Underrated games of 2011 you didn't play, but should have

In the wake of blockbuster titles releasing this holiday season, I started thinking of all the titles that I thought were really good, but were simply over looked (not so much by NeoGAF, but by gamers in general). So, I thought it would be a good idea to make a thread of games that simply got glossed over and deserve a second look (especially with Black Friday deals right around the corner). I want to hear what GAF has to say, and what games you guy's think we should all be looking at (obviously not big sellers / popular titles). If we could, try to keep it to a general format (probably won't happen). Maybe like this:

Title

Why it was over looked:

Why you should play it:

--------------------------------------------------------------

Bulletstorm

Why it was over looked: It just didn't have the "resonance" with gamers some of us thought it would. On top of that, it released shortly after Assassins Creed: Brotherhood, the CoD First Strike map pack, MvC3, and Killzone 3. While that's not a crowded release window, it was in February, which makes that release window seem much more competitive.

Why you should play it: It is everything that Duke Nukem should have been (for Dialogue). Cheesy lines, lots of cursing, and a nonsensical plot. The game delivered that over the top character in spades. Plus, it was fun! It brought an awesome arcade / combo twist to a very stale FPS Q1 (hell, even now is still fresh!). In a sea of (IMO) terribly bland Military Shooters, this gem deserves a look.

Resistance 3

Why it was over looked: Resistance 2. I seriously can't think of any other reason. The game looks good, plays good (Demo is available) and is unique. Sold less than R2 (so far) but deserves more than the first and second combined. Also it's "sub-HD" for those who give a shit about that stuff.

Why you should play it: Because it is probably the best Single Player campaign you'll play all year (depending on your tastes). This game is absolutely oozing with atmosphere, much in the same way Bioshock was. The game presents an intensely bleak universe, and is always reminding you how desolate things are (without the need for someone to tell you it). In the crowd of military shooters, this definitely stands out. I won't write too much as I'm incredibly biased (points to avatar) but it's worth your time. Check out the demo. Also, be prepared to download about 1GB worth of patches and additional content.

DC Universe Online

Why it was over looked: Because it's a crappy wow knock off.

Why you should play it: Well, first it's free. Second, the combat is actually not bad. The con here is that you simply can't get in "easily" and the file size for download is retarded. Still, it's a free game, and definitely worth some time. Make a few sandwiches while it downloads, installs, downloads, and installs again.

Motorstorm Apocolypse

Why it was over looked: Well, it just released at an inopportune time. The big stall from the potential PR disaster (Japan Quake) may have stifled it's "success" but I don't think it would have been a hit either way.

Why you should play it: It's incredibly fun! The game is far easier than the previous entries (meaning AI isn't trying to kill you at every turn) and the rubber banding feels like it's been considerably reduced. It's really great for some fun racing action, has awesome set pieces, and will last you much longer than the 2 Hours you'll get from NFS: The Run.

Stacking

Why it was over looked: Well, maybe it wasn't, but I don't think enough people were talking about it. It was a DD game, so naturally its audience will be much smaller.

Why you should play it: It's simply amazing. Great art, music, and writing. The puzzles are fantastic, and I had a great time going through and solving them all. Talking to all the dolls, trying to figure out what you need, and finally getting all the pieces together is an absolute joy. Fret not, there are hints for those without the time to talk to everyone!

Forza 4

Why it was over looked: I'm not sure it was, but the game deserves so much more than what it got in sales.

Why you should play it: Simply put, it is the best Sim Campaign you will probably ever play this generation. This racer has fantastic community built-in to the game. I'm a fan of GT, but this trumps it in the design department in many ways. It's absolutely worth your time if you're remotely interested in Sim Racers (plus it has Jeremy Clarkson. AUTO WIN).

Fight Night Champion

Why it was over looked: The controls can be daunting to new players, and boxing really isn't as popular as it used to be. Plus I'm sure the "M" rating put a lot of folks off thinking it would be a dude bro boxer.

Why you should play it: The single player campaign is actually very compelling. I really loved the fresh new twists they throw at you to keep each and every fight feeling fresh. Criminally underrated for a sports game. I'm pretty sure it's $4.99 on PSN, and might be the same price on 360 as well (SP only). It's worth every cent at that price! Check it out!

