nintendo continues to reinforce the idea that the touch screen was a stroke of genius, but two screens makes no sense. when every nintendo release continues to utilize this revolutionary feature as a secondary map screen that makes the handheld a bulky mess, i shake my head and wonder why it couldn't have been a single, touch screen handheld with better 3D hardware. oh, nintendo, how thy confuses me.

Ok the actual game looks really good and could be fun and inventive. There could be awesome gameplay mechanics involved but WHAT THE FUCK IS THE TOP SCREEN?! It's not even a very zoomed out map so you just see like a little more than what's on the NORMAL screen except in no-detail outlines..... am I failing to see a point here?

its so you can get a wider view around you in every direction so you can be ready ahead of time, since this game seems to be one where you are constantly moving. i think its a nice idea for the top screen. plus, it clears the bottom screen of all the status displays and such.

I just find it so funny that Nintendo's adult-oriented marketing campaign is so at odds with its actual content.

Agreed. I wish Nintendo had simply gone for a single, larger, higher quality screen. Or just gone with what they have and shrink the platform down a bit and chop $50 off the asking price.... though then we'd have probably gotten what was meant to be the GB Nitro instead.

really it needed two touch screens to really split up the action and make for interesting uses, the "map screen" is getting tired already.

Imagine if you had to guide kriby over gaps on the bottom screen while having to paint barriers on the top screen to protect him from falling objects.

Imagine the mario ds "sort or splode" mini game with seperate screens to manage. etc etc.

So EVERY DS game has to use all of the systems features effectively and be some sort of gaming revolution? And all of this has to be discernable from a handful of screen shots? You guys sure have high standards for this system even though you trash it constantly.

show me one game that uses the second screen in a 'revolutionary' or 'innovative' sort of fasion. advance wars ds, in my book, is the only one that counts so far, and arguably, there's no reason why advance wars ds' separate screen couldn't be used on a single screen with an L/R toggle.

i trash because i want something new out of it. it think the DS has great potential - feel the magic is awesome. i just want a 'real' game that makes use of it outside of a plethora of flashy mini-games.

Im ok with the map on the second screen if it highlights powerups and shows you where to go next. I use it all the time in Mario.

This looks like the map will show you exits and entrances.... :)

This clearly shows powerups won't be shown. :(

This is a great dual screen menu!

Yeah I guess you win some and you lose some, still wish Nintendo would put more effort into not making the damn DS look like a gimmick though. More Advance Wars DS, Another Code and Harvest Moon DS games. Less Ridge Racer DS and Castlevania DS gimmicks!

I love the map screen. In games like RE4 and MP2 I'm constantly pausing to check the map to see where I am and where I need to be.
In games like Zelda the map either takes up the screen or requires a button to access it.

With the DS I can view the map at all times. Really handy stuff.

I've only played a little of it, but Metroid:Hunters seems to be a very good use for the second screen. As shown by the original control scheme it would be horrible to try to aim and see the action on one screen. This is in itself not very innovative when looking at the entirety of videogames, but as far as portables go, this potentially/arguably offers the best possible control scheme for first person shooters.

Also this Kirby game looks great. I played my first Kirby game, "The Amazing Mirror", this year and it was great. Hopefully this one is just as fun.

I'm sorry, I just don't see what so confusing about the second screen, it removes the clutter of a HUD in this game and puts the map in view so the action doesn't have to stop for you to see where you are.

Let's make MGS3 an example. Now, it was the intention of the developer for that game not to have the usual radar, yet to takes forfuckingever to pull up the damn map and see where I am and where I need to go. In Kirby, apparently I'll never have to pause the game for that and thats a good thing.

What is revolutionary about the two screens is the freedom in how you can design your game for it. The touch screen can be made to perform serveral functions that the standard D-pad just can't - analog functions, drawing, writing, additional buttons, you name it.

What the blazing hell do you expect on the second screen? Really, I want to know what you're looking for here. Folks seem to be expecting more than what is realistic here.

Maps are almost a given with action or platforming titles. Some games may have multiple uses for it, Mario 64 uses it for maps and sometimes both screens function was a whole. If it was a one-screen handheld with touch the interface would become much more cluttered.

Hell the map screen would have been cool if it were a touch screen, what if there was certain secrets on the map screen like weak wall and you could reach up and destroy them with the stylus altering the terain on the game screen below as well.

