Traveling to Quebec/Montreal: Advice Requested

Status
Not open for further replies.
My family's plan to travel to SE Asia fell through, so we are now looking at Montreal. The dates are roughly 12/26/04-1/2/05. About 6 days are available, after time traveling has been taken into account. My grandmother will probably come and be able to translate if necessary.

Alright, do you think that we will be able to fit in Quebec City on the itinerary? Can you guys tell me what are like the must-sees. What to eat. Good locations to stay.

So what does the insider or veteran traveler say?

Quebec City is about 3 hours away from Montreal, it's mainly for tourists, lots of historical merit, but Montreal's the place to be if you want to party and such.

And don't worry about knowing how to speak French, you don't have to for the most part.

From what I hear

Montreal is abosutely insane on New Years

In a good way or bad way? So Montreal instead of Quebec City for New Years?

Mattx5: I will be with my parents the whole time so.... partying is not exactly on the list. :/

Montreal is awesome for partying, no matter what type of crow you usually hang around with. Eating great is never a problem either: You have countless renoun restaurants, and then you have everything else. No problems there. And if you only speak english, you can easily get by here. Its one of the most open and accepting places in NA. The cultural scene is amazing too, and there is no where quite like it in the summer. You have litteraly the largest amount of international festivals in a city, anywhere (check out the international Jazz, fireworks, and Just for laughs festivals, and the F1 race, to name a few). Old Montreal is said by many tourists to be the nicest part of the city, especially at night (it has a very European touch). Awesome (and pricey) restaurants there.

Quebec city is more of a touristic place, and the clubbing scene is less evolved than Montreal's. You'll also run into some difficulties if you don't speak English.

I would say choose Montreal, for quality of life.

And yes, New Years IS insane here.

Edit: I just read all of your post. I tought you wanted to move here. In that case, Montreal is more of a summer place for tourists. You can still party your ass off and eat incredibly well, but you'll miss out on all of the summer activities (see above).

Try Saint-Laurent street on Fridays and Saturdays for partying and good eating (Buena Note and Globe are very nice), and go to the old port for more great food.

You can see all there is to see in Qc city in one day imo, so you should try to go. Its only 3 hours away.

Montreal is one of those cities like New York, Chicago, Vancouver, etc. that are known for their awesome restaurants.

Montreal rocks, you'll have tons of fun here, don't worry. Awesome awesome nightlife, great restaurants, you'll be able to find a good place to eat all the time!

Oh yeah. I live in Socal so I'm used to temps going as low as 4 degrees C. Would buying some kind of coat help things out? Or maybe thermal underwear?

Thermal undies are always a plus. Make sure you bring lots of alcohol, cold doesn't feel as bad when you drink alot!

:lol

OK this must be some in-joke. I mean, wearing thermal underwear is normal for skiing. So it shouldn't be out of place in Canada.

You'll need more than thermal underwear, you'll need a winter coat.

Picture lots of snow, wind, some ice and a temperature of -30 celcius during the winter.

People don't ski on the streets. If you don't want to sweat through your pants upon entering a building, maybe you should consider a winter jacket instead.

Wait, you're suggesting he's gonna need thermal underwear?! Maybe I've just gotten used to the cold after living here for so long....
Depends on what he's gonna be doing. If he's visiting Quebec and doing a lot of outside walking etc... then I'd personally like to have that option.

Don't underestimate the cold. January is the coldest month of the year here. Add to that you're in a big city, most likely at night and with extra winds because of the sky scrappers. And though you might drive around by car, it gets harder to move downtown on wheels and to play tourist, you will walk and look around at the buildings. You will feel what it's like to have temperatures hovering around and below 0 F.

And most importantly, you're not used to the cold. We the locals have months to get acclimatized to the slowing dropping temperatures and to gain some fat in the process.

Get a nice winter coat, with a sweater underneath. Protect your neck and head too. Then you should be ok.

Quebec City blows, there isnt that much of tourist stuff to visit, unless a big old army fortress really interests you

Forget about the clubs, the women in Montreal is gorgeous. Just walk through downtown and you're amazed.
(maybe it's just me but every stranger i encounter here tells me that my city is having the best women)

Historical sites tickle me the most. Although a bunch of cliffs might not be interesting for longer than an hour. :D