Batman: Arkham City - My roommate has it lying around in our dorm and he never plays it, but I never find the time to play it because of the workload I have.

edit; oh we're not including blockbuster games? Then I'm not too sure then. Rayman maybe.

Too many games to count

Why it was overlooked: Because I'm a broke ass motherfucker and games cost a fortune in my country, importing is also expensive though not as much.

Why I should play it: I'm not going to play it, I'm broke damn it.

Xenoblade

Why it was over looked: Because NOA didn't release it in the US, and because it's on Wii.

Why you should play it: Because it's the best JRPG this generation. It feels traditional and new in the same breath, and with some people playing for over 100 hours you definitely get bang for your buck. (Note: you don't need 100 hours to beat the game, don't worry). Importing is easy (even if it takes a long time), and soft-modding your Wii to play region-free is dead easy. Do it!

Mission accomplished. You've piqued my interest sir. Is there a thread on GAF anywhere for this info? Or is it "forbidden"?

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Why it was over looked: 7.5

Why you should play it: Because it's the best game ever. Probably, or almost.

Dungeon Siege III

Why it was overlooked: Didn't like the controls in the demo (turns out they're better with a controller) and people said it sucks.

Why you should play it: It was made by Obsidian.

Arkham City
Battlefield 3
Skyrim
NHL 12

Waiting for xmas for all but Skyrim, hoping Amazon has skyrim for $30 on Black Friday.

Alice: Madness Returns

Why it was over looked:
Received middling review scores with some complaints of the game having an old school design and poor controls. Didn't have much of an ad campaign and was kinda left to die by EA in a similar situation to Shadows of the Damned (which hopefully someone else will put on this list).

Why you should play it:
First, the game controls just fine. I even thought the triple jump mechanic worked out really well. Second, you'll get a lot, lot, of game for what the price is probably now. Third, Alice is just a fun surreal journey that uses the unreal engine in colorful, sadistic (nice sadistic) ways. If you miss 3D platformer games you owe it to yourself to at least try it out.

DANCE CENTRAL 2

Why it was over looked: kinect lol?

Why you should play it: its great and you can import DC1 tracks

and it has the best hair of any video game to date. chinese witchcraft.

This isn't my favorite game of the year, but

Title
Classic Dungeon X2/Cladun X2

Why it was over looked:
It's a dungeon crawler that doesn't cater to novices or genre savants on the PSP in the U.S. in 2011 that's downloadable only. I'd be happy if you were aware it got released.

Why you should play it:
http://nippon1.jp/consumer/classicdungeon_x2
http://www.nisamerica.com/games/cladun2

If you're superficial, you can enjoy the clever art, the copious customization, and a soundtrack that equals its predecessors (1 of the best of 2010).
If you're a design nerd, you can thrill at the way the random dungeons fit into the gameplay systems.
If you enjoy obsessive gameplay tinkering, the core Magic Circle component is 1 of the best of the generation; laugh at the people who insult JRPG as arcane and stodgy!

...Also, it's fun.

Hey, that means you're at least going to buy the game! :D

Outland

Why it was over looked: It's an XBLA/PSN title and had the unfortunate position of coming out a week after Portal 2 & Mortal Kombat but before Duke Nukem Forever.

Why you should play it: About as close to a spiritual sucessor to the original Prince of Persia Ubisoft will ever do. Appears to be a Metroidvania game but that's only for the power-ups/ability unlock. Other than that, the game is fairly straightforward.

Rayman Origins

Why it was over looked: It came out at the worst possible time (a week AFTER MW3 and Skyrim) and there are many other titles (Saints Row the Third, Ubisoft's own Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Halo: CE Anniversary, UMvsC3).

Why you should play it: 2D platforming goodness in HD. And it's hard but fun.

Cars 2

Why it was over looked: Came out in the middle of summer, people may dismiss it as a movie cash-in.

Why you should play it: Like Blur from last year, a very good Mario Kart clone that deserves a chance.

Monster Tale

Why it was over looked: It's on the DS and came out the same day as the 3DS launch.

Why you should play it: A very good Metroidvania platformer that sends out the DS on a high note.

RAGE

Why it was overlooked: Launch issues on PC, misunderstandings about the kind of game it is, and BIG games landing near its release.

