Trying to play other games after TLoU

Deus Ex, as a quick example off the top of my head, and it wouldn't even be my top choice.

Actually, it's not really a good example as the gameplay in Deux Ex was actually fresh, innovative and, over time, deeply influential. Unlike TLOU's which is basically more of the same stuff we've seen before, only in a different package.
Eh, if that's the game you're going to choose, we should just agree to disagree. :)

This is how I felt (and sort of still feel) after Dark Souls

EXACTLY.

After playing TLOU, I want to do nothing but play more of it-- very similar symptoms.
I only have eyes for The Last of Us it seems, for the time being.

I'm on my third through and I suspect I'll do one more before I start weening myself off of it.

Yeah, I'm thinking of doing a third and fourth playthrough myself (Survivor and Survivor +). I hear scissors are hard to find in Survivor, though, which intimidates me since shivs and nail bombs are my bread and butter. :-\

I have the same "problem" as the op does. I have Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, Remember Me and Borderlands 2 DLC on my shelf, but instead I've started a playthrough on Survivor difficulty (started and finished on Normal) and I'm trying TLOU multiplayer. Standard practice for (most?) GAFfers I'm sure, but not moving on when I have attractice alternatives is pretty atypical for me.

I mean, yeah, it's a great game. However, watching a fantastically deep film still doesn't make me lose appreciation for Independence Day. You just need to look at games for what they are, rather than trying to hold them to an impossibly high standard. Some games try to hit you with dark depths like TLoU and others are completely devoid of story. Just go play Animal Crossing or Mario.

Yeah exactly how I feel. I can't take my mind of it when I hold the ds3. Good thing I haven't finished it yet.

And yeah, you could also just play the game again. I'm on my fourth playthrough.
Fourth play through of a 15+ hour game in just over two weeks? Man, that's dedication/obsession!

I'm a few hours in, haven't played games in like a week. I don't know what's going on, I really should play and finish it this week, the part I played was great.

Has Metro: Last Light being recommended?

If not, play Metro: Last Light with the stealth approach you've learned in TLOU.

You will adore the game.

I've started four games since and can't be bothered with any of them. I'll probably just play TLoU some more and wait for GTA.

Yeah, I just can't get Ellie out of my head. I can't get the overall game out my head.
I've never really felt like this before, about any game. Maybe I need to stop gaming for a while.

I feel the same way. I don't really care for other games besides TLOU. I just started playing Hotline Miami though and it's nice. Other games pale in comparison.

This. I bought Hotline Miami yesterday and it´s awesome ( i bought it for the Vita but you cant cross buy it in the PS3 or buy the PC version ), a little addictive marvel. Other good option is Metro last light, very good game. If you have a Vita Persona 4 Golden would be a great change in mood, it´s that good.
Xcom is also a valid answer if you like tactical games.
Although if you haven´t played Uncharted 2 that is the best answer...

SO what exactly are you looking for, the feeling of a journey with an awesome moment of concusion?
that's what was the biggest point of the Last of Us for me.
If so Spec Ops the Line does a similar thing, so it should have done it.
However even the Last Of Us took till the second half to hit its stride so are you giving up on the games too early?
Games like TLOU and Spec Ops take a while to get to the good part, you shoud give them more time.
A game that I feel has done this better than TLOU is Portal 2, but then again, that game was supported with characters with more charm and charisma with a huge emphasis on humor.
If character chemistry is what your looking for, then might I recommend Persona 4, my all time favorite game, Ghost Trick is a good choice too.
Oh, and since we are talking about awesome games that need time to get to there stride, the Walking Dead kinda needs the same kind of chance I said Spec Ops should have.
Oh, and if TLOU has made you unable to try AAA games then try something else that does not compete with it so you don't compare it to that game.
Dark Souls and XCOM are good choices in my opinion.
Try different kinds of games now and you will get back to them later.

Same here OP, nothing scratches that itch anymore, the last of us was truly something else. I want more experiences like that.

Shadow Of The Colossus.

It's the same envelope pushing narrative, a contemplative journey and a game you become lost in due to the atmosphere. It would be a great game to play after The Last Of Us, while still not being the same type of game.

You still get to use a bow, though!

I think this is a hilarious scenario, but hey - different strokes.

My suggestion would be to play something utterly mechanical, where emphasis is as far removed from 'story' or 'characterisation' as possible.

Or just go play Metro: Last Light and enjoy an Eastern Bloc stalk through the tunnels. Lord knows Russian/Ukranian developers tout fine wares.

Or go and play DoomRL and watch a good TV series. I don't think I've read something quite as quaintly wet as the OP in years.

I liked the game a lot, art and style in spades and really epic feeling, but the controls made it hard!.

I tried a bunch of new games this weekend but they all seemed stale and boring. Can anyone recommend a game like TLoU that will grip me and make me play for hours on end?

I've really missed that feeling and I had it for the past 2 weeks. :(

PS: The games I tried were Spec Ops: The Line, Max Payne 3, Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 and The Walking Dead. They are all decent but I'm just not enthralled lol

I also have Uncharted 2 and 3 to play but I'm wary of playing them so soon after a newer ND game and being let down. :

Try again :)

Marvellous game. Try that!

I own a copy of TLoU now, but haven't played it yet. Reading through this thread has left me terrified of even starting the game. What will I do once I've played such a masterpiece? What will life be like? How will I ever move on, and what will be the point? I imagine food will just taste like ashes in my mouth after having experienced such glory.

OP should really try playing Uncharted 2 & 3 next. Until this point I had held them as the absolute pinnacle of the medium. I even keep them on their own seperate shelf, so they aren't sullied by all the other, lesser video games in my collection. You surely will not be disappointed!

To me, the only one that can rival with the last of us in terms of emotions would be Silent Hill 2... (Shadow of the Colossus or Journey are good choices too...)

Come on mate, TLOU isn't bad, its definitely in the same league as Spec Ops if not higer.

I was saying that Spec Ops isn't in the same league as TLOU ;)
I atually finished my second playthrough on the highest difficulty shortly before playing TLOU and it's great, but really not up there with TLOU.

Why not try something completely different than first/third person action games? Plenty of nice puzzlers, shmups etc out there. I find 2D platformers a nice palette cleanser in between the big AAA releases.

Why even play games?

I only play games every 3 year so I can get Naughty Dog's finest.

It's the only way to be sure.

;-)
