Uncharted 3 - E3 2011 Gameplay and Trailer

Weird that they're moving away from MLAA.
From my understanding FXAA can get some pretty good results and takes a lot of stress off the SPUs while not being too taxing on the GPU. It seems like a pretty good solution for something like Uncharted that uses the SPUs a ton.

I'm not sure about overall quality, but looking at numbers, FXAA pass takes a lot less frame time than MLAA. it also may be better at resolving sub-pixel lines and better looking during motion. In slow camera pans etc, MLAA can look more jaggedy than what the stills would suggest.

They might have gone with FXAA since it'll hold up with high contrast edges better. Judging by the new lighting effects, they may have needed to find something other than MLAA to compensate for that.

I think it'd be cool if we got a chapter in Nathan's apartment or something. He's just hanging out, and these people attack him looking for the ring. We'd get a pretty cool glimpse into Drake's regular life.

This would be pretty great. I'd like to explore his place.

I'm not sure if anyone ever did an analysis if there's much overall detail loss with fxaa. That's where MLAA is really good. The pictures from the technique inventor's website suggest it holds up really well.

This is what the FXAA author says:

FXAA3 Console on PS3 does not have the same long edge quality as Sony's MLAA, but overall FXAA3 costs significantly less, freeing up SPU time for things like tile deferred lighting, etc!
1ms for FXAA in 720p, and I think MLAA takes 8-10ms if I remember correctly.

MLAA takes 4ms in GoW3 and running on 5 SPUs

In the case of God of War III, any given frame typically takes between 16ms and 30ms to render, give or take a millisecond or two. The original 2x multisampling AA solution took a big chunk of rendering time, at 5ms. Now, the hugely more impressive MLAA algorithm takes a total of 20ms of CPU time. However, it's running on five SPUs, meaning that overall latency is a mere 4ms. So the final result is actually faster, and that previous 5ms of GPU time can be repurposed for other tasks."

Questions:

Any comparisons, what does FXAA look like?
By freeing up around 4- 7 ms on the SPUs, what could Naughty Dog do?

Spoiler that crap. what is wrong with you!!!

Also that FXAA stuff sounds interesting, more life being breathed into the old consoles.

Yessir. If these consoles just had more ram, we would see beastly gfx.

What, by Bowser?

Well, if Katherine Marlowe has a son and Drake kills him late in the game, Katherine could pull the:

'You took away someone I loved, so I am taking away the woman you love'.

That would be banging.

There is a guy in the new trailer that sort of looks like Drake.

That's the British bad guy, played by Lazarevic. So, I kind of doubt they are related.

I'm liking the possibilies I see before my eyes.

Nathan Drake is a desendant of Sir Francis Drake, who was active in Queen Elizabeth I's court at the same time as Christopher Marlowe, who is potentially an ancestor of Katherine Marlowe, Uncharted 3's antagonist. Christopher Marlowe died under suspicious circumstances, and could have been a founding member, alongside Sir Francis Drake, of the secret society that Katherine Marlowe leads.

They could add an interesting modern angle on this by having Drakes older brother be an important person in this modern version of that same society. Drake and his brother might have had the opportunity to join this society, and it could have been Sully who got Drake to turn his back on that society to become an adventurer. After all, both Sully and Drake have had previous encounters with Katherine.

I thought he was playing Cutter. (McTavish)

2 FAL bursts to the body = death
Floating power weapon pickups?
10 sec respawn
Kick to the balls melee move

Drake is long jump king. He just launches himself forward at 5:09.

The Chateau looks incredible. I can't wait for next Tuesday.

present U2 health is awful. I was hoping they changed it.

Less about health and more about the abundance of players using DTI and fleet foot, FAL would be useless if it takes another shot to kill when facing off against AK+DTI, more health would render the pistol useless. Basically boosters like DTI and sureshot fucked up some of the balance.

Don't know anything about this stuff, is this a better solution than MLAA?

MLAA is overrated, heck MLAA in GOW3 is overrated.

