THE POWER OF NEWTYPES! Gundam takes war so seriously, and it's situation never seem as desperate as the one here. I find myself quicker to believe "you're all we have left!" in Eva than I ever did in Gundam. I think that helps suspend my disbelief long enough to get to the later episodes that explain things.

And Sadamoto's incredibly lanky characters are so tall-ish, I'm not instantly hit with "OMG, he's 3 foot tall!"
