UK - DS vs PSP this week

Still, from what I can tell the DS is gaining momentum in Europe and you start seeing PSPs for sale on ebay and in specialized forums.
But even if PSP fails in Europe, which I find unlikely, it will still have done a lot of damage to Nintendo's business. Retailers are focusing so hard on PSP you'd think it's the only handheld around. If you're a casual consumer who doesn't follow the gaming market except what you see in ads chances are you've never heard of a DS.

I have said it a few times, but I'll repeat it. Perhaps it just my area here, perhaps it's the whole of Germany, I don't know. But what is true atleast for the stores I went in is that PSP's shelf space isn't THAT big. It is about ~25-50% bigger than the DS', but about 33% of it are UMD movies. In fact DS' shelf space is big enough cause nearly all games released (also games like Castlevania [yes, they have it ;)]) are there.
The next thing is the advertisement. I have seen the PSP ads in TV perhaps 2 or 3 times in the last ~7 weeks, but I have also seen one Nintendogs ad and an ad in the cinema where Nintendo DS was one of the main sponsors.
On top of that I don't see PSP dominating for example at amazon.de. It was in the top 5 for about a week, but then fell of quite fast (right now it is no. 25, but it has also been in the 40's or 50's).
And then there is the missing PR from Sony. I just don't understand it. Before the launch they said that they wanted to ship sth. like 1.5m (or was it 1m, I don't know anymore) alone to the UK until the end of the year.
But why don't they announce anything!? They should atleast be able to announce sth. like "Our launch was incredible successful, we have sold through 90% of our intial shipment in 7 days" or sth. like that (it would of course be better if they would just announce how many units they have sold ^^ But ... well).

i wonder if they are holding everything back for King Ken's speech on the 29th so they can have a PSP hype fest ?

Also, anyone know why the new sony game has been delayed by 2 months AFTER it was already available at some stores?!? It's the "island" game thingy.

There was some info coming from 2ch about certain games not working with certain firmwares, so i wonder if there is something "up" with firmware 2.50?

I wouldn't say that, european TV ads have been very efficient to create awareness for the DS. All that was missing was a real killer app. Castlevania? Advance Wars? No. Nintendogs. The dogs are enjoying a phenomenal success in Europe, and Mario Kart is set to be another great system seller for Christmas. The Brain games will certainly be released in Q1 in Europe, so I would say after Japan, the DS is on a roll in Europe too.

Chances are VERY small you never heard about the DS. In fact, you'd have more chance of not knowing what a PSP is. Saw the commercial a few times since launch, but it only makes clear it's about PSP in the very end.

When Nintendo promotes Mario Kart DS like they never did before, they going to enlarge the gap between DS and PSP.

The PSP print Ads in the UK are actually quite obscure.... they try to highlight four symbols, one for each of the PSP functions ( games, music etc ) without being very clear at what the PSP is.

All three versions of Nintendogs sold almost 20'000 units within the first 10 days in Germany. Don't know the hardware numbers of last week but there were no PSP titles selling nearly that much.

20'000 is actually quite good - DS software sales have been really low since the system's launch. Nintendogs already is the third-best selling game after Wario Ware and Mario 64 DS in Germany.

You must live on a private island thinking that. You cant walk into an European retail or gaming shop and not see BOTH handhelds there. You might want to take a look at some of the extra space that PSP has over DS and see all of the UMD movies taking the majority of the room, NOT games.

Besides, of course many retailers are going to push PSP hard, at least in the UK(it's not the same situation in other parts of Europe). It's Sony-town and they stand to gain alot more from ripping you off at PSP's UMD and game prices than DS.

To be fair - the reasons I don't post weekly sales figures are firstly - I don't really have the time, secondly they are generally confidential but I couldn't resist posting this weeks as it's the first time DS has overtaken the PSP since the latter was released in the UK, and thirdly if you don't believe me then it doesn't really matter anyway, does it? ;)

You don't have time? Oh come on man!! All it takes is about 5 to 10 mintues to turn your computer on, open a internet screen, login to GAF, and post a new thread.

Stop complaining you did it to show off DS's numbers in the U.K. and that's the only reason why you did it. You want people here think that the DS is beating the PSP every week now because of Nintendogs.

I dare you to post the PSP vs. DS numbers the week after GTA:LCS comes out.

In one post Olly found that independent and smaller game retailers are being offered a total of four Xbox 360s to sell. Even bigger stores like Toys R’ Us only have around ten units for sale. The reason for this? Microsoft has only allocated 100,000 units to the UK in total. That’s in comparison to the PSP’s 250,000 units at launch; a console which is still suffering chronic shortages around 6 weeks after its launch.

<insert reggie saying "not my problem" picture>

the impending Gigapack (if true) might account for a deliberate holding back of stock.

but given the media barrage that's reportedly going on , it would seem totally stupid for Sony not to have replenshed stock. And with the capacity of the plants apparently at 1 million units a month, surely they have some units available?

i think Gaybrush Threepio's post of the ds sales was really the final vindication of nintendogs as a AAA system seller, not so much a psp bash. remember the history:

'nintendogs! lol, its not going to sell anywhere.'

to:

'nintendogs! yeah, well japan has weird taste in games, it's not going to sell anywhere else.'

to:

'nintendogs! yeah, well okay, it's been a big hit in japan and north america, but it's not going to sell in europe, that's sonyland.'

to:

'nintendogs! yeah well...'

psp will continue to do well in europe and hopefully so will ds. imo choice is a great thing.

now all the other threads are locked, which is true?

1) there is a shortage and sony hasn't shipped an extra 1.x million to europe
2) there is a shortage and the extra units have already sold out, sony just got their PR wrong about sell through numbers when they said they'd sold 1 million units
3) there isn't a shortage and sony has shipped an extra 1.x million to europe
4) there is a shortage, sony have shipped an extra 1.x million they are just... i dunno.. held up in customs or something

:lol believe!

Knightmare gives us weekly Japanese sales figures, but a lot of you hanker after something more...European. Well, now, especially for those doubters, DSGaming has got some comparisons between the performance of the DS and the PSP in the good old UK. Check inside for what may come as a pleasant suprise...

Here are the official results of the DS in the UK.
Even within its launch month, the PSP can’t maintain the weekly lead in the UK, and the DS show its strength, world wide and regional leader in units sold, in October.

22nd - 29th October:
NDS: 30,000
GBA SP: 15,500
PSP: 12,900

14th - 21st October:
NDS: 23,035
GBA SP: 10,034
PSP: 8,000

6th - 13th October:
NDS: 24,492
PSP: 18,723
GBA SP: 8,799

Nintendo DS rules the month selling more than 80,000 units only in the UK, while the GBA sold out more of 40,000 units. PSP sold approximately 40,000 units.
In spite of the fact that these figures don’t express the total sales in Europe, this shows the great work of the Nintendo DS in the old world. In USA, Nintendo DS has retaken the lead, where it is also the total regional leader. Of course, the DS is still way ahead in Japan, making this a very happy day for Nintendo DS fans.
But with the launch of GTA on the PSP, and Nintendo Wi-FI Connection, the near future will be interesting...

DSGaming will keep you updated.

I have no idea how reliable these numbers are .. but if true - so much about the PSP dominance in the UK.
