Twitter says Super Mario Bros movie is mediocre, boring, uncreative - the Live action movie was better

People with ideological bents (losers on twitter, loser reviewers on twitter) will hate this movie for various reasons that have little to do with the movie. Chris Pratt went to church so he is a Transphobe. He hunts so he must be a conservative. He has failed all of these stringent infallible purity tests. Whenever the audience score is almost double the critic score something else is at play and for the last 6-8 years it is usually ideological. At least when the audience score is higher we don't have to listen to a bunch of crying about review bombing. It is only OK when "professionals" do it. The movie could be shit but who knows. I don't trust people here to be honest about video game related adaptations. The Last of Us was mid AF but is praised to heaven here.

I can see why some hate it. It's a mass market Illumination film. it's a fun, that's the best I can say about it. I don't think I'll ever watch it again.
I wish they went with a different studio. Take more inspiration from paper mario in the story department.

Had a great time w my daughter. It was story-shallow, sure but it doesnt try to be anything but a pure Mario movie. I thought it was a great introduction, hopefully we get sequels. Daughter loved it, she got a lot of references since we play so many Mario games.

Also got my preorder -power up popcorn tin - from AMC. It was fun watching the other kids eyeball and ogle at my daughters tin as we walked out (they sold out like first day).

tracking to beat Frozen 2 WW for opening start

It's at 387 now, which also tracks higher than Endgame

Just finished watching it with the family. We loved it.

Not sure what people want from a kids film, it ticked all the boxes as far as I’m concerned.

But to be fair, the Endgame and Frozen 2 numbers are from a shorter period, no?

Correct, which isn't to take anything away from what Super Mario Bros is doing. But I'll be shocked if it dethrones Frozen 2, which is at 1.45 billion.

For reference:
  • Avatar: The Way of Water's 5-day WW Box Office take was 441.7 million (and that was hampered by The World Cup finale).

It's at 387 now, which also tracks higher than Endgame

Where are you getting 387 from?

Deadline's Sunday update is saying 377+?

https://deadline.com/2023/04/box-office-super-mario-bros-movie-air-amazon-ben-affleck-1235318951/

Among Easter weekend openings, Super Mario Bros ranks third behind 2016’s Batman vs. Superman ($181M) and 2015’s Furious 7‘s $161M. If overseas is still at $173M by tomorrow AM, then the new global opening record for an animated movie set by Super Mario Bros stands at $377.2M.

I wonder if the performance will result in higher sales for Mario Kart, Odyssey and Switch. Much like TLOU, Witcher, and Cyberpunk.

I dunno if Nintendo is advertising these games during this period.

My son was never into Mario he's more of a ipad gamer (Roblox, Minecraft and some drifting game). After the movie all he wants to play is Super Mario 3d World and Mario Kart 8 for the past 3 days on my Wii U. He hasn't touched his iPad since. I wouldn't be surprised if the movie will also have the same effect and influence people to buy and play Mario games. I may have to buy my son a Switch which he never cared for either. Damn you Nintendo 😆

In France before the movie there was a gigantic ad featuring Mario games on the Switch.

I just got out. I enjoyed it well enough. If I have a complaint, it's that the pacing is fucked. They throw so much shit at you that all the nostalgia bombs and eater eggs have no time to register. Especially for the music cues. I think at one point they go through something like 15 classic Mario songs in under 2 minutes.

Still it's fun. Voice cast is mostly good, including Pratt. They really should have gotten Larry David for Cranky Kong, instead of Fred Armisen doing his best Larry David impression.

Of course. The Mario and Luigi games were also great storywise (for those who say Mario can't have a good story). I would love a Mario movie along those lines. I've no idea why this mediocre "child" movie (that a lot of people here are excited to watch) gets so ardently defended here.
Super Mario movie number wan.

I hope you're reading this in your basement and raging at this post.

I legitimately don't get it. What do people want from this? It's mario. Sure, most of us are adults and grew up on mario, but its always been a franchise marketed to kids. And even STILL, I viewed this as a fully fleshed out story. We have a whole backstory for mario and luigi. We meet their family. We have a strained relationship with his father and the disrespect of his peers that provide motivation for him to develop as a character and earn their admiration. We learn about the mushroom kingdom, how to get there, and the surrounding lands and their relationships(or lack thereof) with one another. None of this stuff even had to be explained to the extent they did because it's fricking mario, a cartoon italian man who jumps on turtles....but they cared enough about this movie and the franchise to give it a shot. And we have arguably the best, most faithful version of Bowser that does justice to the development of the character as he was in Paper Mario. Sorry I seem to frustrated but I just don't know what some of you expected or wanted from this movie.

This movie reminds me of TMNT2: Secret of the Ooze. Yes, it's a fun + popular movie for kids, and I can look back fondly on memories of watching it as a child, but as an adult I can acknowledge that it has major issues and is just mediocre overall.

Having said that: Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, and Jack Black knocked it out of the park with their VO. Anya Joy just sounded like she was playing herself, though.

Also, Seth Rogen as DK was just wrong.

5/10

Some of the criticism leveled at this movie is the lack of story and rapid pace, I get. But other critics and reviewers want the Mario movie to stand and represent something, they want this movie to send some message, either subtly or overtly. Take that for whatever you want.

I interpret that is that it wants the Mario movie to display some political or social issue message. Like that Baymax film that was a huge hit with critics because it shows support for the LGBT community, especially the Trans community, there's a scene in that movie where a Trans man is looking for tampons in a store for his menstruation. They say the Mario film plays it safe and doesn't support any type of message.

What reviews are saying it’s bad because there’s no politics??

More like they hate Bowser toxic masculinity, woman cliche dating a man.

In other words, they want a kid movie to be an adult movie. This is self reflect to generation Z behavior 'everything need to be about me'.

Twitter should burn to the ground and rot in hell. If here is no hell, it’s high time one was made for Twitter. Imagine seriously arguing that the live action SMB is better than this. I wouldn’t believe these people if they told me I need oxygen to live. That’s how much one ruins their credibility by arguing something so utterly idiotic.

On the other hand, someone on Twitter created these which swaps the 80s songs with their original scores:

And it's really great, watch before they poof.
