Remasters that Everyone wants but publishers won't touch, why?

This thread is dedicated to remasters of games that are long past, that people want, but publishers refuse to touch. Games that are cherished and would guarantee to at least make more than they cost to port (not talking remakes here but remasters, think Suikoden 1 & 2 Collection, Castlevania dominus collection, bioshock collection, etc...)

I want to know what games did you love, but can't play without emulation, but would love to play on modern machines (for me that's the switch or switch2 for portability)
Also what games did you miss that you would like to try with a remaster? Also why do you want it and what makes it special to you?

Thoughts on why these haven't been done yet?

My small list:
1. Mega man legends 1 2, and Tronn Bonne (The first two I loved on ps1, the 2nd I haven't played. I sold all my ps1 games for peanuts in 2001, a collection of just about every black label jrpg )
2. Skies of Arcadia - Never played this but heard it was great. Didn't have the hardware
3. Road Rash Genesis games and 3d/jailbreak. - EA is holding on to a treasure trove, assholes!
4. Parasite Eve 1 and 2 , the 3rd Birthday(psp game) - yeah these are being shit on by Square, ridiculous.
5. Vagrant Story - Another Squaresoft masterpiece lost to time.
6. Vandal Hearts 1 and 2 - Konami Srpgs that will never see the light of day.
7. Wii classics collection - Little Kings Story, Muramasa the Demon Blade (I got both versions on my vita and wife's wii but that isn't ideal, I love both).
8. No One lives forever 1 and 2 - why is this lost to time?
9. Freelancer - Microsoft owns this, what gives?
10. Early 2000s 3dfx horror collection - Alice , Alice Madness returns , Undying - more ea games left to die

Squaresoft has a tone of games in their ps1 library that they just sit on. Gathering dust. Why? Parasite eve, Vagrant Story, Brave Fencer Musashi, Bushido Blade. It seems if its not Final Fantasy, Mana, or Dragon Quest, they dgaf.

EA - EA has to be holding and hoarding the biggest collection of classics to date and its not even close. These f'ers have so many games that I would love modern versions for or console ports. Other publishers make a few extra for collections and remasters, hell we got Gothic 1 and 2 on the switch, but we can't get Road Rash or Alice? Black and white? I don't get it.

Konami- Rerelease silent hill games there are so many stuck, vandal hearts, etc..
Capcom - they release GBA games that most never played (there is what 5 mega man battle network games but they refuse to touch Legends? Why? These games already had a psp re-master, but even then they refused to port it to the USA and it stayed in Japan. Why?

Sega - Skies of Arcadia, Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi - why hold back? (Also speaking of Crazy Taxi, what happened to Simpsons hit and run and road rage. I own both for ps2 but come on , easy money! )

Luckily for PC games, most work going back decades to the 1980s and if not fixes come out. I can still play Thief the dark project and even on the steam deck. Console games not so much, but there are some games on pc that aren't that easy. Games that were delisted or never were digital (nolf and nolf2 come to mind).
I came into this thread knowing exactly what I was going to say, and then you listed it at the #1 spot lmao

If they ever announce remasters of these, it would be like Christmas morning to me:

Isnt it because some of the very old games listed in this thread are stuck in a legal hell of who owns bits and pieces of an IP from potential dead publshers and studios and other difficulties like Xenogears/Xenosaga would have to be a collaboration between Square, Bandai and Nintendo.

Burnout 3+Revenge.

I know, its arcade racing and they aren't massive sellers.

But come on Andrew Wison, EA CEO and all round good guy (if a little bit like a synth from Blade Runner): What if I pay you $100 for it and take you out for a nice dinner as well?
The PS2 or Xbox 360 version? :pie_thinking:

I will still say Everything or Nothing was an absolutely fantastic game and IMO far better than goldeneye (game) in terms of story and levels.

That being said Nightfire is still my Goat bond game for MP. So many hours playing splitscreen and wrecking friends and my brother on that Gondola and Japan map.
Let's hope we see some of these again.

lol, I'm probably the only one that wants it but TRON 2.0.
C'mon Nightdive, this is a no brainer with ARES right around the corner. I think it even uses the same engine as NoLF.
You're not the only one luckily it's on steam so I have it on steam deck but I would Not mind a modern console port Of it

If this thread was about remasters/remakes nobody wants but I do, I would choose:

Heavenly Sword
Folklore
LAIR
Motorstorm

Well, practically many early PS3 games that were amazing, and would be even better remastered or remade.

