Twitter Thinks That Laura Ingraham Made a Nazi Salute During the RNC

Lol.

When I look at that gif, there's two ways I can interpret it...

  • "okay now wave to the crowd...wait wtf am I doing holy shit this looks bad, change position now...okay wave and act like nothing happened"
  • "now a quick sieg heil hehe not too long though don't want it to be too obvious, just for the in crowd, alright now some normal waving"

My instincts tell me it's the first one, because honestly, why... In 99% of the cases when some public figure seems to do the sieg heil, it's just a fraction of a second holding your arm out causing bad optics on pictures. But in this case, I'm just not sure. There are some truly fucked up people in this world, and if there's one place where goddamn neonazi's would get a podium, it would be this years republican national convention.

I should look into this woman's background before making my mind up.

It seemed more instinctive to me than a deliberate salute, which only makes it worse. That's not a good instinct to have.

I remember that. That woman was born in Germany in the 40's and moved to the US later. She was mocking a few protesters who she said was rude to her and her husband, because they were holding a sign that compared Hitler to Trump - and she was angry because she didn't think the comparison was fair, and that they didn't understand exactly what Hitler was really about. She has a point there, Trump might have a streak of fascism in his rhetoric and is clearly racist, but he's no Hitler.

I'm suspicious of anyone willing to support Trump after what he's said publicly, but in this case a flustered little old lady made a poor decision and someone happened to snap a photo at the perfect moment.

It is true, he is no Hitler, not actually, but I watched last week a great movie and I thought the message it gave was chillingly true.

"You want him."

Highly recommended to watch.

Honestly, watching her live she was doing a good job and making a good speech and really hyping the convention (compared to most the other speakers).

... and then she did that and INSTANTLY I cringed and knew she messed up whether she did it intentionally or not. The GIF makes it look worse and that image... dear GOD.

Lol cmon y'all.

This is at the level of "white staircase" tier controversies.

The RNC is so fucked there's no need to reach for conspiratorial shit that clearly isn't true - this is what the far right does with secret Muslim handshakes and shit.

Strikes me as something probably over-rehearsed. Like someone has told her ok now at the end you have to wave, you wanna start from the left and then slowly rotate around.

She had the ins and outs of the movement itself so precise in her head she forgot to actually wave lol.

She wanted to do some practiced wave to the crowd, messed it up, then realized it looked like a nazi salute and improvised her way out of it.

White elevator.

And you know, it might be a little different if we weren't talking about a candidate who really does have a big white nationalist/neo-Nazi following, one he's done little to discourage. It's not like all of this is springing up out of the blue.

Like the white elevator thing you reference, it's mostly worth mentioning because it's part of a larger pattern.

Yep. This is just as bad as republicans trying to prove that Obama is a muslim or not born on Hawaii.

That's clearly not a nazi salute? You're reaching.

Did you see the video? It's very obviously intentional.

Yeah it definitely looks intentional, but I can't image a person being that mind bogglingly stupid to actually willingly sneak in a Nazi salute at such an event. It doesn't make sense. There is nothing to gain even if she were an actual neo nazi, and everything to lose.

Then again, maybe I'm overestimating people.

I see Trump so this Nazi-salute-transition-into-wave thing all the time. Not surprising it would start getting picked up by the rest of the party.

it seemed to be very calculated, it was done in a way that you could tell what it was, but short enough to be able to deny.

Why would she perform a Nazi salute?
to show untiy towards fellow Trump supporters, aka white supremacists.

Controversy. Or perhaps since she's Laura Ingraham, it just happened to be on her mind at that moment, and oops! (and who waves like that, even awkwardly?)

Speakers at the RNC who were cobbled together at the last minute because party regulars and former presidents want no part of this shitshow.

Wow, just.... Wow. And people deny this was a Nazi salute?

I don't deny it was stupid, whatever the wave was; but there are so many more statements made by the Trump campaign with so much more substance that prove he and his cronies are racists. A "nazi salute," made by a low end speaker at the RNC is on the same level as the, "Muslim handshake," controversy that has happened at least a dozen times since Obama was the 2008 Democratic nominee.

I mean, there's no such thing as a muslim handshake for one. So no, this is not "on the same level".

People are either incredible naive or whitewashing it. She does the face before the salute, she knew exactly what she was doing. Gotta love people saying it is cringy and stupid, like it's no big deal really, just a friendly nazi salute tehe, a little faux pas really. Makes me wanna puke.

It was probably muscle memory from all the fun they have at their private tables.

The face and reaction tell me that she instantly noticed that she fucked up and tried to save it.

Yes it is. It totally is.

People are looking for a reason to point out how fascist Trump and his supporters are. My point is that whether it was a Nazi salute or not, there are so many others things said by the Trump campaign that point to fascist and white supremacist ties with a lot more credibility than an ambiguous wave to the crowd made by a speaker who is crazy as all hell and likely not media trained.

She purses her lips as soon as her hand starts to rise, holds that expression straight through until she releases the salute and starts waving. I don't know how people think it wasn't on purpose.

Hm, so you think she purposefully Nazi saluted?

We should get a poll going! I'm curious to see if people agree or not.

Probably because it's real easy to accidentally Nazi salute

No, something a lot of people noticed and which, as you pointed out, wouldn't even be out of place is not the same as something Rush Limbaugh dreamed up in islamophobic rage.

I've seen Nazi demonstrations where the salutes were more ambiguous (probably because they're illegal). She all but posed for a photo.

It is easy to do the salute by mistake when engaging with a crowd
But I wouldn't give her the benefit of a doubt given how much hateful shit they spew at the RNC

I didn't believe the headline until I saw that gif lol. That's not how you wave at people unless you actually forget you're not at a white power rally.
