Man, as hack-y Anno has gotten with the plot and heavy handed with the themes, certain scenes of his old brilliance shine through. 2.22 probably has the most of those.

Yeah. The old version had the better buildup overall, but the transition to the brutality was more appealing in this version. You get a brief struggle up close, EVA-01 starts to get the upper hand, then it starts to really turn things around - even goes for a judo toss into a mountanside, Ultra-style.

Then it starts to RIP AND TEAR

Perfection.
