Two iPad models to release in 2012

I am primed and ready to get an iPad. My buddy just got one and I played with it for a good while. It still feels incomplete, but its getting pretty close to my standards so I think I'm just gonna jump in.

It's nice that Apple is trying to stay on top of the tablet game, at least. You see where not having a low end and a tippy-top high end offering has done to their smartphone marketshare

i'm hoping they keep the industrial design and everyone flips out that this isn't a 'real' upgrade.

Incomplete? What's missing?

I don't know, the way a lot of stuff like was handled like the tiny notification center tab and the janky multitasking gestures just don't feel fully baked yet. Pulling up or swiping with 4 fingers was no where near as responsive as my 4S. I know its a nebulous statement, but iOS on the iPad definitely does not feel "done" to me. It has a little too much iPhone in it still.

I can't really articulate exactly what I expect down the road, because if I could I would be working on UI at Apple. They forked iOS. Obviously its not something as drastic as the kindlefire version of android, but there are still two version of iOS, and the version of iOS on the iPad definitely still feels too similar to the version on the iPhone. There are a lot of subtle tweaks facilitated by the larger screen and I expect even more differentiation down the line in os 6 and 7. Its a come a long LOOONG way since the version of os3 that it released with, but it hasn't come far enough IMO.

There's been a lot of smoke about the high DPI iPad display for a while now, and usually when there's that much smoke around an Apple rumor it's eventually proven true.

That said, I'll believe it when it's announced and not a moment sooner.

This is how digitimes rolls. They wrap the plausible, probably true rumor(retina display), around the utter bullshit(launching at iWorld), and then pretend they got it half right.

So it doesn't feel like a tablet OS to you? If that's the case, then I probably get where you're coming from, but what the iPad really makes it feel like a tablet for me are the apps. Apps like Flipboard come up with their own interface, use the space appropriately and don't feel like they really have a place on a phone (I know it's now an universal app, but I never used the new iPhone version and guess it would be different). Can't say much about multitasking, because I have an OG iPad and it sucks at that (not enough RAM). I sure would love a new and better interface (kinda like the Windows 8 one, surprising no one), but right now it's good enough for me to hide iOS behind the real tablet apps, which probably just proves your point.

my crackpot theory I've been peddling forever is mission control coming to the iPad.

I find typing to be very pleasant on iPad. Not sure what the experience is on the other guys.

Two models with the difference being only a 3 megapixel difference in camera? I say the iPad 3 will only ship in one version (world tablet, 8 megapixel camera, a6, retina). They keep the iPad 2 around and drop the price.

Retina will look incredible, although I'm very satisfied with the 2. I'll likely upgrade when the 4 releases.

Remember when they said iPad 3 to release in 2011?

Retina Display is highly likely but an 8 megapixel camera isn't, the iPad is just too thin to fit such a camera. The A6 is a must, the A5 won't be able to push the number of pixels a Retina Display iPad will have.

A4 was 3GS level hardware.

Except the CPU was 200MHz faster in the iPhone 4S and 400MHz faster in the iPad, and the GPU was about 50% faster.

If the current rumor of the iPad 3 being thicker is true, then an 8 megapixel camera being in there wouldn't be too far fetched.

Why would it be thicker?

Even the Retina Display that the iPad 3 might get won't be 4x the pixels. 2x is the most you can hope for, something like 1280x960 is possible.

Wonder how much I can get for my iPad 2 when the new one comes out. I plan on upgrading.

Give it away to a family member, that's what I do whenever upgrading.

I type 110+ WPM on a keyboard and even if I get up to 40-50 WPM on iPad, it feels horrendously slow and cumbersome to do anything. I stopped using iPad after a few days.

I never need to type 110 WPM on a tablet. If I ever did I'd pair my BT keyboard to it.

Like I said, for browsing/forum posting and all the casual usage, typing on a touch screen is excellent.

If you stopped using an iPad for that, you should have saved your money. :lol

I bought my wife an iPad 2 when they were more readily available last May, don't need to jump on a new version so soon.

That said...most likely I'll upgrade my iPhone 4 to a 5 this year whenever it's announced...and what I'm really waiting is for Apple to announce an all-new MacBook Pro (13") in an Air-inspired form factor.

Zero. A few months, yes.

So should I just keep it I guess?

I could ask her to return it while I wait for a March release and I have a $99 Touchpad that I barely use to hold me over.

That said, it would be nice to return to college with a cool, new iPad 2 that I'll probably get some good use of.

How much better is the screen supposed to be in the new one. And actually, I have until Monday to decide whether to return it since I'm leaving for my college town soon.

I would hate to open it up this week and have my mom find out a new one is coming out really soon.

I'll be getting an iPad this year, so cool. Thinking about it, in the future, I'll keep my mobile/handheld devices Apple and stick with PC's for my desktops.

I think it would be thicker to house a larger battery to accommodate a retina screen among other things.

I need Apple to announce the next iPad soon. I've been wanting an iPad since the first one, but waited for the 2 since I thought it would be a major improvement. That never happened so I went for the long haul and decided to wait for the third version. Just like I skipped the slightly improved 3GS and was awarded with the almost perfect 4, I expect the iPad 3 to be a big leap over the 2. Even if it isn't I'll be buying it day one, I've been waiting way too long for one.

