Trump threatens to abandon Puerto Rico relief efforts

Puerto Rico is mostly white...but they speak Spanish so I guess they're considered Mexico-Lite by Trump
Oh, I know. Was mostly making fun of the exclamation thing and how he, like you say, considers PR people to be mexicans.

However, that Texas vs PR comparison posted above said it a lot better than I did. Fucking asshole.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is this problem with this?

If the "Electric and all infrastructure" was already messed up before then why would anyone expect the relief support to fix that as well? In the end it's up to Congress to decide how much will be spent to help with the support not Trump, isn't he just stating facts here?

I don't understand why people are upset over it as it seems a logical decision? I'm just going with the article though so I don't know about any other things that may be present.

Feigning ignorance to support an otherwise undefendable position is a dated, ineffective tactic.

I don't think he means this, he just says it because he knows his racist 32% base or whatever is all he has. So his life is a serious of publicity stunt statements to make sure that flame is lit with them, if it dims and they become reasonable he has nothing.

I think he really thought he could make everyone love him while being a piece of shit behind the scenes, and he's not thrilled that everyone hates him. So now he rebels and keeps his base happy at any cost.

It's really sad for america. He likely hates his life in the White House, I wish he'd resign peacefully. I'll take anyone over this guy who attacks his people and foreign leaders in times of crisis. How sad.

Lol.......

Holy hell this level of ignorance is incredibly dangerous...as we can see since the election last year. Use your fucking brain and think about why people have a problem with this. Do some research of your own before coming in just asking questions on why people are upset.

There is nothing undefendable about it, as someone pointed out Puerto Ricans are Americans, something I did not know, hence my original comment. Had it been a separate country then they are more than free to pull out if required, the world works this way and people need to take emotion out of it.

I'm not cursing at the US every morning because they are not here using their resources to feed, clothe and house the children I drive past living on the street every morning.

However with them actually being American Citizens changes the entire outlook and their resources should be used to help their own people.

There was no hidden meaning or any malice behind my original comment.

Shocking news? Nothing this guy does surprises me. I knew this would happen. He was an animal before. He's an animal today.

Trump had me livid over stuff he was saying about other Latinx - and any marginalized group - in the past. But I've had a hard time getting angry over this as a (stateside) Puerto Rican, I'm just extremely depressed.

I've at least heard from some of my family on the island in the past week, which has been a relief.

My thanks go out to everyone of GAF showing support.

What, exactly, is the $3-4 billion in taxes Puerto Ricans pay to the US Govt every year supposed to be for if federal disaster relief from the US is optional or has an expiry date?

It's to meet the demands of Congress, be in compliance with the law and avoid the consequences if they elect not to pay. Congress should authorize more spending to Puerto Rico so the US gov't can take care of the financial side of the problem.

My family on the island is still living in a shelter because their homes are nothing more than sand.

Thanks for the help!

So, #1 Puerto Rico is a US territory populated by US citizens. Every one that dies is no different than if the government was allowing disaster victims of any other place where citizens live such as Texas and California.

#2 Puerto Rico pays taxes with the expectation that they'll receive aid and support from the federal government.

#3 We can fight endless wars with a near blank check because it 'might' save some American lives, but when they're dying right in front of us, the bill is too high? Get the fuck out of here with that logic.

Are you really this dense or just disingenuous?

Behind a closed iron door. Paul Ryan would think that's the right place as a person who doesn't give a fuck about minority citizens either.

Pretty much. All we need to know about Paul Ryan is he dreams of taking away the social safety net while at kegger parties. He literally has no other desire in life except screwing over people.

You should continue to read threads, information was given and responded too.

Where do you live? Because your response was that you didn't know they were Americans, doubling down on your "ignorance".

Indeed. Don't make stupid comments about how people deserve to suffer when you supposedly don't even know the whole story. There's too much disinformation going around these days to not assume you aren't intentionally trying to peddle shit. I can't give you a benefit of the doubt.

Worst president in American history (yes I know about Andrew Jackson/Johnson, Trump is worse) and also one of the worst human beings in all of history. That's one hell of an accomplishment.

Apparently to Trump,

"All American citizens are equal, but some American citizens are more equal than others".

Wtf they are Americans, you get I'm there and you fix the issue. Fuck if he said this about Texas people would be losing their minds

Only 7 more years of this...

(I'm not American, but I'm horrified watching this shitfest unfold from across the pond.)

South Africa, so American history surrounding Puerto Rico was not part of our syllabus hence not knowing, thankfully after numerous posts someone actually responded informatively and thus I learnt something new.

This, in conjunction with everything he’s dimension thus far, should really prompt impeachment. It’s fucking amazing how spineless our legislators are.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.

That's not how it works.
Trump can lose in 2020 and only get one term.
There's no such thing as an "eight-year term"

It's to meet the demands of Congress, be in compliance with the law and avoid the consequences if they elect not to pay.

So, basically: Puerto Ricans pay $3-4 billion annually to the US govt. to avoid the consequences of not doing so, rather than there being any tangible benefit to doing so.

Sounds about right.

Now you're claiming that your original "what is the problem with this" question was really a totally innocent way to learn about US geography.

That's simply not believable.

This has to be the most racist president we have had in decades. Unbelievable. This was always my biggest problem with him. Even more than everything else.

He is just plain immoral. It's one thing to have a conservative ideology like the other 20 republicans running for president had. But this guy is just a monster.

Puerto Rico being a U.S. territory is referenced in the first sentence of the excerpt posted in the OP.

It's pretty horrifying.

I have friends and family in PR, and they're all without food, water, electricity and jobs. One of them described the state of things as being apocalyptic. Most of them are moving to the mainland until things get better and I see this being a path many people on this island take, especially if they start cutting back on relief efforts.

No that's you grasping at straws.

Orignally I didn't know hence my comment when I found out I replied accordingly, so keep grasping.

but

they are americans

I went onto Fox News' comment section today.

The first comment I saw was someone loudly proclaiming they weren't citizens, and another started blaming them because they're 'socialists'.

Granted, they actually got dog piled somewhat but yeah... You're not dealing with the smartest base here.