PS3 gen has so many games that deserve a second chance!!

they probably won't fit into the "what everyone wants" but these are what I want.

Chrono Trigger
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Bloodborne
Lufia 1&2
3D Dot Game Heroes
Lost Odyssey
Diddy Kong Racing
Final Fantasy IX (a remake would be even better)

Xenosaga has nothing to do with Square or Nintendo. That should be pretty doable.

Xenogears, I believe, is solely in Square's ballpark, but this game at least does pose some potential issues.

There should be some studios hired on to do nothing but remasters. The problem with this is they eventually get burned out and want to do something new. Maybe consoles need a system with mods or a fan project system where fans can make full game projects of existing ip's and removing that burden from the publisher.

I'd wanna see Doom 3 with path tracing. Shadows were such a huge selling point for that game and the game's source code was released a long time ago. I'm surprised this hasn't happened yet.

Demon's Crest also deserves a remake/remaster similar to that Ghosts n Goblins game that came out a few years back.

I'd be careful with "Everyone", many of the games listed are 20+ years old and they might not have sold as well you may think or be universally praised.
If I got a choice I'd love to see a basic remaster of Simpsons Hit & Run. Don't need to do much with it, put Nightdive on it.
Sometimes market conditions, lack of digital distribution/later recognition, etc. may have hurt those games (see: System Shock 2).

I wonder how much of the motion capture data is still usable. That would significantly increase the cost.
They have the story, the voice acting, the levels and as you said the motion data, even if you keep it for a straight remaster with no additions you have pretty much all the data to remake the game not to mention all the texture and model assets from UC4/Lost Legacy to swap in.. why in the fuck Sony have not made this priority uno is mindboggling to me, this is an easy 10mil+ seller, everyone loves Uncharted and everyone loves that old skool Drake & sully banter and hardly anyone has played this game therefore it'll be an absolutely fresh adventure for the majority of us

Parasite Eve. Made in the same vein as FF7 Remake.

Probably too costly to remake on that scale though.

Also...

Would love this with higher quality source assets if they still have them archived.
Wonderful game.

Takes a while to shake the feeling you're playing as Chris Redfield cosplaying Batman, but it's a fantastic game. Improved on City in every way, and makes for a wonderful Christmas game.

Origins and Asylum are tied for my favourites of the series.

I dont know, a lot of those are already on PC and you can get them running with community mods that will have more effort put in than the devs themselves. From 4k patches, to widescreen fixes, texture packs, and other QOL features. I stopped waiting for EA to remaster NFS MW after I saw all the mods which are just insane overhauls of MW, Carbon and the Underground series. Not only is it a graphical overhaul but they also add new cars, change up the campaign etc. They look insanely good. You just have to put a little effort to put it all together and most of the time its just drag n drop files from one folder to another. But if you are console only, then yeah, shit out of luck. Even Burnout 3+4 have HD packs for your PS2 emulators.

Might be lost source code for some, could also just be harder to avoid breaking the shit out of older games with little to no surviving documentation when making modifications.
Think adding ligma jokes and reducing female exposure are requirements by the global SUGMA commitee so if you have problems with that you're better off not bothering.

Why? S-E has rereleased / remastered old FF games without Sakaguchi for years now. I can't imagine that they'd be ok with doing that with their flagship franchise but won't touch Xenogears because Takahashi is at Monolith.
Sakaguchi already was more and more hands off during the development of the later PS1 and early PS2 Final Fantasies, so it's not like there wasn't any precedent. For Xenogears, it's pretty much an "auteur" project of Takahashi and his wife. I mean, Square also bothered to get Yasumi Matsuno for remasters of his games (Tactics Ogre Reborn and now FF Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles) on board. They also bothered to get a few of the OGs when they did the Mana Collection for Switch.

Your personal taste or opinion isn't the same one of "everyone".

Most of the games you mentioned didn't sell a shit for the standards of when they were released, which were smaller than current day standards.