I have my 30th birthday coming up in a few weeks, and I'm likely to hold off for an iPad 3 as my gift - however my wife and family are wanting to get me vouchers on my birthday to put towards one. Would amazon have these for release on day 1 or is it more likely to be better going with Argos etc for stock ( UK ) ? Because I can't see for the life of me Apple selling gift cards for use other than on the app store...

I will buy this when it comes out. Really looking forward to upgrading to a Retina display over my current iPad (which looks terrible next to my iPhone 4S).

I feel like i'm in crazy town, that i've had the ipad 2 for a year. I need to bring the ipad in to the store and have them check the battery.

You're talking about CPU and GPU cores right? They follow a tick-tock pattern like Intel because it's pretty tough (and expensive) to provide a complete CPU and GPU upgrade every year. You're also waiting on ARM to push out new designs. The smaller refreshes do usually bring higher clock speeds, more L2 cache, increased memory bandwidth, lower power consumption, etc.

iPhone 2G & 3G: ARM11 + MBX-Lite
iPhone 3GS & 4: Cortex A8 + SGX 535
4S: dual core Cortex A9 + SGX 543MP2

The A6 will almost certainly debut in 2012 but it probably won't have the Cortex A15 as ARM just recently finished it and pushed it out to manufacturers. A15 chips won't be here till late 2012.

I'd expect a quad core A9 in the iPad 3. They might just call it a "quad core A5" and then debut the Apple A6 and its Cortex A15 core with the LTE iPhone in Fall 2012. *lots of salt*

Yeah if anything, I'd expect the 'A6' or whatever they would call it to be basically like an underclocked Vita ... 4-core cortex A9 and an SGX543MP4. I'd be surprised if they went with a + GPU however (dedicated VRAM, etc). Would be cool though. Essentially this SoC would be an evolution of the A5 ... and maintain the sort of tick-tock releases you're talking about, while still offering significant performance gains.

If the rumors are true regarding Samsung winning the contract again (despite their legal battles in other areas of the companies), it only makes the above more likely given Samsung did the Vita SoC iirc.

More interesting is if the rumors that the 28 nm process is ready - http://news.softpedia.com/news/Sams...le-A6-SoC-Production-Says-Report-228220.shtml

The Apple A5 and Sony Vita SoC's were built using a 45 nm process (though obviously we can expect a Vita revision with better battery life in the not-to-distant future). If Apple can launch at 28 nm with quad cores, they'll be able to offer a nice upgrade with similar battery performance to the iPad 2 (industry leading). Such a design would see significant graphics increases and better multitasking.

Actually now that I think about it, maybe going with dedicated VRAM isn't so crazy ... assuming they are doing a higher res screen. Regardless, they need to go with 1GB of RAM this time (or more, but yeah that won't happen). There are simply too many limitations with multitasking and even general browsing staying with 512MB ... and that's even if they don't go with higher resolution. This move would make very obvious improvements in its every day usage - and without it, would undercut performance gains from the SoC.

so any verdict on my predicament?

If anyone here just receieved an iPad 2 for Christmas from family would you ask them to return and wait or just use it and not worry...

Just use it. It's at least 3 months until the new one, probably 4. If you still want the new one, sell the one you have now and upgrade.

I wanted an iPad a year ago but Ive been holding off solely for a higher res display, and now that I've figured out how to stream content from my home media server to my iPad / iPhone no matter where I am I can't wait to get one.

I saw a rumor that the display on the iPad 3 is supposed to use a newer kind of LCD called "IGZO" as opposed to the typical "S-IPS" which I guess is supposed to be more efficient and easier to manufacture for higher res displays. Not really sure if it has any image quality advantages over S-IPS though

Apple filed a patent for an improved type of OLED this year, I was kind'a hoping thats what the iPad 3 and next iPhone 5 would be using, but oh well maybe next year

Would be nice if they kept around the iPad 2 for maybe $300 or so. Would probably pick one up.

I think that's pretty much a lock. Just like they've been riding the corpse of the 3GS well past its prime, we're likely to see the iPad2 live on in some factor well through 2012.

The Retina display process is supposed to be more efficient than the current IPS technology. The thickness rumor, however, is based on Apple continuing to use an IPS display.

OLED has less resolution than LCD, just look at any OLED display. Some manufacturers count the sub-pixels as if they were independent pixels to claim a higher ppi than in reality.

current OLEDs yeah but its inevitable that is where the display market is headed, but Apple will wait till the tech is right though before going that route

Resolution has little direct effect on power usage. The long-pole is still the backlight.

Granted, the GPU will use more power for rendering however.

Exactly what is this display process you speak of? Retina display is just an IPS TFT LCD screen that Apple gave a marketing name to since it had the best PPI of its peers. There's really nothing magical about it, it's just a nice screen with good resolution. It's power draw is still mainly tied to the backlight.

LOL

Sony's HMZ-T1 use a pair of 0.7", 1280x720 OLED's. That's 2,098.01 PPI :p

Even the Galaxy Nexus is a 720p screen. With it being 4.65", that's a PPI 315.83 (though admittedly this particular screen is pentile).

There are other high PPI OLED's available as well. Expect continued advances.

Okay! I'm going to be selling my iPad 2 tomorrow :) Got back 400 from the 450 I paid for it. I just hope the next one will be out in Feb at least.

Supposedly they also needed to put in a second light bar for the retina display, which could be why it would be bigger, then again these are all just rumors I've seen online so they it could all be bullshit.
