Audio is definitely encoded differently. Before it was probably a more simple stereo setup and now dialogue is probably separated from sound fx and music. If you are using TV speakers that might be why it sounds muffled.

Doesn't sound muffled to me. It's definitely a different sound mix than the old tapes, though. Probably based on the more recent 5.1 mixes.
If anything, I feel like it's a much cleaner mix now.
EDIT: Like just now that guy yelling that the missiles were coming back around was clearly on a separate channel from the other main dialogue, so it sounded different.