Why you should play it: Outstandingly smooth 60 fps on both consoles, runs well on very modest PCs and has great animation and character models. The campaign is lengthy and combat is a whole lot of fun with some of the best gunplay this entire generation. The most satisfying shotgun since FEAR.

Homefront

Why it was over looked:
Poor reviews, maybe. I dunno, I didn't read GAF at the time.

Why you should play it:
I think it's $7 on Gamefly right now so it's worth a shot. The last 3rd of the game isn't particularly great, but the game has some powerful moments that make it worth playing.

Dragon Age 2

I actually did get it.

Time and I could find time to get through Dragon Age Origins Complete Edition

Resistance 3

Had it preorder at one point but adjusted for buying collectors editions of Skyrim and Disgaea 4 instead.

Time, Ill just pick it up next year because I want to see if it improved upon the predecessors.

Shadows of the Damned

Why It Was Overlooked: Some of the worst trailers I've seen for getting across the true appeal of the game. All of them made it look like the game was trying to be serious and didn't focus on the hilarious and tongue in cheek nature of the game.

Why You Should Play It: It has some of the best written and funniest dialogue I've ever heard in a game. The combat is fun, especially once you start getting the weapon upgrades and can really mix it up and wreck demons. The soundtrack is also fantastic. Not the most polished game ever but fun and quirky in the best way possible.

Glad the OP had Resistance 3. Best PS3 exclusive FPS by far. I wish I could play Xenoblade but I'm in the US and can't afford import prices. It's been a long time since I've played a good JRPG.

I know this just came out, but still

Rayman Origins

Why it was over looked: Its a 2d platformer at full-price, starring a B-list character, releasing on the same day as Assassin's Creed Revelations, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Saints Row 3, and Halo Anniversary, which are right between the release of Skyrim and Skyward Sword. Yeah...

Why you should play it: Because its the best looking 2d game I've ever seen in HD, because its a charming, challenging, creative, clever platformer with wonderful controls and lots of replayablity.

Just check the official thread. You'll be hard pressed to find anyone who genuinely disliked the game, or wasn't surprised by it's quality. Very solid game.

Is the story unique, or is it par for the course for a military shooter? I'd definitely be interested if isn't the typical stuff.

Child of Eden

Why it was over looked: Zero advertising from Ubisoft, mainly. To be fair, it's not the easiest game to advertise, but they should've done something. Also the fact that it cost $50 for a game that only takes a couple hours to beat, and misunderstanding that you can only enjoy the game if you're playing on Kinect.

Why you should play it: If you liked Rez, you have absolutely no reason to not play Child of Eden. It is a fantastic sequel with some absolutely amazing visuals that simply couldn't be done around the time Rez came out. Also the game plays great on a controller, and you can find it on 360 for 20 bucks or less now. Go for it!

I'm cautiously considering this title. I've seen some mixed reviews for Move controls...so you'd say it's definitely worth checking out if you're playing on the controller? Is there a decent score system to best?

It was very unique at the beginning, then became more cliched as it progressed. If the rest of the game's story was as emotionally charged as the beginning, rather than turning into "This needs blowin up. Go blow it up" like it was at the end, it would have been an amazing game. But I think it's enough of a departure from the traditional military shooter (in story, not in combat. Combat's the traditional shooter throughout the game, mostly) to give it a shot, as long as you're ready for the story to drop off later.

Stacking is sooooooooooooooooo good. That and Costume Quest catapulted Double Fine to my top five favorite devs.

Resistance 3 also suffered from a horrible launch window, too. In September, everyone's getting back to school and work, and saving up for the onslaught of games in November. I'm sure a lot of people thought "why get R3 when MW3 and BF3 come out next month?" That certainly influenced my decision to pass on it for a while. It will probably price drop fast, and I'll pick it up then just like I did with the second one. Also, lack of advertising on Sony's end, coupled with TWO Insomniac launches in a short period of time probably hurt it as well. It just didn't get the press that Uncharted got.

The Blackwell Deception - An absolutely first-rate adventure game that was mostly buried on GAF. The entire 4-game series is great and is easily up there with the best adventure games since Grim Fandango. Rock Paper Shotgun's article is what got me interested in the first place: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/10/13/medium-well-done-the-blackwell-deception/

It's from Wadjet Eye Games. They're also responsible for Gemini Rue which is a bit more popular around here but I believe that they only handled the publishing on that one (and maybe the voice acting).

edit: Oh, right.
Why it was over looked: Not on Steam (yet). Kind of expensive. 0 marketing.

