Trying to get myself into the HDTV loop. Looking at some 30-34" HDTV CRT TVs. HDMI?

no its one of those tv resolution things.

CNET are referring to the number of horizontal lines. thus the awe. If u plug in a HTPC and set the resolution to 1920 X 1440 u will get a rock solid, pin sharp image.

There is a thread buried in AVSforum about this but i haven't got time to track it down.

I'll go back to dreaming of my Qualia now whilst reading all thus Gartner shit for work

I took the plunge today and got the sony 30" KV30hs420...yes i know its there lowest end set..but i got it at $550. ITS BEAUTIFUL with dvd's, video games and well sd is alright but it shines with high def feeds.

Enjoy! How are you receiving HD feeds, out of curiousity?

Can someone tell me if the HT27744 model HDtv from sanyo is any good ?

It's only available at canadian walmart apparently but its only 600 canadian and sounds like it has alot of features for that small price. I'm assuming if it says its an HDTV that it can do 480 P atleast which is currently what I want atleast.

Here is its page for those interested in checking things out for me, I read moogles FAQ on these things and know how to hook these sorts of tvs up but what I want to know is wether this tv is worth buying , or if I should just save up more money to buy something better.

http://www.sanyo.com/entertainment/televisions/digital/index.cfm?productID=911

I mean it sounds good but yeah, any help would be mucho appreaciato.

Without seeing the model in person, it's really hard to tell. But on a strictly feature-by-feature comparison, it seems to support 480p, 720p, 1080i, and HDMI. So it's certainly a step up over a normal rounded TV. There's some controversy over whether it natively handles 480p or upconverts everything to 1080i.

I would also point out that according to Sanyo's specs, it only has 800 lines of resolution, which is a bad thing in some cases (I imagine that puts 1080i at something like 1400x800 rather than 1920x1080), but might not matter considering the size of the TV. It's hard to say without literally hooking up GT4 1080i right then and there.

AVS Forum thread one (1000+ replies - thread covers the 27, 30, and 32 inch versions of this model)

AVS Forum thread two (1000+ replies - thread covers the 27, 30, and 32 inch versions of this model)

If you really want to get the set, the best thing you can do is read those threads and then make up your own mind. Personally, I'm not at all convinced by Sanyo products (build quality and picture quality both usually have some concerns), and I'd rather buy a good Sony, Hitachi, or LG set, but this one may very well be viable for the extremely low-cost crowd. Read through the thread (selectively if need be) to figure out what you want to do.

for tubes i've read through AVS forum and they really love the sony XS and XBR lines. They offer the best detail and 720p resolution....i went with mine because well it was really cheap and still offered hd and i am moving soon so i'll just but a thin set later

Here's another question for you then moogle, how is it a 4:3 tv can do 1080i resolution ?

does it just cripple its native resolution with cropping bars and place a 1080i image inside it ?

also this green bar problem I read about on these avs forums may stem from progressive scan incompatibilty, the xbox is a 480i dvd player but maybe if the tv thinks its getting a progressive image it messes up and sticks green lines in instead of displaying the full image.. ?

Idono, it just seems odd to me that a tv seemingly this good would be so cheap if there wasn't something wrong with it in some way...

Jotaro- you tell me , whats the diszneal yo. Do you play games, dvd's etc with it ?

I wish I could tell you, my eyes are so sensible because of my tumor, that just looking at it for a few seconds burn my retinas to death (cause it's a CRT). But I had Ninja Gaiden with an Xbox playing, in 480p and dare I say, it was worth the burning.

Also sometimes I unwillingly looked at anime that was playing, I'd say the same thing.

And Shrek 2. Take all that as you will. ;)

I'd love to help you out more and rely more on my personal experiences. I'd like to actually be able to really use the unit. :(

Rather then start a brand new thread, I figured I'd just dig up the last good one on the OT boards.

Recently Best Buy was advertising a new HDTV from Mag Innovision-
HERE

Is this actually a good TV or what ? its a 1000 dollars less then the same sized model from Benq, which I saw in store and it seemed really very nice.
Here

The benq model, upon using the comparisn thing that bestbuy's website has seems to actually be missing some of the things the cheaper model has... What would most be worth my while do you think ? Going and checking the MAG tv out in person to see why its so much less ? or does someone here have one and can vouch for it. It's still awful expensive for a TV but its the cheapest one I've seen for that size, I mean the benq model is 2500 bucks. After taxes and a service plan and what have you that's like 3 grand.

Any help would be appreaciated.