Nobody ever uses FAL anymore in UC2, unless we are in the fort. :P fuckingthingsucks.gif

You're overrated!

Seriously though, how can the best image quality in a console game yet be "overrated"? No other console game comes close to GOW3 in terms of IQ.

U3 beats GOW3 like a red-headed stepchild.

If this game turned out to be about a treasure-hunting family I would laugh so fucking hard.
I've been calling this for a while now :p

I hope they add more downtime segments like the Tibetan Village in Uncharted 2.

There was so much action before, like the train yard and the train scene, that the Tibetan Village worked well as a point to recharge the batteries for Drake, and feel like he got rest to continue on, which would work better than a cutscene.

Like someone mentioned, there should be a section where you are in Drakes home, and you can look at pictures, read some extra info, maybe interact with an NPC or two.

David O Russell redeemed? Oh hell naw. I'll shoot myself in the foot if that happens.

Also, that would mean O'Russell was blabbing about Uncharted 3, unknowingly spoiling the plot.

Ok that't enough, won't happen.

fxaa is worse for sub pixel. and its not about jaggy during motion its about being stable.

i knew that naughty dog would have problems implementing mlaa since their rendering pipeline was already pretty close to maxing spus. uc2 used 2xmsaa before tone mapping so there was quite a bit of aliasing, im not sure how expensive 2xmsaa is on ps3 but it should be more or close to fxaa.

the aa is kinda in the air at this point uc3 screen shots have had very inconsistent aliasing, maybe a work in progress. siggraph 2011 is going to have a entire lesson devoted on AA filtering.

7 min of deathmatch game-play at Chateau with a bunch of new unseen pieces. Big gun identifiers. Burning building stuff. Etc. Check it out!

Chateau is the best looking map so far. Definitely more my style.

That air hanger seen in previous footage just looks boring.

I finally got my Uncharted 2 DLC working over the weekend and I got a chance to play a lot of Hang'em Highrise. I LOVE HIGHRISE! That map is absolutely beautiful: the textures, the vertigo-inducing elevation, the details (the super detailed wrought iron on that staircase), the little climbing elements, the dilapidated buildings, the Indian bollywood signage, the bold colors. All the varied visual features of that map are SO sweet. I get killed because I sometime get stuck wanting to just explore the damn thing. All that destruction feels like it has its own story (my fanboy pie-in-the-sky dream: Ken Levine and his think tank collaborating with Naughty Doq. Imagine the awesome). I love it! Absolutely gorgeous. It's like an interactive piece of art or a plate of dessert I can't wait to dig into. I mean this is just Uncharted 2, a game from 2009 I'm getting excited over.

The air hanger footage I've seen so far for Uncharted 3, the 2011 game, looks flat and not nearly as imaginative. I feel like they're fighting at a Costco. Maybe I'll change my mind when I get the game.

Can anyone explain the way the beta thing
THAT STARTS NEXT WEEK!!!!
is working? Everyone can play next week, or just us Infamous 2 buyers? And what's the deal with giving the entire multiplayer away?

That's why I'm really bumping this thread; that's what I really want to know. Why on Earth would Naughty Dog do that? Won't some people play all the multiplayer for a week or two, for a hundred hours, and then say "I'm good" and not want to buy the game?

Not happy about this, it didn't even take 2 full bursts to kill the guy at 1:55ish, only 4 or 5 bullets. It should be 7, maybe 8.

Floating power weapon pickups?
That might be the booster that shows where the power weapons are, one of them is a bolt-action sniper rifle.

This..What a shocker! If this is right...

But then why do they look so much alike....?

Nate is a clone of the real Drake, and has zombie-virus genes from the El Dorado that give him regenerative abilities! :O

The 28th is when all inFAMOUS 2 buyers and PS+ members get in, the week after is everyone else.

As for giving away the entire multiplayer in October, I'm not sure how it's going to work but I'd imagine they're not going to lose too many sales because 99% of players buy the game for the single player.

It might be that the MP in October is just the two beta maps again but all stats/cash/unlocks earned carry over to the full game.
