True Detective S1 is a masterpiece still.

Hmm, she did Tigers Are Not Afraid, which looks pretty good:

Did you ever get around to watching this? What did you think? I watched it recently. Man what a depressing movie. My wife is from a poor south american country and she said this movie isnt too far from reality sometimes. I enjoyed it though.

There's nothing attractive about fake tits…

That's all I remember about it but I only watched a few episodes
I'm sorry....I know this comment is months old.... You can't possibly think those are fake boobs? Besides Sydney Sweeney they are the most famous HBO boobs on TV.

Oh yea I'll explain all the bullshit episodes when they come. Slaves and Masters (James's episode) will be fun lol.

It's perfect. Only Sopranos is above it in terms of TV shows and only because there's far more episodes in the latter. I also love Six Feet Under. Those three are untouchable imo.

I know S3 is meant to be good, how is S4? I was afraid to watch any other season lol.

So I also recently rewatched S1 and it was eye-opening again in terms of how formulaic and generic it makes so many other shows feel. Everything feels like some Old Testament biblical wrath is coming down any day now. Southern Gothic is some of the coolest shit on earth to me and S1 is all the coolest shit of that in one stew.

That shot of Reggie Ledoux (sp?) with the gas mask is pure nightmare evil. Special kudos to that.

Season 4 is woke trash. It wasn't written by the same guy that wrote seasons 1-3.

I managed to get through the first 2 episodes and shut it off. So fucking bad.

Episodes 1-5 are the only tv that I would put at the same level as the best movies of its genre.

It's as close as you get to a perfect 5-hour crime story ending with Rust checking the school.

6-8 fall into common tv trappings but it really doesn't spoil the best season of a television series.

Btw, i just noticed that google pushes s4 for most true detective results ugh.

I just watched this a few months ago because everyone was yelling on the internet about how great it was. Boy...everyone was spot on. What a great show.

Now I need to watch:
  • Peaky Blinders
  • Chernobyl
  • Shogun
  • Watchman
  • The Mare of Easttown

Watchmen HBO is awful, read the graphic novel instead.

Highly recommend Chernobyl and Mare of Easttown.

Just rewatched this due to the Agatha poster. Even better the second. So much detail in it I missed the first time. One of the smoothest intellecually fast-paced thrillers with clearly stated, cogent occult ideas sympathetically used as devices to alter the mind of the audience. Spectacular.

I love each season individually (except S4; Issa Lopez returning as showrunner for S5 is sacrilegious).

S2 is underrated. The Vinci shootout, subway tunnel shootout, Monterey cabin raid, and the finale among the Redwoods were all very well done.

I just wanted to say thank you. Actually because of your post I gave it another shot and I have to say with the time that had passed I ended up really loving it. I started season 2 not long after it released and could not get into it, I think it was too soon after I had watched season 1 and it was too different with characters that need more time to draw you in. Season 2 was great, I still think season 1 was better but I actually think Season 2 may be a better True Detective story in the pulpy James Ellroy fashion that I love. Anyway thanks again.

we need more quality movies/shows like this. just cops/detectives investigating cults and murder with a little horror sprinkled in. there is seven, there is TD season 1, silence of the lambs, zodiac, the girl with the dragon tattoo i guess but i can't think of that many more shows/movies of that quality with a great atmosphere

I just remembered, there's a season 4 coming with Jodi Foster. Could be good?

the worst piece of shit i have ever watched and i'm not exagerrating. it was like watching a mid tier CW show which i usually don't do but i watched the whole season because of the reviews, the TD name and hbo. i will definitely not watch season 5

The issue is those kinds of brooding, atmospheric, and engrossing mysteries are EXTREMEMLY difficult to pull off, as we have COUNTLESS examples of "prestigue TV" shows that try and end up as dull, exhausting, incoherent, fart sniffing, slogs that are a colossal waste of $$$ and acting talent that could have gone to simpler concepts with a better success rate.

Yeah I heard it was god awful and never bothered. I re watched season 1. Still one of the best seasons of a show going!

Yeah, S1 really was a true lightning in a bottle experience. The stars aligned perfectly. Even Pizzaman can't top it.

1>>2>4>3

What made Season 1 so amazing was that the investigation was always in the foreground and everything else, the fluff was in the background, and every episode you came closer to solving the mystery. In the other seasons the fluff was in the foreground and the investigation/mystery took a backseat.
