Twitter says Super Mario Bros movie is mediocre, boring, uncreative - the Live action movie was better

So has anyone here actually gone to see it yet? Spoiler clips are already hitting youtube and I'm not gonna get a chance to see this until the weekend (and I'm weak to spoilers so...).

Just saw it. The movie sucks fucking ass... if you are not a 5 year old. It shouldn't even be called a movie IMHO. It's a completely soulless marketing product, that only serves the prupose of explaining what a "Mario/Lugi", an "Item Box", "Items", "other Nintendo Characters", "Mario Kart" and a "Nintendo Theme Park" is to 5-year-olds. The pacing is so bad, it's crazy. For example, Peach as a character, her motivation, her problems and her solution to them, are literally introduced within 20 seconds. And shit like that happens all the time throughout the entire movie. New places, new charactes, new situations are so ridiculously quickly introduced, without any sense of character, world or story building, that it felt like my short-term-memory had frequent black-outs. This bizzare fragmented pacing style was probably chosen because 5 year olds are not able to follow any kind of remotely complex story for more than 10 seconds.

It's a 3/10 movie if you are over 5 years old.
It's a 7 or 8/10 movie if you are exactly 5 years old.

Nah, movies fine. Solid 7/10 film for anyone whose heart isn't made of ice.

Going to see this one. I don't have high expectations, and I'm fairly easy to please.
For reference, I'm one of the seemingly few who likes the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie, flaws and all. Also for reference, I watched both Sonic the Hedgehog movies and ended up liking both.

Got done watching it.

It isn’t going to win awards for being a deep story. It did what it set out to do, be a fun and entertaining movie for any age.

Also, it was better than Sonic and certainly better than Sonic 2.

Also, scoring average on Rotten is fucking brain dead. Critics obviously are out of touch these days.

Bonus points, my boys loved It.

LONG time nintendo fan here. Absolutely LOVED this movie. Family loved it too.

Typical internet nonsense. This movie is fantastic and is everything you want from a Mario movie. If you think the story is going to be deep or they’re going to try and recreate the wheel - that’s on you.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
I have just come back from seeing it a few hours ago.

First of all, I was the only person there. No joke, there was nobody else. That shocked me a little. Because the movie is very well promoted. There are commercials. And it is a big theater, and there were ads and wallpapers everywhere about the movie.

Ok, so.. it's a good movie. It's not deep and it doesnt take itself seriously at all, but it's fun to watch. It's good to take the kids to see. It's a little bent to the young side. With Pixar movies they usually throw a little bone for the parents. This film has less of that.

I will say though, it's better than other Illumination films. It ain't perfect, but it's my favorite from them at this point..

I guess the movie is supposed to mark the first occurrence of a Super Star in the Mario mythos.

I liked the movie, it plays off all the elements from the Mario games and is a treat for anyone that played them.

Mario's father is a jackass.

The movie also carries over the antagonistic relationship between Mario and Donkey Kong.

I guess it is canon now that Donkey Kong is from the same dimension as the Mushroom Kingdom. They seemed to be going that way with New Donk City in Mario Odyssey.

I guess Cranky Kong is not seen as the original Donkey Kong anymore. They kind of muddied the waters there.

Also, Princess Peach whips out her
Ice Flower.

I would love to see Jack Black's version of Bowser in a Mario game.
His singing was perfect for the character.

I thought it was canon that old donkey kong became cranky kong and the new donkey kong was like the jr.?

I don’t see how this would go in the face of that.

In the video games, Cranky Kong was Donkey Kong in the Donkey Kong arcade game. That used to be the first time Mario met Donkey Kong.

Now, they changed it with the movie. Mario first meets the next generation Donkey Kong.

Also, that antique store with the pixelated items from previous games was suspicious. It implies that it is not the first iteration of the mushroom kingdom. Maybe there have been other Marios, Luigis, Peaches, and Bowsers?

My kid loved the movie. I was mostly bored. I understand that it is simply going to be shoutouts to most of the major Mario titles, but it felt like there could have been a decent story when there wasn't one. And there are some really weird things in the movie that went nowhere.

Pretty though. It would be pretty dope if Nintendo could pull off visuals like this in a game.

Also, what's up with the utterly morbid Luma? Kinda dark for a kids videogame movie...

Isn’t that Jumpman and not Mario until later?

