There was nothing not serious about that scene (I assume you are talking about when the life fibers killed the sister). I feel some of you don't know what it actually means for something to be taken seriously or not. Something can be silly or over the top and still "serious"

That happening doesn't make these flashbacks not attempts at narrative and character development/exploration. A show can have silly elements and still want itself to be taken "seriously". Something like TTGL is the same.
