had to list the ways to destroy the franchise, I would probably put that in a top 5 list.

All of you saying this game should play more like the first ones need to replay them, they aged horribly.

why did the developer put so many human enemies that need to be killed in the game is the implied question.

I hate this kinda thinking (that, interestingly, was also directed to some of the Uncharted games). They are there because you need enemies to fight, and that's the direction they went. It's a game, just a game, stop trying to picture as something else.

The worst part is that I'm watching this stream, and they ARE doing some pretty nice stuff with the core game mechanics, but it's just surrounded in Uncharted style scenarios. The final shootout in the demo was 100% Uncharted including ziplines, guys with riot shields, and slight wave based spawning. I don't get it. There's some really nice environmental / weather design, but combat looks very "been there, done that." There no feeling of "nature's out to get you." The survival stuff is just set dressing.

The only problem with old Tomb Raider games is the grid controls. All that has been fixed with the direction they were going in new TR games anyway, even prior to this latest game. Combat was never ever really an issue because you basically only got into combat for 5% of the game.

Old Tomb Raider games have fantastic level design, perfectly balanced puzzles, fantastic tension and real skill-based platforming. And gorgeous, atmospheric music. All you have to do with modern TR is return to Prince-of-Persia-esque trap avoidance, complex multi-level puzzles and dark tombs with who-the-fuck-knows-what popping out around corners (I broke my ankle during Tomb Raider, fucking raptor) and marry that to the controls they nailed pretty much in any of the modern TRs, and you'll be 90% rated game and winner at game development life.

Little story required. Just Lara Croft going to crazy ancient tomb after crazy ancient tomb, unraveling elaborate stone and gear work machinery with cogs and push blocks and fuckin' T-Rex's maybe appearing for good measure.

I agree that improving combat is good, but the problem often arises where the developers focus too much on it and then they want to justify all the time they spent on it by shoving in more scenarios that show off their work and it gets in the way of the other stuff that fans actually care about. An enemy encounter every now and then, especially something like a dinosaur, can be exciting, but with too heavy a focus it just gets monotonous, especially with mundane enemies.
