Uber Eats - Do you use it, and do you tip?

I've always left tips when using this service, but then I randomly looked it up, and Uber itself basically says tips aren't really expected and they compensate the drivers based on service fees and other factors.

One order I did recently had like $11 in service fees, delivery fees, taxes, ect. It's a pretty insane portion of the bill that is already higher than usual since they price the food items higher than if you went there yourself on top of taking in the service fee.

So even if I left a "shitty" $3 tip, I'm at $14 to get some food delivered. And this appears to be the cheapest food delivery service. Postmates is fucking outrageous and I won't use them. It really helps motivate a guy to drive after his own food

They do it to get you to subscribe to the monthly pass which actually saves money if you order out a lot. Not to mention if you wait until they give you discounts, for example I just got an email for 25% off my next three orders.

I get those emails often as well.

Postmates is garbage and I will never use them again. Horrible customer service.

The best customer service that is super responsive and very generous on taking care of you, is BiteSquad.

Yeah, I basically only order when I get discounts. I just don't do it often enough to subscribe because the selection in my area just isn't good enough. I can't get Raising Canes or KFC on Uber Eats. It's like, what is America even about anymore?

I forgot to say, yes I tip. Pretty generous for the most part as well. I remember what it was like to have to deliver food at one time in my life.

I tip because I'm a good person. But nobody that I know does it, because in my culture(Brazilian) you just don't tip.

And that's because people here don't usually have money that they don't absolutely need. And sometimes I don't either. But if I can, I will tip.

Not Uber Eats, but i occasionally use DoorDash if there is a discount special. Otherwise i would rather just drive and pick it up myself since it's usually much cheaper to do that.

Tipping drives me nuts. I am more than happy to pay someone a nice tip if service was above and beyond the call of duty, but I have never felt that it should be my responsibility to make sure you are earning enough. For waitresses specifically, I'm sorry but it's not my problem that the industry you work in is allowed to pay you less than the minimum wage. That should not be allowed in my opinion. Minimum means....minimum.

My buddy and I went out to a place for wings a few months back and he conveniently forgot his wallet. Come tip time, he wants me to tip the maximum amount on the debit machine. I'm like, if it was up to me, I wouldn't tip. He's like "do you know how much they make?" . Don't care, not my problem, change the laws instead of attempting to guilt me into giving away more money to a waitress that did the absolute minimum her job requires.

I hate tipping culture. They're doing a job. You tip because you're scared they might do something to your food? One hell of an extortion racket.

What I hate more about it is that it's not clear if you even should on some services. They charge pretty high delivery fees and service charges. How much of that goes to the driver? They won't say.

A few years ago I did some Amazon Flex deliveries on the side to make some extra cash on weekends. This shit was insane. They paid a base rate of $18/hour in my area and then people tipped like crazy. I was pulling in over $30/hour after factoring in the cost of gas because of those tips.

People caught on and started jailbreaking their phones and using 3rd party apps that would grab the work blocks before anyone else could get them so I gave up on it and got my weekends back. But ever since then, I've questioned tips on some of these services more heavily.

Do you live in the US? People are paid less by their employer if they work at a tipped job.
*shrug* I'd rather have advocates push back against the restaurant industry since that's where this mess all came from. They've been using that loophole since forever.

Started using it recently and I actually really like the service aside for the delivery fee LOL. I tend to order usually if its free delivery. Not sure how your app works but for mine they cycle in restaurants every 5 minutes that offer free delivery. But sometimes I just say F it and order and pay the 4.50 delivery fee.

There is an option to tip and I always just chose 15% so it adds it to the bill and I never have to hand anyone any cash. I like that it shows you where exactly the driver is on the app, and its a total cashless transaction, everything is done on the app.

I used to also never use Uber (car) until recently and even though the company is scummy, I can't knock its service. Its the same with Uber eats. I don't see how anyone makes money doing it but its super convinent for me.

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
I was using it a lot back then. I would tip if my order was delivered properly, no missing items or condiments. Otherwise I wouldn’t.

One day I actually ordered McDonalds from Uber Eats :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I was on vacation and was stoned out of my mind like an innocent woman in Syria every day. I was kinda surprised by how well they packaged the order up and how fresh the food was compared to when I get it myself. I almost feel like they put more effort into these orders since the items are more expensive or something.

All of these food delivery services are nonsense. How lazy and fat are we when we need to pay double to have something brought to us at 50-100% more of the price?
I'm fit, have a huge dick, and have money in the bank.

Keep jumping on those goombas and collecting those coins and you'll be in a position like that some day too!

If you don't tip you are a fucking asshole 👍

I'm an asshole then.

If I am paying full price for food then why should I have to pay even more on top of that? "Here is your bill sir. Oh and you're supposed to pay extra because its expected" fuck no.

The whole idea of tipping is fucking stupid because you're supposed to pay a percentage of your bill. If I go to cracker barrel and spend like 14 bucks on breakfast I am supposed to pay a %, if I go to some very expensive place I am supposed to pay the same % when both people did the same thing?

Fuck tipping. It's not my fault I live in a society where wait staff are stupid enough to work shit wages doing a job that almost every other country in the world gets paid a normal wage to do and where tipping isn't a thing. It's not my job to make sure I give you a hand out.

There are millions of people who serve their customers in this country in a variety of ways and make a decent wage and you'd never tip.

The only exception I make is where I eat breakfast every Saturday for like 30 years now. Its run by the same people and they are always extremely nice to me. I'm one of the regulars that everyone knows. They know my name, what I like, will hold my booth for a bit when it's close to my time to come in, etc. I always tip them and 4 of them I give a card to with 25 bucks in it at christmas.