They were games that performed poorly back then, so would perform even worse today being in most cases because most people would see them as outdated.

And game companies are companies, not charity. Meaning, they invest in projects where they think there's potential for profit. Not in projects they are pretty sure that will be pretty unprofitable.

And even if in some case they may think that a remaster would be profitable, if they don't do it is because they think their resources are better invested in other projects with a bigger profit potential.

There are a few other you didn't mention as would be Uncharted or Bloodborne, which are successful projects that would be profitable to remaster or remake. In this case, the reason they didn't get a PS5+PC remaster may be because they are either getting a remake instead, or are waiting to release it strategically next to a sequel, movie or tv show adaptation, or for the next gen in order to have a bigger difference versus the original one.

In this case as I remember it was mentioned somewhere that the issue was with the Cadillacs brand (GM) blocking the license usage.

That's quite often a reason behind it, but not always

EA's LotR games are a very good example of those bizarre legal rights. EA has (or had) publishing rights, and owns assets + source code, games are using visual designs and clips from Peter Jackson's movies owned by New Line Cinema (which is owned by Warner Bros), and all video game rights for games based on LotR IP are owned by Middle-Earth Studios, which is also owned by Embracer. A potential re-release of Two Towers, Return of the King, Battle for Middle-Earth or Third Age means so many parties would have been involved that hypothetical revenue split would be very low, meaning publishers would just opt to not do anything with it thinking it's not worth the effort

Backwards compatibility is generally a great thing but probably already not profitable, but remastering, a per game effort, for probably almost no sales is another level of passion project.
Usually I am not even interested in a proper remake when I already have played the old version.
Nevertheless remakes I think could be interesting: NOLF, Blast Corps, Mission Impossible (N64), Thief/Dark Project, Desert/Urban/Jungle Strike, Comanche

I also wonder with the advancing AI stuff, if sprite based games could not be built with all new graphics, still running the entire old code, but displaying AI generated graphics as an 4k overlay, maybe even with different artstyle options to chose from.

Please stop asking for a Bloodborne Remaster.
All you'll get is a patch for TLOU2 that plays cutscenes in random order or something like that.

Jak & Daxter.

All the other big PS1/2 platformers have had their remake, but Naughty Dog have just allowed it to die despite reiterating over and over again how much they love and value it.

Tbh I'm surprised Xenosaga is still stuck on the PS2 with no remaster of any kind, considering how popular the Xeno games are. MGS4 and Yakuza Dead Souls on PS3 for the same reason, they're both from critically acclaimed series, but are stuck on an older gen console.

You'll basically need an emulator for all of those if you want to play them.
How would the rights work for Xenosaga?

No one Lives forever is in Licence Limbo. It's License has spread to various different companies, and no one is willing to give their part away or bothers to do anything about it to do anything meaningfull with the franchise.
I've seen a video about it a long time ago.

As for my choice.
Vampire The Mascuerade: Bloodlines.
I have no faith in the upcoming sequel. It will be a Woke salvaged mess, with no RPG gameplay, and it's called Bloodlines 2 in name only. It's better to remaster/remake/rebalance the original at this point and get some of the 90s raunchy story goodness that we have certainly missed these years.
Here's another video by the same Tuber.

I don't think Naughty Dog of today would ever touch a cartoony game like Crash Bandicoot or Jak & Daxter ever again. It needs to be gritty, realistic & cinematic now.
Ultimately it's a Sony problem, the realistic stuff sell better and it's an image thing, "we don't make game for kids!". Why else would Sly Cooper or Ape Escape be allowed to languish.

They allowed Insomniac to keep at it with Ratchet & Clank, but that's only because they were actually passionate about the R&C universe. Now they suffer in the Marvel mines because it's more profitable.

Bloodborne. Though Im pretty sure I know why Sony is sitting on it, first is that they want Miyazaki its his opus and they respect that. Secondly, much like how PS5 released with a truly welcome and unexpected remake with Demons Souls, I think Bloodborne likewise will be a remake for the PS6 launch giving them guaranteed hype for a much demanded game.

Syphon Filter series, Another weird one that never gets touched, could have easily been rebooted or remade into Sonys own Splinter Cell or something. Hell even a remaster like Snake Eater just got would be great.
