Toyota is killing the Scion brand

I wanted an xB so bad when it was still the same car as the Japanese BB, but then they decided to Americanize it and it looked so stupid.

Ended up getting a Nissan Cube instead and never looked back.

Eh, its still an 86 successor, its just missing the proper badges, but even then it still has this badge on the side..

As for a turbo, dont hold your breath either way. Sales of the 86 havent been what Toyota was hoping for. Any updating of the 86 since 2012 have been minimal at best.

Which is extremely unfortunate. I had a 2012 Orange model that I bought when they first released. It was a great car, but unfortunately family life kicked in and I had to get rid of it. I wouldn't mind eventually picking another one up once my kid gets older though.

I wonder if it will be a Toyota FR-S, or a Toyota GT86?

The C-HR looks really cool. I'm glad it won't be a shitty Scion.

This always confused me. Everyone said the same thing about the FR-S. "I like it but I wish it wasn't a Scion."

But Scion only has 4 or 5 cars on sale total! How many car brands can you say that you like 20% or more of the lineup? (I mean aside from like Porsche or Ferrari)

As long as the good cars continue to live. Which means the xA should die. The iM looked ok.

Came very close to buying a first-gen xB recently. The hype is real. The condition of the car was rough, however, and it put me off buying the car.

So I assume you hate Lexus, Infinity, and Acura as well?

I'd be interested to see what would happen with sales if that happened, but I guess it would be weird if Honda, Toyota, and Nissan suddenly had 2-3x as many of a particular class of vehicles, not to mention how large the lots would have to be or have duplicate models be cut.

It does make me smile every time I see a NSX go by locally and it has Honda badges.

The iM looked great, but suprisingly from all the reviews, the iA was by far the better car.

Mazda is at the top of their game, recently. Can't wait for that new RX.

The nice thing about TC's were that they were made and assembled 100% in Japan. Pretty rare in this day and age. They also came with more tech options at a lower price tag.

They fucked up the branding ever since the Scion offshoot began though. They also started releasing some piss poor release series editions and dropped a lot of the TRD parts.

I had a 07 tc and enjoyed it, but the lack of limited slip differential made driving it in the wet and cold a pain. But that was the last year they looked good, Scion progressively made the car uglier with each passing year.

Goodbye Scion.

I have never taken the time to see what this badge says. I always see it on the side of FR-S and wondered what it was.

That's what aftermaket support is for.

yeah but youre forgetting that the same engine in the WRX has a turbo from the factory. not the FRS. and seriously going the turbo route in one of those is risky and cost way too much. i mean if youre thrifty and know how to work on cars, you can slide a V8 right on into the chassis and get away with so much more. (depending on where you live and inspections blahblahblah...)

Good riddance. I hate when car manufacturers create a new brand just for the sake of it. Scion never needed to exist.

But it's so hip and edgy, the college kids will love it. Look how cool Toyota can be!

I never understood why Scion needed to exist either. Just improve your current fleet like Hyundai did, no need to spin off a new brand.

So Toyota got rid of the Celica and now the tC!?

Come on guys.

I guess the FR-S is their replacement. Also, bring back the Supra.

Yea they kept trying to make the car look "edgy". It's like they hired some car designer who just graduated 10th grade.

As someone who works for toyota, this is not news to me, however I am sad to see the tC go. I have the 2015 release series and I fucking love that car.

I think the lineup was an interesting idea but they didn't execute properly.

They were early to the subcompact market (in the US) which now has tons of contenders from everybody but they squandered their lead and allowed other companies like Ford with the Fiesta and Honda with the Fit surpass them.

The TC could have been the "it" with the young import crowd but it always felt a little too bland, soft, heavy, underpowered, etc.

They needed some enthusiasts making decisions for Scion.

Wow, shocked as I remember when their commercials were all over G4 at the time. I never owned one, but their commercials were entertaining. I think that was around 2006 and 2007.

Sad, since I "grew up" with Scion, but I always thought they didn't really need to exist.. the xB back in the day could have just as easily been sold through Toyota as the bb as it is in Japan... but then again Toyota had ZERO cool points back then so they needed to do something to make owning a 'Yota cool. They're not much better now but they have improved relations with young owners, I believe. At least we can get the GT86 for real, if they don't kill that off as well. I know 5 people with Subiyotas, and 3 of the 4 of them with the Scion version swapped the Scion badges for Toyota badges lol.

The problem is, it wont look anything close to that concept.

This was the concept for the FR-S..

Only problem is that besides the ducktail and faux diffuser, it looks very much like the production vehicle.

The previous concepts, the FT-86, was a bit further off the production mark, but shows the evolution it went through to get to the above point and eventually production.

Wow, crazy. No more ugly Scion branding all over the GT86.

Edit: I somehow missed that they were ending production on the TC too. I guess it was kind of redundant with the FR-S around?

Ehhh maybe Im a stickler for details....I see the DNA in the overall design but the production car is vastly different (much smaller too, Ive seen that concept up close in person a few times). Not saying that the FR-S is ugly or anything (I really like the look of it) its just the transition from concept to production can be a bit sobering...

I don't like the Tc. It's too heavy, too underpowered, front wheel drive. Seriously, a coupe with an econobox engine that weights over 3000lb? What were you thinking, Toyota?

Even stranger, the Scion concept was shown a few months after the FT-86II concept, which was as close to the final product as the concepts got. The strange thing is that the two weren't just badge-swaps.

I own a Scion, and my parents have owned two (they just bought an iM a few weeks ago). I'll be sad to see it go (the no-haggle thing was really nice), but at least the cars themselves will live on.

I love my boxy second-gen XB. I liked the more Japanese cube shape of the first edition, but came to love the 2nd one (although not as much). For the price point, it had a lot of great features, handles well, and is extremely roomy inside. Was hoping a 3rd redesign would being it closer to the Japanese Bb, but I guess not. Maybe a Kia Soul will be next for me...

To most customers, too. I saw some sales figures, the BRZ is kind of a dog compared to the WRX/STI.
It's hard to be excited for the BRZ when the 2015 WRX I purchased ended up being a bit cheaper than the BRZ. It just didn't make sense to get a BRZ and all the practical downsides that go along with it living in NYC. I respect the car immensely however.

man that thing is sexy as all hell... but no JZ... and its probably gonna have like a 80k price tag or something dumb like that.

It's pretty likely that Toyota will iterate on (or outright use) a variant of M's S55 engine; so it could easily very much be a pretty worthy successor to the 2JZ. It's not gonna be cheap though, of course, but neither was the mkIV (costed significantly more than a Corvette at the time iirc).

Seriously, check the Nissan Cube out if you like the boxy Japanese-style car thing. I love mine to death. I've never seen a car that was that compact but so room inside.
The Cube is garbage too.
The Soul is the only boxy car with decent enough materials and a decent engine to go with.
