Trump's FCC Votes to Allow Broadband Rate Hikes for Schools and Libraries

Anyone know how much they were being charged before and how much they're expected to rise?

There is no hard and set number and it will vary on the requirements of the business. It's not like a home ISP where you just get internet. You'll likely have specific requirements to be met based on the needs of the business or school. The school I worked in went to bid on gigabit internet and we got a proposal from Verizon, Optimum and a few random ISP's in the area. Optimum was cheaper than Verizon by a significant amount.

The article states prices could rise as high as 25%. For a school IT budget this could be pretty significant increase.

Do Republicans pretend these anti-consumer votes are in some backhanded way good for the American people or is it too obvious to bullshit around and they have to go into full "Fuck the middle and lower class" mode.

I hope Ajit Pai finds his moral compass someday. He stands to do tremendous, lasting damage.

Care to surmise about what will cause the crash? I've been thinking about that myself the last several days.

Constant commodification of public goods and services, the lies and myths of austerity, and the decoupling of human capital in labor will all intertwine and create a cocktail of depravity.

I mean, some people are already saying the United States is losing its developed nation status.

I think automation will be the huge issue, as it finalizes the problem of "The Great Decoupling" we see already with productivity and income. The rest will just mix and make this poison increasingly toxic.

They don't go to libraries, so who cares? (This works as an overview of many Republican budget cuts in history.)

Tyranny of that majority.

I read that article earlier today. I know we're on a freight train to disaster, but I'm wondering what the tipping point will be?

Joe Six-Pack: posting for the common man
Naturally.

Yet another demonstration of what a commitment to always being the better man got Obama, the Democratic party, and this nation as a whole.

i was thinking the same. It really sucks how dirty the republicans play. And how the dems never countered any of it, they just expected everyone to play fair.

considering the library is one of the two main ways I use the internet, this is going to really fucking suck.

Step 1: Slash budgets to schools
Step 2: Increase operating costs for schools
Step 3: Blame schools for not being able to provide the service they are being paid to do
Step 4: Repeat

And at the end say "see? public schools are failing! THIS is why we need our charter option!"

Won't this just lead to the DoE having to spend more money on public schools and libraries to pay for it though?

I mean, the whole reason for limiting the rate hikes was to save the federal & local governments money on education spending.

It's not actually targeted towards libraries and schools. It's more of a small business thing

but they don't intend to fund public schools either

Ya, I'm wondering this too. If it was crazy lower than market rates I can see why they want to end this. It's still a business.

The whole fucking point of a regulated monopoly is to regulate the monopoly so that quantity is higher.

This argument is nonsense.

It SHOULD be lower than market rates.

You can't have a market rate without a market. Without regulation, the rate is whatever the monopoly says it is. You might say -- "well then nobody will buy it". They don't care, these are rural areas they're mostly forced to serve

As a network administrator at a community college, I am very concerned about this ruling. Especially considering we're looking to upgrade our bandwidth next year.

And yes, everything about AT&T services sucks.

The worst thing to happen to the world is given the power to make life changing decisions. Still baffling by how stupid those voters are.

I remember seeing someone write (i'm paraphrasing) that trump supporters would gladly let him shit in their mouths as long as democrats would have to smell it

WHAT THE FUCK!? As a teacher, this shit just fills me with rage! There's kids who don't have broadband at home, now they can't get it at school or the public library? FUCK YOU TRUMP AND YOUR FUCKING CRONIES. GET FUCKED (in a bad way)!

Seriously, the internet is basically a requirement of everyday life. Even for those "bootstraps" assholes, you can't get a fucking job these days without having internet to apply online. I guess then those voters who thought that fat orange fucktard would actually get them more jobs will never be able to see that the jobs aren't there because they won't have internet.

We need some of that travel ban airport outrage turnout for this shit too.
