Twitch streaming from PS4 is now live

Yeah, the resolution can suck at times. Hopefully this is something that will improve over time. But for me, personally, its about accessibility. The chances of me ever streaming something from my PC or hooking up external shit to my console to stream would be pretty much zero.

But if I can just click a button to do it? Sure, why not?

This is the kind of quality twitch.tv is capable of(I don't watch that channel btw, it's just a quality example). What the PS4 is outputting is a huge downgrade from that.

Hopefully these are just temporary settings that will be used for the first few months so as not to overload twitch servers.

WarZ and League are not good showcases for 1080p 60fps, but yes, Twitch is very forgiving when it comes to streaming ridiculous quality/framerates.

Not to toot my own horn, but I've recently started 1080p 30fps. Here are some test broadcasts I did with a few games: BF4 & Dark Souls, Geometry Wars, Chivalry, and Tribes:Ascend. Bitrate still way too high for most (6mbps w/ BF4, 8mbps w/ the others) though. I recommend you watch on a desktop, using Chrome.

Twitch is not even remotely capable of delivering that kind of quality at a stable quality. Framedrops all over the place and there's not anything high traffic going on at the site (LoL / Dota 2 tournaments)

It depends on where you live. I live in the west coast USA and don't have trouble with twitch streams unless there's a big LoL stream going on.

But you're maybe on to something. Maybe the PS4 stream settings are the way they are for those users that live in areas with consistently spotty twitch.tv performance.

Is it possible to stream with 5 up? It is the highest available where I live and really want to take advantage of this feature.

Since it's an archived broadcast, wait and let it buffer first. If you're still getting framedrops, stuttering, etc... then it's probably the device you're watching on that is the issue.

That being said, Twitch's servers are currently undergoing maintenance in some capacity. Service isn't the best ATM.

5mbps up is plenty enough to stream, especially on PS4 with the Best preset(540p,30fps, max observed bitrate of 1mbps+). Go for it!

It's certainly possible PS4 is capable of adjusting bitrates based on local bandwidth, but imbearygood had 30mbps up and yet his stream was limited to less than 2mbps. Hopefully we'll see the feature mature to better take advantage of resources available, but right now quality will be lacking in most cases, regardless of local network performance.

I'm talking from the viewer side. In the past viewers from the east coast and from Europe have sometimes complained about video stuttering.

Twitch.tv owns all their own data centers to reduce costs but this also means they sometimes don't have the resources to supply a consistent quality experience to all viewers when load is high. This is probably why PS4 encoding settings are so low; to account for twitch.tv data center limitations.

Unless Twitch is doing something specific for PS4 and/or Xbone streams and haven't made it public, what you see on every channel on the website and on Source with partnered streams is exactly what is coming out of whatever machine is uploading the stream. On mobile, you're limited to High, Medium, Low presets and Source is not an option.

And all transcoding requires dedicated hardware, so what you're suggesting would be very costly for Twitch to implement for every console stream. As of now, transcoding is specific to partnered streams and streams available on mobile and other devices.

I think some wires have been crossed. I'm not suggesting transcoding. I edited my post to make my point clearer.

Oh, so what you're suggesting is they've limited the presets/bitrates on PS4 based on the most commonly available downstream rates for each region?

EDIT: Saw your edit. Yes, I wouldn't rule out that possibility.

Not because of people's downstream rates, but because of twitch.tv's spotty server performance in some regions. Google for twitch.tv suttering.

To add to your point, they may be limiting these machines simply because of how common they'll be and how convenient it is to stream. If you lower streaming requirements to "Own an PS4 or Xbox One" then ideally you should prepare for each one of those machines to stream at some point. Perhaps not concurrently or regularly, but you don't want everyone that can stream 540p at 5mbps to always stream at 5mbps, just because they can.

Why would anyone stream 540p at 5Mbps? At that bitrate you'd want to stream at 1080p.

I hope in the future we see the maximum quality setting raised to 720p/30fps at a little over 2Mbps. The current settings are way too low.

It was an extreme example to illustrate my point that they don't want people streaming at bitrates far beyond what's necessary. And yes, 720p/30fps at a reasonable bitrate is entirely possible given the quality of 540p at ~1mbps. Up to Sony/Twitch to allow it, unfortunately.

Does anyone know yet if live streaming will also stream your music unlimited soundtrack in the background? Or does that get cut out?

Hey guys, thanks for watching my streams, I'll be streaming pretty much all night. If you have suggestions / games you want me to play let me know.

I have:
Knack
Killzone
Resogun
Contrast
Super Motherload

I can get the F2P games also.

If you missed the streams they should be up on my youtube channel soon.

Since you're taking requests, wanna flip through the UI and games and do a little tour? If you've been asked/have done it 87 times today I apologize. :P

Can you try streaming with a music unlimited soundtrack? I'm interested in knowing if it gets edited out. Thanks!

Can you disable the fucking chat on the right?
Play whatever you want. The msic is so good. Thank you for sharing.

Jed just said he's been using the controller for 10-12 hours. Polygooooooooon.

He also just started playing Resogun.

Is there a Twitch viewing app on the PS4, and if not, is one coming at some point? I use the one on my 360 all the time to watch StarCraft streams.

Sort of. You can watch people playing on PS4, but it doesn't look like it picks up any other streams.

knack looks like a hard game, I might buy this after all..

Yeah the people streaming it seem to really like it, too. Said it's fun to play, and that the 'graphics are incredible.'

I feel like $60 is still too much for me, but I'd love to play Knack when its on sale or on PS+

Have been thinking this as pointless from the beginning, i don't usually watch videos, but i'm watching Shoemaker and his hot GF co-op Knack now to see if its a game i should pick up.
Its oddly compelling.

Fighting game fans and Dota fans could have told you from the start that watching Streams is indeed oddly compelling. I really enjoy watching streams of skill-based games I got into, like Binding of Isaac.

is twitch archiving any of the ps4 streams? i've looked for archives on some of the channels that streamed and found none.
