Ugly Masculine Female Leads In Video Games

Honestly, if you think Horizon Zero Dawn only sold 20 million copies because Aloy doesn’t look as dolled up as that meme of her in makeup
I also think it's really important to put things into perspective, and not throw everything under the blanket of 'woke', which forgoes further nuance. Take Aloy, for example: she is a little pudgy, but definitely still pretty.

Whereas if you profess to be a heterosexual male who finds the ND main character sexually attractive, I'd argue you have latent homosexual tendencies (I'd actually like to hear from gay guys how they feel about him/her, that'd be fascinating). But I admit even that's a spectrum, that's just where I personally put the line.

What it ultimately comes down to is, it seems more like a political "fuck you" to straight men than an artistic decision. Aloy is not even close to being in that ballpark.

Plenty of games with hot dudes and hot ladies have flopped. These games that flopped “because of ugly female leads” or “beCuZ wOkE” all had glaring flaws that contributed more to them flopping than the MC design.

Either way, this cockroach riddled dude is the last person I’d go to for advice or insight about looks.

For me, it's less the uglification and more the "girlboss" archetype that puts me off. I don't need a character I find attractive - it helps make the experience more pleasurable, but it's not central to my enjoyment. However, I do need a character who is not both boring and annoying. Girlboss characters are almost invariably both boring and unlikeable. That's the real issue afaic.

This is ultimately the decision of the creative direction of a Game and can have influence in it's success, in both directions. Just as much as a Bad Story. I think the key here is authenticity. If you can't make it feel real, it's on you..

Nevertheless, be real, haters gonna hate no matter what.

Some gay guys prefer manly men, some more feminine men. I don't think a whole lot of gay guys has the hots for ugly masculine women.

Funny though just crossed my mind. It'd make a lot of sense if samus was bald.
