Vivendi is coming ;)

Jesus. And they keep hiring at their Mtl studio too. How many employees do they have by now? 10.000? Tax breaks pretty much mandate this kind of growth, but it's impressive nevertheless.

If it happens in Chicoutimi, it's likely that they're opening a branch there. This is framed as related to Quebec, therefore QUITE unlikely to be Vivendi related. Like I said, Chicoutimi is quite far from where Ubi QC and MTL are, it's a small city in Quebec.

This is the most logical reply so far.

The announcement happens in Chicoutimi, which is an urban subdivision of Saguenay, a city about 2 hours away from Quebec City. It is likely that they will be talking about some sort of branch expansion taking place there.

This is big for the city of Saguenay and expansions are more often than not good for companies so I'd say it's great for Ubisoft as a whole.

The fact that Jean La-La Tremblay will be present at the conference is pretty much a giveaway.

Press Release is in Chicoutimi
Saguenay Mayor and Saguenay promotion dude are going to be present

It's obviously a new studio in Saguenay...

Yep, though I don't see any indication that it's specifically the Quebec City studio making the announcement. It's a joint presser by Yves Guillemot and Yannis Mallat, who is heading the MTL, QC City, and Toronto studios.

Chicoutimi is a pretty small city, I would be surprised if it's anything more than a support studio, but it's really, really awesome to see this happen.

At some point they were trying to get investment from the Canadian government to counteract the Vivendi takeover. Maybe it's actually happening and they're opening and other studio with that.

The Vivendi joke is stupid. It's not that peopoe don't know what you're implying, it's just dumb. Anyway. Thus is probably an expansion. If they are having a press event then it's gotta be something about a studio expanding rr a joint venture

Damn how the first 6 posts in a row are shitposts that don't have anything to do with the news

This is just Ubisoft from QUEBEC CITY announcing something, probably an expansion. The biggest studio in Canada is the Montreal one. Vivendi is a french company. No, Ubisoft getting bought wouldn't make them better at all

GAF hivemind can be really pathetic, after people wonder why gamers are jokes. You wouldn't even see those shit comments/misinpretations on freaking Facebook news comments

Vivendi is a French company and Quebec is in french Canadia. Shit man you just figured this whole thing out.

Vivendi is buying up Ubisoft one studio at a time.

Yes it really is. And yes, I don't think Ubisoft Quebec has anything to do with the announcement. The press release mentions Ubisoft as a company, not any subdivision.

I'm increasingly convinced it might be government related

well, yeah. Ubi gets a bunch of tax benefits to operate in Montreal because of all the jobs they create and money they directly or indirectly spend in the province of Quebec. So yeah, if its about them expanding their business on the area, it's government related too

a) It's in Chicoutimi, a small town 5h away from Montréal
b) Jean là-là Tremblay, mayor of Saguenay, is gonna be there

Easy to conclude that they are expanding a new office and creating jobs in the Saguenay region, then. Good for them, I guess -- there's not that many big industries there except tourism and natural resources, so that should be good for economic growth. Though Chicoutimi does have a university. I wonder if they'll expand their IT program to have game dev stuff?

Everyone needs Uplay, no sidestepping. It's also been renamed and we are going exclusive, no Steam support.

They better not show Assasins' Creed Origin to Jean Tremblay haha.

The university there has an exclusive Masters Degree related to videogames too.

Quick Google search just showed me that they seem to have partnered with the university there this year for a contest, I would definitely expect a partnership of some sort. It'll likely be much cheaper for Ubi to support school programs and hire locally there than it is to outsource whatever labor this new studio will do (guessing mocap)

This is very interesting. It's rare (maybe even unheard of?) to see a large scale publisher tease news from a specific studio. Ubisoft Quebec is involved with a lot of games, but it's not like it's especially known for something specific, like RedLynx or Massive. Makes me think it's not related to a specific game or series.

And it's obviously not related to Vivendi. Any news regarding that would not be teased since a buyout would be communicated by Vivendi themselves, and if it was communicated by Ubisoft it would come from Paris.

Edit: Maybe a new studio opening, but Ubisoft opened a Stockholm studio just a few weeks ago and just posted a video about it. No press conference or teasing. Also the conference is early in the morning, coinciding with European afternoon, making it more likely to have international relevance. But maybe I'm just reading into this too much...

I just think they will do like other companies like CGI for example. They will open another office and expand but send everyone in Saguenay instead of opening other positions in Montreal because cost of life etc... Cheaper for them.

This is pretty clearly some kind of studio expansion, and the reason there's a livestream is almost certainly because they're getting a grant (or some other kind of financial/business arrangement) from the Quebec government and both parties want to trumpet this new arrangement. Why else would the Minister of Finance be there?

Hopefully it's just a new studio or some kind of smaller studio acquisition. Maybe an exclusive partnership though.
