What I think will happen: Only one model. Out by march. Slightly redesigned with retina and A6. Oh and obviously its going to have Siri.

lol @ DigiTimes
.
All I want is Retina iPad.

The rest is gravy.

Well, for one, Apple rumors coming out of Taiwan have been notoriously off the mark. Secondly, Apple won't fracture the iPad market (you heard right) by introducing a "fighter" model against Android tablets. To put it simply, there really isn't a market for tablets outside of the iPad, period.

Fighter-versions of the iPhone would've been more believable.
Apple is currently using the 3GS as a 'fighter model'.

following Apple's history, wouldn't it be announced in Jan and available March/April?

regardless, i'm likely to give my mother my current iPad 2 once the newer version is released. she loves playing sudoku on the device whenever i stop by, and the constant reading i do in iBooks and Kindle would benefit from the higher res.

No, it would be announced in February or March, roughly two weeks before launch. Two weeks before launch is standard operating procedure.

It's all been said, but macrumors.com responded.

Mid-Range and High-End iPad 3 Launching at iWorld Seems Unlikely

There have been an increasing number of rumors about the next generation iPad which is expected to launch sometime in early 2012. Digitimes is the source for many of these reports, but some of the claims are becoming increasingly questionable.

The latest report from the publication now claims that Apple will unveil its next generation iPad at the Macworld|iWorld conference on January 26th, 2012.

Aside from a surprise Apple return to Macworld|iWorld, Digitimes also reports that the new iPads will keep 9.7" screens, carry 1536x2048 Retina Displays, A6 processors, 5-megapixel and 8-megapixel cameras, and over double the battery capacity (6500mAH -> 14,000mAH) for the higher end model.

The two new models are described as targetting the mid-range and high-end segments.

Digitimes has a bit of mixed record on Apple rumors with our internal tracking putting their accuracy at 55%. Examining the rumor more closely, this isn't the first time that a high end or "HD" iPad has been suggested. ThisIsMyNext suggested this possibility back in July. At the time, this "iPad HD" was described as a "pro" device aimed at video and photo professionals. While Apple is widely expected to introduce an Retina-display iPad at some point in 2012, the most recent prevailing rumors have not been suggesting that Apple would split the iPad line into mid and high range models.

High end iPad questions aside, the other even harder-to-believe claim from Digitimes is the launch of any new device at the Macworld|iWorld conference. Apple officially withdrew from Macworld in December 2008, and Apple's last official presence at the show was in January 2009. Apple had said at the time that trade shows were becoming a very minor part of Apple's overall strategy. They company has been able to successfully launch products on their own timetable by simply holding their own media events with a single week's notice.

Macworld has continued on with Apple's absence, but with a smaller presence than before. This year, the conference was rebranded

And I just bought a rather cheap refurb'd iPad 2!

Oh well I only really want it for videos/browsing when not at my PC

i just bought an ipad 2 2 months ago =(

ah well, the ipad 1 is still looking really good almost 2 year later.

Thought this would be about a Kindle Fire killer. They instead go the opposite route which i respect more. Maybe Ipad 2 will be 300 or something.

What jokes, it's true :(

I'm unsure if I'll upgrade to the next gen iPad or not. I had an iPad 1 16 gig and then grabbed an iPad 2 32 gig at release. I haven't found myself itching for more processor power, more battery life, or better resolution yet. Yeah, the camera sucks, but I use my cell for taking pics of random shit, and Facetime resolution is fine when I use it.

We shall see, Apple...

I'm ready. I'm ready to upgrade this iPhone 4 to the newer one in 2012 and to finally get an iPad. Which I always wanted since the original.

I hope it's true. The iPad's display has been its weakpoint so far imo. People might disagree with me, but after getting used to fantastic smartphone displays, the low-res of the iPad feels like a giant step back. I can see the pixels all over the place! I can't stand that.

(Yes, I know, compared to PC monitors the iPads resolution isn't bad. But you are not holding a monitor close to your eyes...)

Completely agree. Text is always blurry/jaggy and that why reading isn't really fun. It could be so much better. I always shake my head when people say "but it's fine! I don't care!". No, it's not fine and once it's out, it will blow peoples mind.

This is good news for the parents of all the kids who are still pissed they didnt get an Apple product for Xmas. Makeup Xmas is on the way kids.

Even if it doesn't have a resolution bump (i hope it does though), I'm getting an iPad 3 at launch. Going 1 to 3 is going to be sweet. I'll be going 3GS with a busted ass screen to the iPhone 5 as well in 2012.

5-megapixel and 8-megapixel cameras, and over double the battery capacity (6500mAH -> 14,000mAH) for the higher end model.
How the hell are they going to double the battery capacity and include those kind of sensors without making the device thicker. Unless the battery is specially designed to conform to very piece of free space in the back of the thing and the 8mp sensor is not the sexy 4S one both of these predictions have got to be bullshit.