Why you should play it: See above.

I just played through Costume Quest and its DLC a few days ago and loved it. I really want a sequel.

Title: Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky

Why it was over looked: It was released on the PSP, and if you look at the screenshots, you might think it's another animu JRPG.

Why you should play it: Because it's very reminiscent to the PSone JRPGs, charming, not annoying, and it's pretty long (around 50 hours or so). Not to mention the story doesn't jump the shark.

tom clancy's ghost recon: shadow wars

Why it was over looked:
part of the overwhelmingly underwhelming 3ds launch lineup

Why you should play it:
it was the only one worth playing. it's a kickass srpg and the 3d effect isn't annoying.

super return of the jedi

Why it was over looked:
it's not from 2011

Why you should play it:
holy shit, it's super return of the jedi

Cool thread.

Umm...

Well,

Bulletstorm:
Love Painkiller, but the demo showed me how consolized it was and I'm waiting for a $10 entry because I'm still bitter about it. It looks fun as hell, but I'm weird and stubborn about these things. Which brings me to...

Skyrim:
Well, I did hate Oblivion, but mainly I didn't get this because the MSRP is $60, which is unacceptable for a PC game for me, and the controls looked Bioshock 2-esque to me (dual wielding stuff), which I hate. Other than my personal biases, the game looks fucking awesome.

Gemini Rue:
The game is intriguing as fuck, but I didn't like the controls and instead of making me want to buy the game, the demo made me want to go back to Downfall. If any Gemini Rue players haven't heard of Downfall, just buy it blind. It's that awesome.

PS3 Games:
My PS3 has been in various states of disrepair because of my laziness in getting it replaced most of the year. I just got a refurbished slim back from Sony support last week, but I don't feel compelled to catch up. Redownloading all of my Rock Band dlc takes enough time as it is.

edit: I clearly misunderstood the point of this thread.

So many games this year...

---You Don't Know Jack

Why it was over looked
: It's a quiz/trivia game, those are stupid.

Why you should play it
: Probably the most fun trivia game I have played. THe jokes are funny and there is a large amount of content to cover so that you don't hear the same questions and jokes over and over again.

---Ōkamiden

Why it was over looked
: A DS game set in the world of Okami....but with a puppy.

Why you should play it: The same reason that it was overlooked was the reason it was great. Along with great controls and an amazing visual style, it's a shame people did not play it.

---de Blob 2

Why it was over looked
: A sequel to a wii game that not many people played in the first place.

Why you should play it: You can press "a" to jump. This may sound insignificant but the game already had an amazing soundtrack, beautiful visuals, and an interesting world. THe only thing it lacked were solid controls, but now it has them. As a bonus it came out on every platform, so you can have HD ROYGBIV all up in your face!

Title: Sonic Generations

Why it was over looked: Because people might have been traumatized by the previous 3D Sonic games (except Colors).

Why you should play it: It's a really good Sonic game, the stages are fun and it's less glitchy/wonky than the other 3D Sonics.

Sometimes I wonder if the only people who click on these topics are those who have likely played or considered these in the 1st place.

Mortal Kombat

Why it was over looked: School was getting pretty crazy and I was already playing SSF4 and MvC3.

Why you should play it: I put a lot of time into MK3 on my Saturn as a kid and this was their return to the old 2D games.

Ghost Trick

Why it was overlooked: Relatively niche DS game releasing 2 months before its successor.

Why you should play it: It's a unique linear adventure game from the Phoenix Wright guy. Has an awesomely charming story and characters, interesting "puzzle" based gameplay, a godly soundtrack and beyond godly animation. I liked Phoenix Wright, but I LOVED Ghost Trick.

Catherine

Why it was overlooked: Niche sexy Atlus game.

Why you should play it: Catherine is just one of those games that blends many genres together in a way that makes it virtually impossible to sound appealing when describing it. But when you actually try it out, you find yourself in a crazy action/puzzle/sim/thing that is as tense as it is addictive. Definitely not for everyone since it's a major departure from, well, anything! I'd put it in the same category as Killer 7 in the sense that it's literally nothing like anything you've played before it.

i should probably play skyrim, but i don't think ill get to it this year

Puzzle game of the year for me. It was really intense, and I totally agree that describing it to people almost instantly shuts them off, lol.

