Remasters that Everyone wants but publishers won't touch, why?

Because of emulation and the collector scene for used games. Not that everyone who wants to play an old game can be served by those two solutions, but most can.

You mentioned some classic PS1 games from Square. If you haven't looked into it, there are people out there making AI upscaled texture packs and these games are trivial to find online. With an AI scaled texture pack, the result is a running version of the game that probably looks as good or better than what a modern company would be willing to put out. Here's an example:

The upcoming FINAL FANTASY TACTICS - The Ivalice Chronicles is going to retail for $49.99. That title might have enough clout to get enough people to buy it at that price that they can justify it as a "fan service" project. But I doubt many people would be willing to pay $50 for Vagrant Story when they can get it for free with the texture pack via emulation if they really want to play it.

As far as the collector scene, there's a certain excitement in deal hunting for a game you want, getting the physical copy in your hands, running it on the original hardware, etc. People don't get that with buying a remastered version that runs on new hardware.

for some games emulation would be a direct competition, but for others it wouldn't.

there's many games out there that could benefit from adjustments to the gameplay and design that aren't related to graphics and performance alone.

for example, a proper enhanced remaster or remake of Mario Sunshine could fix the games obvious issues.
the camera is a big issue for example, as is the feel of the Fludd abilities, especially the jetpack.
so making a Sunshine remaster, running at 60fps (maybe 120fps even), improved graphics, improved level design, improved fludd controls etc. would beat any emulated version.

or Mega Man Legends. a remaster of that could add the dual analog controls of the second game to the first game. it could also improve some of the controls in general, as both 1 and 2 do have some oddities that feel jarring at times.

a remaster/remake of Mega Man Legends 1 could make the town a bit more lively and less empty looking as well.

Don't care for remasters anymore and just want remakes but I guess I'll be fine with these remasters below.

Timesplitters 3 remaster
Run Like Hell remaster
Deep Fear remaster
Quake 4 remaster
Extermination remaster
Carrier remaster

Skies of Arcadia was great but probably not popular enough to warrant a remake.

There's Road Redemption which is a lot like Road Rash. I think the charm of those games probably gets lost in the modernising though. Now if you were to mix it with Burnout Paradise, that'd be cool.

Deus Ex always seems like an obvious contender to me. Many correctly consider it the greatest game of all time.

This should be an absolute no-brainer in my book, remade using the very latest ND engine and expanded somewhat as I believe the story clocks out at a respectable 10hrs but I'd say 15-20hrs would be perfect, let's face it how many people have actually played this..

well according to wiki approx half a million which is nothing considering UC4 sold 18million so a remake would make absolute bank, I've never played it and I'm a huge fan of this series so it would be day1 for me and who doesn't want some old skool Drake and Sully adventures, ain't nobody wants to play Drakes bloody daughter or another girl boss outing, we want another Drake.
Golden Abyss was a great game. I don't know how they would translate the touch screen parts. Would work on the switch (but its Sony first party, but who knows nowadays)

That was such a fun game. So was Killzone Mercenary, Soul Sacrifice Delta, Gravity Crash ultra, and Ragonork Odyessy Ace. Games that not many people played because they are stuck on vita. I think all the hand helds have this issue.

I actually had my oled vita out the other day. Wanted to play world invitational to compare to the new Hot shots. New hot shots added a bunch, but controls on old game were way tighter. I didn't realize how small that screen is though, at the time it seemed big compared to the psp or ds.

Road Redemition is fun, i have it on both ps4/5 and Switch. It just gets tough as nails after a while (well so did road rash). I loved how Road Rash 3d had licensed songs. That game was killer.
Hell there was no licesend songs on the genesis road rash 1-3. I don't see why these weren't on the genesis collections or nso emulators. .. yes I do, EA...grrr.
All they need to do is make a road rash collection and sell it for $30-40 have everything from road rash 1 to jailbrake.

Dues Ex would be nice, but it's playable easily on pc and sold in both steam and gog.

Vagrant Story would be another cool one, because the art style (especially concept art) is good, but it's obviously limited by the PS1. The combat system is fairly unique, with it and Fallout back then being the only ones I could think of centered around attacking particular body parts. I'd also just prefer them continuing the series in some way that isn't just a remaster.

