UK plans age verification for porn websites from 2018

The study found 28% of children may have stumbled across pornography while browsing, while 19% had searched for it deliberately.

So how is this going to work with foreign sites like Reddit, Pornhub and Tumblr? This is badly thought out and a really stupid idea.

Given how cookie warnings show up on loads of non-EU hosted sites, I don't think it's nearly as simple as you think. And UK has an infrastructure set up already to block some stuff (infamously affecting LoL update or something like that because filename contained word "sex") so they could use the same thing to block non-compliant foreign businesses.

How is superfluously collecting CC info not in breach of the Data Protection Act? This really hasn't been thought through.

What about sites that have magnet links for torrents or hyperlinks to other sites that do have porn?
You say this as if they thought this far. If they could bend the laws to go after Torrent sites they can do it here clearly. It's only a question of how far they wanna go.

Gambling sites already have to do it. It's not breaching the data protection act of 1998 because they NEED to collect that data.

Wait, I though we'd already 'solved' this by making people choose whether they wanted to block porn or not when they signed up to a broadband service....

I don't think foreign companies are going to bother setting up a facility to take UK users credit card details considering how low the proportion of traffic from there is.

This is part of the Digital Economy Bill that they rushed through before parliament was disbanded for the election, by the way.

I should feel positive of it failing given May's weak position now, however Labour seems to have waved most of the Tories nefarious internet-spying garbage through so expect no difference here.

Arguably the most ludicrous thing about this is that the age of consent in the UK is 16. You can have sex for two years before you're allowed to watch it? Mental.

Not the right way to go about things.

As always education from a reasonable age (8~10) on a detailed introduction to the body/sex, combined with further in-depth education as high school begins/progresses is how to sensibly approach the youth. Parents and adults have some autonomy over restricting websites/PC use and so on, but that should be at a parental level, not a government level. Parents who simply cheer now and think the Government is doing their parenting for them, smh. You need to take ownership of educating your own children, and yes, occasionally that can be through mild forms of censorship/restriction until they mature. Largely at a micro-parental level though, we do not require a big brother state to do things for us.

Someone can be both wise and tuned into some of the social issues that can arise with the world of pornography and ill-educated/impressionable minds only consuming hyper stimulating material. But also wise and tuned into a Government wanting to usher in some 1984 levels of authoritarian policing, moral-busy bodying and censorship.

I'll pimp this documentary again on GAF like I routinely do for an insight into how things can be better managed in schools ~ http://www.channel4.com/programmes/sex-in-class The Government and parents acting like anyone before the age of 18 will not and cannot interact sexually with the world are behaving like a fundamentalist approach to a religious movement. To combat many of the issues that can arise socially/behaviorally through the consumption of sexual content, education and speaking openly and honestly go a far longer way than archaic attempts to censor/restrict/frustrate.

Anything to avoid sitting down with your children and discussing what pornography is and the ways it isn't a realistic depiction of sex, I guess. Just let the government legislate instead so you can avoid feeling slightly awkward and your kids have to spend 20 seconds circumventing the age gates

Don't watch porn myself but it's ridiculous the approach the government is taking. kids will find porn. There was basically a black market when I was going high school.

Doesn't the uk government have more pressing issues to deal with at the moment?

I think what’s important is that we get on with the job and getting on with the job is about delivering for people.

I look forward to the return of the good old days when I was a lad and you'd find dog-eared copies of Mayfair and Penthouse in the bushes at local parks.

Those were the days, you really had to work to find your spank material!

Lol she either really really hates the Internet or will get a percentage from every credit card theft.
She's a Tory, not understanding the modern world while lining her own pockets go hand in hand.

Good thing I torrent all my filthy smut in 4K...

This is unenforceable. Just like the illegalise sex acts. However it should be fought against, because it is the step towards worse. Most sites already have a age verification check. This is a form of control, not safety and it should be fought against as such.

Confused teens will be asking each other for their credit cards as the new form of consent.

I bet she has an old smut tape of her from the 70's floating around somewhere and she's trying everything she can to make sure people won't see it accidentally.

Do you think this wouldn't be happening if we were out of the EU?

I'm pretty sure this was used at one point as a reason to get out of the EU.

Yeah sort of contradicts the whole more freedom for business and individuals pitch for Brexit.

Regulations to whack off.