Had a super good time watching this just now.
I honestly can’t even take the “its a kid movies” folks serious. This was a 35+ years-in-the-making montage of Easter eggs, references, and deep cuts with very passionate oversight and care to the highest degree that naturally longtime fans are going to gravitate to. I’m more annoyed at parents of infants that find keeping a stroller in a theatre aisle acceptable.

Otherwise on a critical level at most the pacing felt rushed, but overall the tone, characterization, settings etc all top notch and I even wanna shout out Chris Pratt in particular for delivering a solid Mario. This is going to be an audience hit.

This is a great movie if you are a Mario fan (which I am). It's truly a love letter to the games, and there tons of Easter eggs and nice nods to other games as well.

Visually it's one of the finest CG animated films I have ever seen. Top notch.

It is also a completely wholesome family friendly movie. Some might find the humor regarding death a bit odd, but as a homage to a video game series it feels completely in line.

I don't think I have seen anything that stays so close to the source material (video game wise) from Hollywood.

But that is a double edged sword in a ways, because the star power in the film doesn't always get to shine in the way you would hope.

It's obvious they weren't given much wiggle room, so they don't get to do things much beyond what you would expect from the characters.

But they do all... Totally encapsulate the characters and almost never fell at odds with them. Jack Black is a riot as Bowser, Charlie Day and Keegan utterly nail their portrayal of Luigi and Toad.

Pratt is a solid everyman's Mario, I really can't think anyone could have done a better job considering the likely heavy handed nature of Miyamoto and Nintendo.

I feel like DK could've been done better, but I think the story kinda put his character in a corner.

Don't understand the negativity towards Peach being capable. She doesn't do anything in this movie beyond what she has done in the games.

It's a solid 7 or 8 if you are a Mario fan, and probably a 5 or a 6 if you are not. There is almost no innuendo, and it's clearly directed as being a wholesome movie.

Sonic 1&2 seemed to take some risks and is generally funnier, but there are parts that feel out of place. This takes almost no risks, but feels entirely faithful.

Movie was great! Everyone in my family loved it and every showing in the local massive theater was sold out. That’s 42 shows in a day.

My nephew who's almost 3, and always runs out of the cinema when the movie starts, set thru the entire movie and loved it.
Same with my niece who found some parts scary.

Movie critics should go with kids and see how the experience a movie.

It's a fun movie, filled with easter eggs. It is a bit of a shame they used 80s songs that don't make sense, hopefully they can give us a director's cut when they cut that out and replace it with longer Mario music.

Can someone tell me whether there's musical numbers in it or not? I absolutely despise musicals, so when I saw that there's musical numbers a while back it gave me a bad taste in my mouth, but I can't find solid information on whether they're in there or not.

Everyone has different tolerance levels for cringe, but I absolutely cannot handle musicals, so I kind of need to know lol. Will take my daughter regardless, but I need to know what I'm in for.

No musical numbers, Just Boweser's doing 2 lines of a piano song.

The Jack Black version of Bowser is great. He takes the silliness of Bowser to the next level.
He and Charlie Day knocked it out of the park. Even though I don’t like Seth Rogan much, when Donkey Kong did his signature stoner chuckle a couple times, it kinda got me.

Bowser was easily my favorite part of the movie though.

So I saw it, I enjoyed it quite a bit. I think Jack Black was the stand out performance to be honest, Pratt was not at all as bad as everyone was assuming, he wasn't worse than anyone else and I think he did a good job. I can kinda agree that the pacing was way too fast going but otherwise solid. Any person with a hint of nostalgia for the games will enjoy it and I think the audience score shows that.

Just saw it. Thought it was excellent and all the cast were perfectly chosen. It looks stunning and the music was great too. I also enjoyed the 80s music. Laughed out loud a few times and enjoyed spotting the little references in the backgrounds of scenes. Jack Black was inspired casting and I was quite surprised how much of him was in the character.

Now that I think about it the pacing was way too fast. I would have liked some longer slower elements for some touching and beautiful moments. We did get a couple of short scenes but they were mostly just them or us looking at beautiful scenery.

6/10 - Jack Black and Charlie Day were the best part of it, other than that, as already mentioned, it felt like a very safe very basic 90 minute advert for Mario games, like they packed in soo many references to the main games they might as well had have Mario turn around and say "And you-a too can join-a in on the fun with a Nintendo Switch".