Parasite Eve and No One Lives Forever I thought were rights issues, and we would've gotten more of them or remasters by now if not because of that. No One Lives Forever is at least abandonware that you can get pretty easily now.

Condemned Criminal Origins and Mercenaries bc they HATE MY GUTS
I got the oG mercenaries on series x, thinking it was like just cause 2. Man that game is janky. It is very early open world and you can tell. Was fun for what I played. Wish they would have Mercenaries 2 on there. I remember having fun with that on ps3 back in the day. That fuel, and just cause 2.

I wonder how much of the motion capture data is still usable. That would significantly increase the cost.

What rights issues. I don't recall songs in them? Weren't they original ips? Nolf is a spoof off of James bond isn't it?

This thread is great because I was about to make one just like it, basically because I'm a bit desperate for 2 remasters – not remakes – of a couple of titles or franchises. I don't need them to add anything other than adapting the game – graphically – for the new consoles and making it available to more players through the current generation. I don't need changes in music, mechanics… no no no, just bring those games to the current generation without a huge remake budget, screw that… just bring the same gem to the current generation without major changes. I'm talking about:
Splinter Cell; Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Splinter Cell Double Agent V1, Splinter Cell Double Agent V2.
To hell with Ubi and the remake of the first Splinter Cell, I don't expect anything too spectacular from that. Just bring the classics, I see no reason not to. What a shitty company. They've had an iconic franchise on hold for more than 12 years without knowing what to do, with a remake going nowhere and a community manager trolling the fans. (remember when the Splinter Cell account dropped a hint at Gamescom or some other convention and then never mentioned or announced anything afterwards

The other one: a remaster of Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Please don't bring Fallout 4's aesthetics into Fallout 3, I'm begging you.
And lastly, Chrono Trigger. I don't care about anything else.
wait there is a remake of splinter cell 1 in the works? Is that why the first two games were delisted from the Xbox store and steam?
I got the series x as a gift in 2023. I remember they made a big stink about backwards compatibility. I finally get it and so many games were "delisted" , and they made a statement about "that's it that is all we will do"... like what. Bunch of asshats. As soon as they get gamepass and there activsion/bethesda deals, screw backwards compatibility. I blame MS as those games are still on steam.

This game was my shit back in the day. The concept, the art style, the gorgeous soundtrack. If done right, this could be a real winner I think. At least a reboot of the franchise based on this first game's whole vibe would be exciting.

Sekiro had some great Tenchu DNA in it though so it did scratch at least a bit of that itch.

Essentially a PC port of Lost Odyssey that's then ported to Xbox Series X, PS5, and Switch 2 at ultra settings, 4k, and 60fps.

I also would love a console remaster of The Evil Within at ultra settings, 4k, 60fps for Xbox Series X, PS5, and Switch 2.

I'll name a few:

Chrono trigger
Blue dragon
Vandal hearts (as mentioned)
EA 007 games. (Though there may be hope for these).
NBA jam
Wave race
1080 snowboarding
Cool boarders
Jak and Daxter
Maximo
Ridge racer 4 or psp
NFL blitz or Madden arcade
Colony wars
Project Gotham racing
Full house poker
Twisted Metal
Metal gear solid twin snakes
HD remake of SFIII third strike

Most of my favorite games from the past have already been remastered, so my wishlist is pretty small and consists mostly of games from last gen. Also, games older than the PS3/360 Gen should be remaked, not remastered IMO.

1. Alien Isolation - higher res and 60fps would be enough. I hope this becomes relevant when the sequel is officially announced!

2. Dead Space 2 + 3 - the sequels don't need a remake like the first. They still hold up quite well technically.

3. Batman Arkham Series - res- and fps-bump only.

4. Silent Hill Series - Now that Konami has risen like a phoenix from the ashes, they should make these games accessible on current systems. And I mean ALL games, including Homecoming and Downfall (I like them both very much)!

Yeah I definitely have rose tinted glasses. But for what it was it blew my mind. Just cause was never the same. It amazes me no one has come close to that level of destructive mayhem since.

Tbh I'm surprised Xenosaga is still stuck on the PS2 with no remaster of any kind, considering how popular the Xeno games are. MGS4 and Yakuza Dead Souls on PS3 for the same reason, they're both from critically acclaimed series, but are stuck on an older gen console.

