Twitch Plays Pokemon Thread 3: Return of Red... Aussies win again!

Haha I dug up my Red copy about a week ago and played through it. So much fun. I'd play on Silver, too, but the battery's dead, although I have been considering going for a speedrun without saves. Wish I still had a wall plug for the Gameboy.
I booted up my old Silver months ago and my save file was corrupted. I had maxed the game clock on that sonofabitch. My Tyranitar wrecked everything.

I never finished the postgame in Black 2. Might go back to that someday. I just don't have the motivation. Pokémon is one of the few series I still get enjoyment out of, but what's the point, really, when you don't have live humans to battle and trade with? Maybe when I have kids I'll settle back into the series as they're introduced to it. Unless there's something new by then.

I don't know what the pace of X/Y was like, but B/W2 was too slow. It wasn't painful the same way D/P was, but it still took too long to sit through. Text, animation, and so on. I wish everything moved just a little faster.

Well, by the time you have kids and can get them into gaming Digimon will have completed its revolution and taken over the world. :)

I completely, 100%, absolutely agree with you about the speed and pacing. D/P was unbearable, so much so that the farthest I've gotten is about halfway through. B/W was better, but still too slow. X/Y introduces all kinds of new modes for transportation, like roller skates, Pokemon, taxis, etc. which may help speed up getting to one place or another. But animations and text are probably at the same speed, if not slower because of 3D. I'm inclined to believe it's still slow overall.

X/Y isn't bad (outside of horde battles lagging), but then again I didn't find B/W2 bad either. Also, there's always online for stuff. Competitive Pokemon battling can be pretty fun if you're willing to put the time in.

I'm actually liking some of the new lore. Basically, the Gater is on a journey with AJ to defeat Lord Helix and the other Gods in the name of his fallen comrades. He's continuing to fight, continuing to carry the team, despite the hate he gets. It's charming, though it doesn't make the actual stream any more interesting to watch.

This really lost all its appeal when Democracy was introduced, made even more evident now during this run where it has been used to blaze through the entire game.

Like I said back in one of the old threads, we shouldn't have been given the option to vote at all. If we end up stuck at a part of the game for a whole week with no progress, so be it. When the numbers go down and a dedicated group works through it, it becomes a much bigger moment of triumph that would have drawn people back in, letting the cycle continue.

I've barely been paying attention to this ever since Democracy was introduced back in the rocket hideout in Red, but from what i can tell, that decision has led to a slow downward spiral in entertainment quality and stream viewers, especially now that people don't have their stupid forced meme's ("LOL HELIX, BIRD JESUS") to fall back on.

tl;dr: Creator should have continued the experiment in an anarchy state the whole time, because democracy has turned it into a boring non-entertaining lets play where nothing unexpected happens and the game is finished relatively quickly. The glory days of "the ledge" were what made the stream entertaining, and that element was taken away to encourage progress. Even if it took 2 months to finish one game, or a game becomes impossible to finish, that is a better story than the one currently being witnessed.

I'm not sure how you can even link the introduction of democracy to the stream losing "all its appeal," when there barely seems to be any causation - let alone correlation - between the two.

It's just that the first go-through of the game was extremely time-consuming and eventually people had to get back to their lives. The streamer could have laid low for a while and returned in a couple months, but honestly I'm not sure anything could have staved off this slowly dropping off in popularity.

Why the hell every time I turn on TPP it's on Democracy mode?
Every fuckin time.
That's what killed it for me.

It's the hourly system. I said it was terrible, but nobody believed me.

Holy crap. I just peeked onto the stream and barely anyone was typing commands and then it switched to democracy and the stream goes nuts with commands everywhere.

We would be in constant democracy if the old voting system was still around.

It goes into democracy automatically every hour on the hour, and it usually lasts from around 1 minute to 30 minutes depending on the task (usually just about 1 or 2 minutes to get back to anarchy, at most). Just tune in a little bit later and you'll see anarchy. :P But right now they want to get through Pryce's gym in a timely manner, another thing that could be done in anarchy easily.

I agree. There is some nice lore already.

Everyone is just so doom and gloom and dwelling on the last run. The stream still has a decent number of watchers even tho the stream is not getting any free publicity from gaming sites anymore. And to be honest I am enjoying the gameplay maybe even more than last time. The lore of course is not yet on same levels of greatness.

Watching the gator one hit KO everyone is kind of boring tho. Luckily people seem to agree and he's not the first one in the party right now.

We will be facing Pryce shortly, if A.J. can navigate the icy floor...

Yup. It's pretty telling that I find the subreddit more entertaining than the actual stream.

The real problem with this run is the overleveled Gator. in the first or second slot

Pidgeot and Hoothoot are pretty high leveled as well. Pidgeot even has three attacking moves (although whirlwind is in the top slot). It's not down to just Feraligatr anymore.

I can't and will never be able to compete with kids EV hunting and IV farming and dedicating days and weeks to finding Pokémon with complimentary personalities. Trying to keep up with that level of commitment and persistence would be like working a second full time job.

I prefer a face-to-face social competition to an anonymous online one.

I like dicking around with my Pokémon choices anyway. My team in B/W was all-mustachioed. In B/W2 it relied heavily on gimmicks like Shedinja. I don't aim to be competitive, I aim to see what can be done within funny constraints.

Yeah that stuff is crazy. One of my friends does all that EV/IV stuff, breeding, competitive battling, etc. I can't manage. I like my Pokemon games to be simple enough where I can grind enough to beat the Elite 4 and not worry too much about strategy or meta game. I don't have time for that.