I hope Apple releases the iPhone 5 this summer. I like the summer launches better. That and I'm really getting tired of the CPU bottleneck on my iPhone 4, but don't want to get stuck with a 4S come the awesome iPhone 5.

FWIW the iPad 3 is rumored to be thicker

Apple updates their hardware every 2 years, so I don't think they would release A5 in 2011 and A6 in 2012, unless the report is misreporting and it's actually the same chip in quad version to support the resolution increase.
You're talking about CPU and GPU cores right? They follow a tick-tock pattern like Intel because it's pretty tough (and expensive) to provide a complete CPU and GPU upgrade every year. You're also waiting on ARM to push out new designs. The smaller refreshes do usually bring higher clock speeds, more L2 cache, increased memory bandwidth, lower power consumption, etc.

iPhone 2G & 3G: ARM11 + MBX-Lite
iPhone 3GS & 4: Cortex A8 + SGX 535
4S: dual core Cortex A9 + SGX 543MP2

The A6 will almost certainly debut in 2012 but it probably won't have the Cortex A15 as ARM just recently finished it and pushed it out to manufacturers. A15 chips won't be here till late 2012.

I'd expect a quad core A9 in the iPad 3. They might just call it a "quad core A5" and then debut the Apple A6 and its Cortex A15 core with the LTE iPhone in Fall 2012. *lots of salt*

When the iPad 3 drops, you really might as well start waiting for the iPad 4.

I know what you mean, but I disagree.

Take the iphone 4 for example. It was such a massive jump over the 3GS that it was worth getting (if you're into iphones that is) without thinking about the iphone 5.

Then you get the 4S which is just a marginal upgrade on the 4, so if you already have a 4 is probably better to wait for the 5. If you don't you have to ask yourself when the 5 is coming to see whether it's worth it or not.

Same with the iPad. iPad 2 was a marginal upgrade on the original. If the iPad 3 really comes with a retina display then it would seem to be worth waiting till that one comes out, since it'll be a significant improvement. Then the 4 will probably be a marginal improvement too, so no need to wait.

Yeah, just upgraded from a 3GS to a 4S, and if that's the sort of jump between the next iPad then it'll be pretty huge.

Reading is fun on an iPad as is, and the new display will blow people's minds.

Just because it can be better doesn't mean it's shit now.

Yes. This is my analysis on Apple yearly changes too.

Your iPad will be 5 months old by the time the new one comes out. Relax.

5 month old garbage!

I've been thinking of selling my OG iPad, then buying a cheap iPad 2 when the new model is refreshed. Unless the new one is so crazy I have to get it...

I just did that recently myself. The first ipad still gets over $300 on ebay, and apple sells 32GB ipad 2 refurbs for $500 on their site.

The ipad 3 is still months away, the ipad 2 will have a good resale value, and I probably won't jump day one anyways.

The only thing I would want is the 8 mp camera. The ipad 2's movie quality is awesome, but the camera quality is laughably bad.

Learning curve is done and you can type like mad. Especially for the amount of typing net browsing/forum posts require. I'm well past the point of bad tab typing.

I type 110+ WPM on a keyboard and even if I get up to 40-50 WPM on iPad, it feels horrendously slow and cumbersome to do anything. I stopped using iPad after a few days.

Hey my mom just bought me an ipad 2 for Christmas (32 gig 3g w/ Verizon).

I only have 10 more days to decide on a return. What do you guys think?

Is there a chance something new hits in a few weeks?

Well they'll definitely have 2 models available in the market come the iPad 3's release, though I suspect the secondary model will just be the current iPad 2. Despite massive investment in their supply chain, there's no way those panels won't be supply constrained initially, so Apple need something else to sell alongside it.

I'm not sure of quad A9s are really necessary or all that useful. Its possible given the shrink to 32nm but personally, I feel a slight clock speed bump would be more than sufficient. The real increase in CPU performance will come with an A15 based idevice and we're not getting one of those next year.

Its the graphics hardware where Apple should (and I believe will) be investing. Add another couple of SGX543 cores, bump up the clockspeed to ~300mhz+ and they'll be able to get almost the same performance at 2048x1536 as they get today at 1024x768. Personally I'd like to see that level of hardware have a go at 1024x768 games with 4xmsaa pixel doubled to 2048x1536 (with 2D HUD elements rendered at native resolution, naturally). Should look great and allow games with roughly the same complexity as PS Vita titles.

There's been a lot of smoke about the high DPI iPad display for a while now, and usually when there's that much smoke around an Apple rumor it's eventually proven true.

That said, I'll believe it when it's announced and not a moment sooner.