A game doesn't have to use all the features, but more opportunity to use interesting ideas wouldn't have hurt anybody.

I think Nintendo used two screens on the DS to facilitate the touch screen game play (which I think is the real revolution, at least in a mainstream sense) . A lot of games require you to use the touch screen as just an input device , so you need a second screen to view the action unobstructed. In the case of this game it seems really fast paced, so you would need a second wide angle screen to plan your moves while making precision moves on the zoomed in touch screen. That doesnÂ’t sound too revolutionary but it sounds fun to me. I just think you guys are being a little too nitpicky.

Once you get good at, it I can see this game getting to the point where you dont even need to look at the bottom screen. you can probably just look at the top screen and draw lines where you know you need to go.

Flip top good.
Having touch screen solely on flip part less good.
Having flip top with only speakers not good.
Toss in cheaper second screen for whatever purpose on flip top good.
Differentiation from GBA/GBMA to enforce claims of third pillar useful.

I AM OFFENDED! I was SO going to let Kirby be my mascot but no! You ruin it! Howwibly!

In other news, this game looks pretty damn sweet, I can't wait to get my hands on it.

Sigh, I guess you're right. Oh and looking at your avatar reminds me that even though I feel ep1-13 weren't up the SEED's standards, today's NEW OPENING ANIMATION DAY! :D

ACK DON'T REMIND ME! I actually listened to the preview up on the SEED Destiny site, I don't really like what I heard, but ah well I should be looking forward to all the new stuff to look at in the new opening. But perhaps the new ending will make up for it.

eh? And who are you? They're better off reading through my insightful posts than your boring drivel. I didn't even know you existed until just now.

Hah, I don't mind at all what you do or what you think. Nor do I plan on making a name of myself if it's uncalled for. Enough people know me around here that I feel well apart the community, and I'm happy simply posting my own remarks on news and debates even if they aren't read, which I highly doubt. I'm curious though, you usually seem to ignore snide comments made towards you, why did you take mine into any consideration?

Both of you.

. Now.

If it's anything like the last Kirby game (amazing mirror... which was awesome)... you're gonna need that map....

the damn map is huge, we're talking metroid/castlevania huge...

If it wasn't for a second screen, our hands would get in the way using mouselook controls in the (hopefully) many upcoming NDS 3rd person shooters :)

Enough of that though, this game looks nice. First Kirby game I'll ever buy.

I love the concept and look of Kirby DS, but the map screen hud is horribly ugly, it looks like it was made with MS Paint.

They need to put a little more effort in their map screens.

I agree, we always talk about graphics problems when it comes to DS games...

It looks perfectly fine to me, it's not a pixar film, it's part of a game, it looks practical and useful, as a map, for the game.

Sounds like adult content to me :).

I wonder what the colour spectrum on the map screen is for. It'd be interesting if this game actually translates colour into a gameplay dynamic somehow; for instance, collecting certain objects in the game changes the colours of the spectrum towards the colour of the item, which gives you movement bonuses/changes or changes the spectrum of your paintbrush, which in turn changes Kirby's speed or jumping distance, etc. Or maybe even affects the colour of the level you're in.

Spectrum here:

is different than here:

OMFG IT DOESN"T USE EVERY NEW ELEMENT OF THE DS INNOVATIVELY ALL AT THE SAME TIME NO NEW BREATHE-IN-THE-MIC-AND-DRAWING-WITH-ALWAYS-BRAND-NEW-DUAL-SCREEN GAMEPLAY

I'm really tired of this. Did Nintendo really make some promise that every feature was going to be used in a brand new way during every second of every game? No. Maybe they said it would "revolutionize" gaming, but come on, that's just marketing. When Sega said "Genesis Does What Nintendon't" it didn't literally mean that Genesis shot poo at your face because the SNES didn't. It was a slogan.

I'm also really tired of this "it only uses the second screen as a map so it sucks" crap.
I'm with foobar--I enjoy not having my "gameplay screen" cluttered with stuff, whether it's maps, or life bars, or point tallies, or whatever. I've liked full-screen modes in games in the past, but sometimes you need just need to be able to see status indicators while you play. DS easily gives you the best of both worlds when it comes to this.

This game looks great.
