Trump takes shots at Kaepernick, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field’

Pop on point as usual. It's crazy just how far ahead the NBA is compared to the NFL. In the NBA, players force the league to strip a team from a racist POS owner. In the NFL, owners force a player out of the league for being a "uppity n***er" who won't stand for a piece of cloth.
Goodell is an absolute piece of shit for letting the league get to where it is now. NFL is stuck in the 1950's. It's one of the reasons I personally stopped watching.

I commend the athletes that are taking a stance against the president on this. It still blows my mind the people who take issue against this. Like, every article on ESPN about an athlete taking issue on the presidents comments has some old white dude saying "you're just an athlete, we don't pay you for your political opinions" as the most up voted comment. I'm white, but it what world am I supposed to be able to understand the racial injustice of our society where I've never been able to experience it first hand. I mean, I try to be empathetic to the best of my ability; but that's still a far cry from experiencing it first hand. Just blows my mind that there are people who think they understand shit they've never been subjected to.

I could listen to Popovich speak all day. Guy really, truly gets it.

Popovich is the man. He says it how it is.

Upset people are going to lash out, people that agree are just going to nod their heads.

You also have what is probably a more pro Trump fan base that is being made uncomfortable. Want to hear the ignorance of an average fan, listen to sports radio and the geniuses that call in. These are the same people who will complain on Facebook.

Sharpe must have had some preacher training at some point lol. Put some reverb on him and add some Black church "mmhm" "Amen!"s in there and it wouldn't sound out of place. Great speaker.

It's funny because they're also the first people to pull the "You're supposed to be a role model!" line for something they did off field.

Iowa State's coach defended Allen Lazard's #TakeAKnee tweet.

I found this tidbit interesting, too:
"But Campbell said he would support players if they decided to make a symbolic statement.
”Whatever our guys do, you hope it's unified, you hope it's powerful," Campbell said."

ISU plays Texas on Thursday night at 7pm on ESPN. I don't see them doing anything, but it'd garner a ton of spotlight if they did.

This is such a tired argument. There are and were more players than just Kaep who were kneeling. There are players, owners, the commish, and local movements (like Malcolm Jenkins and the Eagles) who work on these issues.

I mainly boycott it because of the lack of any kind of care on the players safety. This just adds fuel to the fire

Fair enough but the league and game is violent in nature. There is research in safer helmets and they have reduced practices, changed rules on the hits, and other minor moves but it will never be enough.

How the hell did the left get the reputation for being snowflakes? The whining and chest pumping I'm seeing on Facebook is maddening. Remember this is because a few people knelt during the National Anthem. Yet when black people are killed by cops with no repercussion, you don't hear a peep from them except to say "he was a thug."

It's hilarious seeing people "done" with their favorite football team for kneeling. Okay.

If you say a thing enough it becomes true. Since it makes the left seem weak it was a great talking point to parrot.

Have we mentioned how the actual National Anthem written my Keys actually has a 4th verse :

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a Country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And it sang about the death of slaves who were fighting for their freedom at that time. The British recruited them with the promise of freedom.

A fifth verse was written by Oliver Wendell Holmes right after the civil war, but I don't think it was ever considered official

When our land is illum'd with Liberty's smile,
If a foe from within strike a blow at her glory,
Down, down, with the traitor that dares to defile
The flag of her stars and the page of her story!
By the millions unchain'd who our birthright have gained
We will keep her bright blazon forever unstained!
And the Star-Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave
While the land of the free is the home of the brave.

And I believe it calls the South a 'foe' and celebrates the emancipation and acceptance of slaves into society

Some, and I agree, think we should sing the part we do now, along with this fifth verse.

So yea, the original Star Spangled Banner was kinda racist.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders at today's press briefing:

REPORTER: Sarah, when Colin Kaepernick says that his protest is about fighting police brutality, fighting racial disparity, racial injustice, you're not taking him at his word. You're saying the focus has long since moved on. But when white supremacists say that their protest is about heritage, not hate, the president does take them at their words. So, why is there this disparity about who gets to decide what protest is about?

SARAH HUCKABEE SANDERS: I think if the debate is really, for them, about police brutality, they should probably protest the officers on the field that are protecting them instead of the American flag.

Way to completely miss the point.