It only would take 2 hours at most to get 5 Pokemon ready for battling, and I may be overestimating that as well.

This is a misconception. It's been much easier in X/Y than previous games.

XY actually made that a hell of a lot easier. EV training takes like 15-30 minutes tops, and breeding probably only takes like 1-4 hours depending on how lucky you get (and I usually overlap it with internet time since you absolutely don't need to pay attention to the game as you go). It still takes some time for sure, but it's honestly not that bad anymore.

The stream dipped constantly because we kept going in the direction of overlevelled pokes. I mean, let's say in R/B we got a Mewtwo, a Mew, a Dragonite, and all 3 legendary birds. There was no way we would lose. There's no fun in wiping out an opponent, and even worse when you're watching it.

R/B was still pretty popular despite getting Zapdos tho, but i bet it would've been more awesome if we didn't have to depend on a legendary.

It's still something I'd never want to do, meaning fighting someone online is something I'll never do.

Red without Zapdos would've been x20 better: we would have won with Bird Jesus, the Keeper, Digrat, Cabbage, AIR and our lord the Helix. Winning with such shit team would've made for an even greater ending to the game and to the lore.

True. But the capture of Zapdos was also one of the more hype things about Red.

I saw a lot of "They did WHAT?!" reactions when people learned that Zapdos had been caught, in Anarchy mode no less. AA-j changed things, both for better and for worse in Red. But it definitely changed things. Kept things fresh. And bloody.

Zapdos led to Bloody Sunday though, which was a great moment for the lore.

What's changed?
Getting the right IV spread is made easier now since it perfect IV'd Pokemon abundantly available to be used for breeding.

EV training takes 15 minutes tops due to horde battles + Pokerus + Power Items.

If you go to the Pokemon XY OT, people can help you get started and that will makes things really easy.

Hence why in one of my posts on this matter in the previous thread (iirc) I said we should have captured him but never used him. Catching him was hype as fuck (wish I were there to see it), using him not so much.

Yeah. I think everything surrounding Zapdos really added to the game and was a net positive for the stream.

Really, people actually do that? I didn't think anyone honestly took the time, especially when every competitive player I've seen just used Pokegen.

It's like leveling to 100 in Red/Blue. Everyone I knew used the Missingo item duplication trick.

General Lazor is just too damn powerful. Absolutely crazy, Bird Jesus and AA-j looked tame in comparison.

Can you play online with a freakbirthed Pokegen Frankenstein?

I've used Pokegen to fill out my Pokedex but it feels wrong making a generated Pokemon a core member of the team.

I agree Crystal doesn't have the same mojo that the first game had, but the memes will live on forever. I hope someone figures out how to make "Twitch Plays Dark Souls" happen. Imagine the fun!

It's because the opponent levels in GSC are so laughably low. Solo'ing is actually the fastest way to get through the damn game, well except with Meganium, Meganium sucks.

I've always done it. Like I said it's not too bad nowadays. Plus it makes me feel attached to my team members in a way I can't imagine I'd get from just hacking them in. I dunno, just never felt right about cheating either way.

Can you play online with a freakbirthed Pokegen Frankenstein?

The website says it keeps "Pokemon legal in terms of the game itself", and it's openly endorsed for competitive play (though not by Nintendo, not that anyone would ever knew you used it), so I'm guessing no. I've never used it though, so maybe!

But even using Pokegen to fill out strategically precise stats/movesets/abilities/items/etc. on Pokemon seems like just to much work for me. Also part of the reason I don't feel like fighting online, because most of the time I get demolished because I didn't spend as much time learning how to exploit mechanics as someone else. Especially when they use hacked Pokemon (although you can't really tell if they are). That's why I just enjoy playing the games for fun, anything else is a chore.

As a note, if Skill Swap is unbreedable onto Banette, only tutorable, I'll be stuck with Gen Vs breeding system to get a perfect IV Banette with Skill Swap.

That shit is going to take forever. But no substitutes.

EDIT: On-topic, this pryce puzzle is so close yet so far. The string of commands isn't that complicated, and it's easily restarted with little time between tries. But one slip up and you might be unable to go back to where you were and the mob still can't cooperate.

It's doable in anarchy though.

Cool, we're in Pryce's Gym. Even cooler, they haven't resorted to democracy to cheat their way through yet. This is definitely possible in anarchy; I'm looking forward to the moment they get to Pryce then slide away before talking to him.

Serebii claims it's transfer only. So yeah, good luck! I've just given up on ever bothering with that crap. The move tutor stuff is the one thing that still really needs to be dealt with. Especially since there's ridiculous nonsense like Body Slam Togekiss requiring you to go all the way back to gen III... yuck.

I am perfectly happy with my completely EV-random Pokemon with personalities fortuitously yet constantly opposing their base stats.

We were close once. They have tried using democracy some but we always switch back to anarchy before we actually start going anywhere in the gym. I'm looking forward to making it in anarchy, too. It's not that hard of a puzzle.

So it sounds like the best solution to revive the ages of the lore in crystal is to...

... TO RELEASE THE GATOR! FLAREON STYLE!!

Why would you teach Body Slam to a Togekiss when its' more of a special attacker?

It was actually a thing, at least back in Gen IV. I believe it was to have a means of paralyzing Ground types to max the para-flinch hax.

Edit: It's even still hanging around in Smogon's B/W OU analysis for Togekiss. But yeah, definitely fallen out of favor. I just remember it because I recall thinking there was no way I was ever going to bother with that bs of breeding it back in Gen III.
