With an 83"C1, 3 SVS sub Dolby Atmos HDMI 2.1 AVR setup, I am one of those.
I'd also add:Not surprising, there are several reasons (i am speaking of my experience in my country but i expect its not very different in US or other countries):
- General rise in ticket prices (which is not completely down to inflation; atleast part of it is production houses squeezing theatres, and theatres in turn squeezing customers) including the associated costs of transport, in-theatre food, etc
- General decline in quality of movies, fewer movies are worth the total cost of the movie theatre experience. Dune part 1 & 2 are recent exceptions to this that i can remember. They were amazing to watch in IMAX. But otherwise, most modern movies are mediocre as fuck.
- Worsening movie theatre experience: people in general are becoming bigger assholes. Loud talking, cellphones out with full brightness, coming in 20 minutes late and walking around in front of the screen. Just fucking ruins the experience. Why the fuck should i pay so much money for other assholes to ruin my experience ?
- Improvement in home watching experience: equipment is becoming more affordable (good screens, projectors, sound systems, etc) and you have total control over your experience. You can plan a convenient time and watch without disturbances and distractions (except for the ones you yourself create).
- Greater availability of movies on various streaming platforms (or the high seas) at a cheaper price
No they’re not. The digital cameras that are being used on everything now are 6K and that’s just for IMAX.
They’re not moving on fro 4K because you can’t pull any more detail from 35mm film higher than 5K. So 4K is going to be the max for movies.Interesting, I thought that they had moved on from 4k, but they are filmed with a high dynamic range that theater screens can't deliver. Projection in most cases is still not producing an image comparable to a 4k HDR display, which could be lowering the value of going to the theater for people.
Theaters need to upgrade their screens.
Movies are being shot in 8K HDR and we can see none of that at the cinema. We need those large LED panels that Samsung makes that offer perfect color and contrast everywhere.
It's surprisingly tough to find a list of movies filmed in 8K. Not sure about HDR, but at the very least, Guardians of the Galaxy Part 2 was filmed in 8K.No they’re not. The digital cameras that are being used on everything now are 6K and that’s just for IMAX.
IMAX cameras still use large format film. Movies shot for IMAX like Dune Part 2 are shot on the IMAX film format and then converted to digital for post-processing.No they’re not. The digital cameras that are being used on everything now are 6K and that’s just for IMAX.
That's because seeing a movie in theatres requires moving your body, which isn't something the average US citizen is inclined to do.
not exactly, though filming on something like 70mm would be able to resolve to something ridiculous like ~14k. The projector is still at 4k though.Interesting, I thought that they had moved on from 4k
Not true. All of the Marvel and DC movies are shot for IMAX on a Arri Alexa 65.IMAX cameras still use large format film. Movies shot for IMAX like Dune Part 2 are shot on the IMAX film format and then converted to digital for post-processing.
I think the only movie I saw the past year that I wish I supported in theaters was Past Lives and it's because it like a mirror reflection of my past relationship of dating an immigrant who left young and I often encouraged to explore that side of them to be more Chilango and that I would never want to stop them from happiness, even if it meant going back and leaving me here. Course we broke up for a myriad of reasons, but it accurately depicted that struggle in a way I haven't seen before and that was worthy of box office money, I bought it on blu ray as a substitute though.Hollywood did this to themselves with the headlong rush into unprofitable streaming models at the same time as most of their movies became shit tier content only good enough for streaming. I hope they enjoy their continuing losses and financial crises
I saw Dune Part 2 on the IMAX and I can't think of another film I actually want to see in the theater coming this year
Are you Dr Dolittle? You can put together a high quality movie theater in your house for 2 grand where you can pause, snuggle with ur pets, don't have to deal with inconsiderate animals, etc why would I ever go to theaters?
If size and spectacle is what makes a movie good it's trash anyway. I watched back to the future on a 20 inch screen. Loved every minute of it.Fuck that shit. Nothing beats the theatrical experience for a how new movie with great cinematography.
People nowadays are watching shit like DUNE on their fuckng phone or shit 30" TV and then complaining it was no good.
I hope theaters stay alive. Top Gun Maverick in theaters was something else. Didnt hit anywhere near the same at home. And I have a 65" OLED with surround sound.
