Season 2 is off to a significantly better start than most of season 1. Eren being away from things most of the time certainly helps.

Series with weak MCs usually improve drastically when the focus shifts to other characters.

Honestly, if you want a weak protagonist in a long running Shonen, then look no further than Ichigo, who literally lost all of his personality out side of "Protect mah nakama" after the Soul Society arc.

The thing about Eren is that it seems like he's supposed to be unlikable and stupidly rash, which does add a small bit of interest to me, personally. I feel like there's not a disconnect being author intent and audience reaction.

I'd feel different if he was painted in a positive light by the show but still came across as an idiot to the audience (ie there was an intent disconnect).