You'll basically need an emulator for all of those if you want to play them.
Great call. Id love to replay Xenogears. Its been ages and I was 13 or 14 when it came out. I think a lot of the story beats went over my head cause I remember it being kinda a dense story.

Plus ive never tried any of the other xeno franchises beside the 1st gears and the 1st chronicles, which also is great but doesn't need a remaster

No remasters just remakes pls. Alot of these games can be emulated on pc/conoles with much better results. Replaying these game in a capcom resident evil style remake would be heaven.

Golden Sun
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
Skies of Arcadia
Condemned
Bloodborne
Def Jam Fight for NY
Budokai Tenkachi 3
MK Shaolin Monks
The Warriors
Otogi 1 + 2
Phantasy Star Online

I'd be careful with "Everyone", many of the games listed are 20+ years old and they might not have sold as well you may think or be universally praised.
If I got a choice I'd love to see a basic remaster of Simpsons Hit & Run. Don't need to do much with it, put Nightdive on it.

Some I'd like to see.

Dragon Age: Origins - The best game in the series. I'd be happy with a basic "lick of paint" remaster.

Alien Trilogy - Nightdive need to get onto this, and also remake........

Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight - best game in the series with some incredible level design. I'd love to see a quality of life remake of this gem.

Medieval 2: Total War - My favourite in the series. They gave Rome the remaster treatment. Now it's Med2's turn.

No, not every game needs remake and not everyone has access to emulation.

Apparently the IP rights for No One Lives Forever are in a bit of limbo, since multiple acquisitions and bad record-keeping back then make it hard to know who really even owns it. Nightdive said they're trying to regain the rights to do a remaster (I'll buy day one), but who knows how long that will take.

Parasite Eve wasn't an original IP, it was based on novels by Hideaki Sena, and I believe the rights went back to Hideaki (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Square I think has rights to the characters they created like Aya Brea as the protagonist to just make a new game loosely based on it, but I don't think it's worth it for them to make a remaster, remake or new game without the series name, and even with the name it was a niche property.

Hopefully with AI tools making it easier to upscale assets, some of these older properties will end up coming back just because the cost to do a decent remaster would be affordable enough vs the risk.

The Guided fate paradox
Haunting ground
Clock tower 3
Rule of rose
The awakening fate ultimatum
Xenosaga
El Dorado gate Capcom
Command and Conquer Red alert series and Tiberian Sun
Nightmare creatures

You could argue there are many, many earlier 3D games (PS1, PS2 times) that many people would love to see back. Unfortunately this is a business and would it be worth the hassle in terms of money. Majority of them, sad to say, no. Fortunately we can still play them on original hardware and if you want enhanced resolutions and such, we have emulators which have come a long way since I last used them many years ago. So we can still play the forgotten classics.

Yup,
That's exactly what happened to me. In fact, all the Splinter Cell games were available on Xbox until just over a year and a half ago. I managed to buy Pandora Tomorrow physically, but I couldn't get the rest. Microsoft ended their program of upgrades for past-gen games. Xbox users got free improvements for a large portion of their games – and honestly, some of those upgrades were way better than their PC counterparts (like all the Splinter Cells, Fallouts, Final Fantasy, and Red Dead). Meanwhile, PlayStation users (like me) had to sit and watch Xbox players basically get free remasters for some titles.

Microsoft killed the program maybe because it didn't translate into more Xbox sales and it just meant extra dev time. Ubisoft, on the other hand, is a completely lost company with no direction, drowning in some absurd woke agenda. Most of their staff left, and now the devs who remain are basically just starting out working on huge franchises… there's nothing good to expect from that remake that's been rumored for years, because they've basically killed the Tom Clancy franchise

Yes! Plus all the Prince of Persia games.

Parasite Eve 1 and 2 , the 3rd Birthday(psp game) - yeah these are being shit on by Square, ridiculous.
No-one in their right mind wants a remaster of 3rd Birthday. As for Parasite Eve, its co-ownership by Hideaki Sena and Square-Enix make it a difficult prospect. They supposedly have some creative differences regarding this IP that will probably see it left in the too hard basket.

Not a publisher, but I wish someone could get it across Nobuo Sakaguchi that no one gives a shit about his mobile Terra battle games, and that a lot of people want a lost odyssey remaster