Everyone in the country grew up with their own life experiences that shaped their beliefs and opinions - its OK to listen to them and why they feel the way they do, no need to get into a huge fight because they have opposite beliefs then us. Like you said, they really dislike Trump - but they have strong feelings about respecting the flag. That's OK for them to feel that way. Talk to them, but most importantly Listen to them - learn why they feel the way they do. They have their own life experiences and they were raised in a different world then you were. Arguing and fighting with those that feel differently then us is not the way to go about any of this.

Except every time someone says to just listen to the other side, it's almost always one-sided and the opposite side never listens to the other's POV(s). So that conversation where one listens is unproductive in the grand scheme of things. Additionally, just because someone is molded by their life experiences and has certain beliefs, doesn't mean that belief isn't wrong, I'm gonna post what I said earlier about people who defend the anthem but lack the perspective required to understand what defending the anthem actually means:

What I STILL don't understand from people defending the anthem so much.

1) Did people just suddenly forget about the historical context surrounding the anthem itself? The author of the anthem being a slave-owner, and having verses that pretty much echoes the same point being made today: that black people were inferior in about every way and any defense of their rights would be seen as negative. Particularly this verse that was wiped away that no one seems to remember:

Just because it was wiped away, doesn't negate the issues of the anthem itself (in addition, I say this as someone who is anti-anthem because there is no relevance to today's times). The verse in question is tied to ideas about how Key was butthurt about slaves fleeing after the British offered a better situation for them in exchange for joining their cause, which resulted in the formation of the Colonel Marines. Amazing how much history repeats itself because Key thought it was appalling for Blacks to stand up for their rights, in the same way that people get so offended when black and marginalized people stand up for their rights. Having researched the anthem, I strongly feel that to defend the anthem would be akin to defending the statues that were torn down because of its roots in racism.

2) Why is there so much hyperidealization going on when it comes to the anthem as well as what it represents in the eyes of people? People conflate the meaning of the anthem as if it refers to American men who fought in WW1, and WW2 when its roots is actually in the War of 1812 (which was to fight off the British Empire, so notions of freedom doesn't really apply as well in this case). Not to mention the hypocrisy of silencing dissent when they fail to realize that if they argue freedom, then you must realize that you also have the freedom to voice your displeasure with the country as a whole. "Well if you don't like it then gtfo," misses the whole point unless you're intentionally obtuse and are the human representation that "ignorance is bliss." No country is without flaws and people should be working towards eliminating as many of these flaws as possible, not devolving and sticking to broken systems and formulas.

Additionally, I find it hypocritical to argue "disrespecting the flag"/"disrespecting the military" because it's being selective with history. No one mentions how marginalized groups like Natives and First Nations have become ostracized when the colonizers took over their land, so they pick "disrespecting the flag" as the hill to die on? All I'm saying is if you're going to make the argument that disrespecting the flag is a thing then: 1) recognize that the flag is a completely arbitrary creation of false and hyperidealized notions of what it means to be a good country, and 2) have the perspective to realize that the flag was and is not eternal, people were fucked over to get to this point in society.

/end rant

It's high time that people stopped listening to the other side and learn to stamp out ideas that are toxic, arbitrary and unproductive to society.

Exactly. It's the same reason why Republicans think liberals want to take away all of their guns and that there is a War against Christianity, Christmas, America and the Military. Whatever Fox News or Rush Limbaugh says gets parroted by their indoctrinated fan base.

Damn the Trump era is going to look absolutely horrendous in the history books, and with the internet there is absolutely no way they can try to reconstruct it to look better, that trick wont work this time. Its just so damn bad, day after day of unprofessionalism, stupidity, antics, chaos, hypocrisy constantly broadcasted.

Jordan still owns private prisons. He can go fuck himself

Damn I didn't fucking know this. I'm glad you told me. I'm going to spread the word more and yeah he can fuck himself and his brand.

How people digest "facts" these days makes me sad.

I'm pretty sure this internet myth has been debunked.

Didn't that get debunked?

It was this Michael Jordan

Way to throw your teammates under the bus, you coward.

The best part is the fact that this isn't going to please anyone. The people who are mad about the protest are still going to give him shit, but now the folks who were on his side are going to hate him now too. Half-measures don't get you anywhere worth a damn you moron.

The statement is complete shit, but I doubt Ben would have put it out if they had just come out normally and some players knelt and some stood.

This entire thing blew up in Tomlin's face because the entire team didn't agree like the Titans and Seahawks did. When you have AV out there by himself, it puts the light on the rest of the team and makes them look bad.
