In an simultaneous interview with the German tabloid Bild and the British Times, Trump said NATO is obsolete, as members don't pay what they should do, and it doesn't fight terrorism.

He also critizised Merkel for her policy on immigrants (he calls them "illegals") and said BMW will have to pay a 35% tax for all cars produced in their new Mexico plant.

And apparently, he also stated that Brexit was a good thing to happen which will make the UK great again and that other EU countries are to follow en-suite, "as a friend told him".

And yes, he did that 10 months ago in an ABC interview, but he wasn't president-elect at that time...

Oh, and NATO does nothing against terror? Short memory Trump. America is the only country to ask NATO to go to war, in response to a terror attack.

It's not a very realistic worldview to assume that US dominance is a given, and not just the result of decades of smart international institution-building in their favour.

I'm sure that Donald came to this conclusion entirely on his own, and that has nothing to do with the fact that dismantling, dividing or otherwise weakening NATO is Russia's #1 foreign policy goal.

Americans elect man who believes NATO is obsolete, Muslims should be put on a database and climate change is a Chinese hoax.

Every major policy Trump has advocated seems to have been approved by, at least, 47% of the American electorate. Crucially, these positions are not new - he held them throughout his campaign and people readily embraced them.

Rather than portraying this as the words of a sole lunatic, it's time people here deal with the reality that half the country supports lunacy. The country is going to hell and all people seem to be debating is one man; it is infuriating to see how blind people are to the underlying causes.

I feel like this is racing toward the breaking point.

If Republicans are so deranged in their partisan fervor that they openly ignore Trump handing Putin everything he wants on a silver platter, then there's no longer any possibility of a national debate, no longer any potential for compromise, and no longer any peaceful scenario where both sides occupy the same country.

This is interesting given that I was just reading a textbook on this.

FWIW, I don't think this particularly has much to do with Russia. Hasn't the US been ignoring it more and more often anyway, given that it's effectively useless for preemptive warfare that realists like so much?

Ugh, well, at least it's not new news? He's been publically shitting on NATO since at least that mid-July NYT interview. Except that was kinda written off back then as dangerous but almost an accidental stream of consciousness rambling about matters he didn't even vaguely understand.

Poland is just a Russian exclave at the moment. Government runs the show closer to a repressive secret police state than a democracy.

It's really bad. I wonder if Obama put those tanks there to protect Poland from Russia or Poland from itself . . .