It's de Blob so you'd have ROYGBIB up in your face.

Bulletstorm.

Seriously people rent it, buy it, or catch it on a Steam sale coming up, but the game was seriously an awesome experience.

-Great art direction
-Awesome characters
-and one of the best sniper rifles in a game period.

Catherine

Why it was over looked: Possibly passed off as an erotic game without substance since screenshots of the gameplay can be confusing (ie. blocks, dudes talking in a bar, guy texting on his phone, etc.)

Why you should play it: An extremely solid puzzle game with a good amount of variety and depth that consecutively presents gimmicks with each stage. This game is for those who value the challenge of taking in information, processing it quickly, and producing an action that will keep you alive.

Love is over.

s1nza2x.jpg

Why it was over looked: Because Grasshopper has a niche history of buggy games that divide audiences, and EA gave up marketing before they even started.

Why you should play it: Hilarious writing and deliriously insane characters push forward a genuinely enjoyable 'road trip' action story. Mikami's magic touch makes for combat and encounters that channel Resident Evil 4 more than any other game this gen. It's not perfect, but it's good old fashioned violent fun from start to finish, never skipping a beat.

s21uld7.jpg

Why it was over looked: THQ fucked the marketing and nobody really asked for it. At first glance it doesn't look like anything special, and Blue Tongue didn't exactly have a reputable name.

Why you should play it: Whining about the lack of colourful platformers on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3? Pick up de Blob 2, dummy. Solid platforming and puzzles, clean, vibrant graphics (that support 3D), tight controls, plenty of content, and a bitchin' groovey soundtrack. Plenty of style and identity to make the characters and world memorable.

s3zdb4c.jpg

Why it was over looked: Because you people don't pay attention to small time indy releases on PC.

Why you should play it: It's a surprisingly addictive blend of poker and role playing, with a dash of Magic: The Gathering. Easy to learn, yet plenty tactful in battle mechanics, with a fun, accessible campaign. It's the kind of game you boot up when you want something quick and enjoyable to play, and end up playing longer than intended. And its cheap as chips on Steam. Buy it.

s1amx8z.jpg

Why it was over looked: Because nobody owns a 3DS, and ya'll are haters.

Why you should play it: Monster Games proved they 'get' addictive, score based arcade gameplay with Excite Truck and Excite Bots. Pilotwings Resort is no different. A bit light on content, but plenty of replay value if you're one of those people who loves polishing up performance to score maximum points. Gorgeous, clean graphics and arguably the best use of 3D On the system, coupled with great controls, and you've got yourself a stew. My most played game on the system.

s2wfyx1.jpg

Why it was over looked: It's not Gears of War.

Why you should play it: It's not Gears of War, because it's not made for pussies. Simple, chaotic blood guzzling action right to the bone. No cover system what-so-ever with the campy 'regenerating health' system tethered to execution kills instead. Wanna heal? You're going to have to grab that chainsword and get into the thick of it. Stupid fun that shouldn't be missed by any action fan.

s14zb2r.jpg

Why it was over looked: Unappealing at first glance. Too much bro?

Why you should play it: Calls upon the brotherly renegade manliness of 80's films, and the run-and-gun shooting of old PC games, with some modern frills for good measure. Extremely solid campaign with memorable characters, laugh-out-loud dialogue, and an excellent blend of intense, cinematic set pieces with interactive gameplay. Original setting and tons of colour breath much needed life into the typical brown/grey war is hell nonsense plaguing the genre. Never takes itself too seriously.

I've played everything from the OP except for forza 4. Honestly think they are all mediocre at best and should be skipped unless 5/10$ sale or in the case of DCUO free now.

Dragon Age 2

Yeah yeah shit mountain and reused environments and a BAD ending. Still better than the majority of Wrpgs out there.

MW3

Just because idiot devs try to copy cat the series, and Bobby Kotick is a jerk, doesn't mean that they don't make the best roller coaster ride fps campaigns and great MP

You Don't Know Jack

Best Trivia/party game this gen imo.