The only asshole I see is the person who expects me to pay my bill and then reach in my pocket to give them even more. Go get another job if you dont make enough money. Go mop floors at walmart for higher pay but dont expect handouts because you agreed to work for 3 bucks an hour.

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
Half the time I order from them, items are missing especially with meals and/or I don't get condimnents (i.e. packet of tartar sauce) even when I request them.

Even Uber itself is getting too pricey imo. I used to get $4 one way rides and now it's closer to $8.

I agree.

I don't use Uber-eats nor do I believe in tip regardless of the service.
I mean, do you ask for the paypal to tip someone who helped you out in a helpdesk, or in the foodstore for being nice? or why not give the UPS-guy 10 bucks for not shitting in your delivery?

No you don't tip the "other guys" but for some reason bringing food to your table or to your door is on another level and deserves a bit extra cash.

I knew someone who drove for Uber, and tips were a big part of them making money.

If Uber charges 4.50 per delivery, someone would have to do 4 deliveries to make something worthwhile. And I doubt they get the whole 4.50. So tips help them out.

And yes its on Uber for being scummy, but you are supporting that scumminess by using their service, at least tip the people bringing your lazy ass the food. You don't want to tip then get it yourself.

I used to do ubereats for a bit. I would say about 1/3 of all people don't tip.

Some of the delivery fee is going to the driver but not all of it. For your standard order that's say around 10 bucks and the restaurant is a few miles away then you'll get charged a delivery fee of 3.99. The driver is comped 2.99 pre-tip and the rest goes to the app. It could take the driver 10 mins to get to the restaurant, 2-5 mins to get the food and another 10 minutes to get it to you. Depending on area, how much people are ordering, distance travelling, etc, it could be a minimum of 15 mins but usually around 30 mins total to do one delivery. This can change depending on area and neighborhoods. That tip is basically what pushes people from making mininum wage into the $10 an hour territory. Of course drivers are still paying for their own gas and they'll have to file their own taxes. I did UberEats and PostMates for about a month and once I started crunching the numbers I was only making on avg $9 an hour after gas, taxes and maintenance was taken out and this is only happening during the prime delivery hours.

Also, most of the time those apps jack the numbers on all the menu prices by 50 cents to a dollar and none of it goes to the driver.

And for fun, the demographics of who tipped and by how much went kinda like this (speaking from my experience alone)

  • most people using such services are single
  • most people using such services are women, 20-40 years old
  • poor families/people tipped well
  • college students are wildcards, they either don't tip or they'll tip 50% of the order
  • rich families tended to tip poorly or not at all
Lastly, if you live in an apartment complex and if it's hard to see numbers or letters at nighttime please for the love of god meet your driver outside, don't make them waste 10+ minutes trying to find out exactly where 327 G is. It's an ounce of your time and it could mean missing out on the next delivery or waiting 10 mins (sadly all the drivers in any area will be competing against each other)

I have never used any of these food delivery services. I even carry-out my Dominos pizza, it's only like 1 mile from my house. It's like 7.99 carry-out price, wayyyy cheaper. If I'm having a few friends over, I order like 5 pizzas and then go pick it up myself. Same thing with other fast-food joints. I either drive-thru the food on my way back from work or wherever, or I just get off the couch and drive there, dine-in, then go back home.

That being said, I wouldn't mind trying it out if the restaurants were closer. I would feel guilty making someone drive like 5+ miles just to deliver drunk/stoned me 1 burger and and medium fries, which would probably be cold and hard by the time they get to me. Tipping is also never an issue, I don't mind tipping around 10% at dine-in restaurants. But I'm not fan of all of these tacked-on fees OP mentioned. Why get 5 bucks worth of food delivered when the fee is almost double the original cost + tipping? lol.

I delivered McDonald's once to a trucker pulled over on the side of the road. I've never seen someone more happy to get a Big Mac with sweet tea.

Do they force you to buy those bags that keep the food warm or is that given to you?

For postmates they sent me all the gear in the mail free of charge.

Signing up is real easy. The form takes a few minutes and then they'll run a background check/driving check on you over a few days and then you're set.

They do push all sorts of scummy services meant to take your pay. Cashing out costs 50c each time or you can wait to get the weekly monday deposits to your checking, they try to get you to sign up for their awful insurance policies, they try to get you to buy hoodies and t-shirts from them.

In their defense most of those places are super upfront that they don't expect people to try to make anything more than spending money off the service. If you're in college like me or just need a sidejob you're better off delivering pizzas through a chain or working something else.

I'm conflicted, the service is convenient, but its turned driving in the city into Mumbai: battle royale.

No, i like money and I don't want to be fat. Cook your own food, it will be healthier and cost less. Ordering food is a decadent luxury and you shouldn't do it unless you have zero money problems, and are either married or so attractive that it makes any potential spouses drool.

A lot of you ITT are not living up to your potential or responsibilities. Start saving money, go to the gym, and cook your own food. What are you, royalty? If your not living your best possible life uninstalling uber eats is a good place to start. Learning to cook will be rewarding.

Why wouldn't you tip for a service rendered? This is from someone that orders Uber Eats/Postmates everyday and I always tip. As with any tipping thread, if you won't tip then don't use the service.

Because it may be built into the service fees and delivery fees already. That's what uber itself has stated before.

And let's not get started on services that don't get tips vs those that do and the invisible line between them. I don't think it's out of the question to wonder if you're supposed to tip on these things.
