Underrated games of 2011 you didn't play, but should have

Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny

Why it was overlooked
- It's like Zelda with farming!

Why you should play it
- It's like Zelda with farming!

Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny

Why it was overlooked
- It's like Zelda with farming!

Why you should play it

I was interested in this game. Would you say the combat hold up? It struck me as too simplistic. Certainly I don't expect Devil May Cry out of it but from videos it looked closer to Dynasty Warriors then Zelda

Title:
Infamous Festival of Blood

Why it was over looked:
- Stand alone game many thought was DLC for Infamous 2
- 3+ gig game you need to download
- Overshadowed by bigger fall releases

Why you should play it:
It is a cheap game at $10 but since its built off infamous 2 it has all the visuals and polish of a full retail release. Flying felt great, progression was nice and speedy and I had more fun collecting stuff in this then pretty much any other game. At 3 to 4 hours it was the perfect bite sized game.

Why you shouldn't play it:
- Extremely poor final boss battle
- Returns to one boring section several times
- Playing it the week of Halloween was part of the fun

Also, I'll echo Two Worlds II

Isn't this the fastest selling game in the history of PSN?

So decided to take a chance and get Shadows of the Damned after the recommendations in this thread and have to say its been fantastic so far!

They're not great, but no where near the amount in 360

PS3 - 360 (2:57)

Wow, I had heard the loading times were slow on 360, but that's literally 90 seconds of loading. 90 SECONDS. PS3 version requires just 15 seconds. How the f*ck did they think it was acceptable to release the game with loading times that slow?! Wasn't it released on 360 first anyways (by a few weeks)?! No wonder people ignored the game.

I'd imagine this is the result of whatever compression they had to use to fit it within the XBLA size limits.

Title:
Bionic Commando Rearmed 2

Why it was over looked:
Unless you were actually interested in the game you probably knew nothing about it since the marketing was non-existant, shitty Capcom PSN drm, and people just aren't interested in BC.

Why you should play it:

- Some of the best level design I've seen in a 2.5D game, encouraging exploration and replaying levels.
- SO MANY moves at your disposal since the beginning of the game, while also gaining more as you play as you find upgrades.
- Beautiful graphics for a 2.5D game: COLORS *gasp*! tasteful motion blur, and amazing lighting and explosion effects.
- Same/Split-Screen Co-Op works really well.
- Swinging as your main way of transportation is sublime.
- The music is terrific; Simon Viklund is a genius.

I know I'm going to sound like a shill, but PLEASE buy this game! I need more Bionic Commando games in my life, this amazing franchise just can't die ;(

Need For Speed: The Run

Why it was over looked:
Made by the NFS studio with the worst track record, released in the worst month for new releases, terrible advertising focussing on QTEs and story-line, reviews pointed to a '2 hour campaign', scripted events, odd design choices, inferior graphics to Hot Pursuit seen as tech-demo for DICE.

Why you should play it:
Some of the best adrenaline-fuelled racing action this year, robust and addictive multiplayer, graphics look great in motion, absolutely huge selection of cars that handle respectably and solidly, challenges make up for the short campaign. It's also ludicrously fun. Unfortunately, it won't even make it to 'sleeper hit' status.

The Witcher 2 is from 2011 right?

If so, The Witcher 2.

I want to play this game on Max/ultra/Damn Settings one day. It's the only game I really want to play but I can't!

Why it was over looked:
I think it wasn't.

Why you should play it:
Because it seems awesome and have a great soundtrack .

I plan to pick up Bulletstorm at some point, as its been nagging me from the corner of my peripherals for some time now.

But my recommendations would be:

Space Marine

Yeah its simplistic, yeah it lacks the depth of the Dawn of War games, but god damned if it isn't simple combat bliss against teeming hordes. The very highest points reached by a solid Firefight or Horde match are the baseline for this game. Just a bloody good time all around.

Lord of the Rings: War in the North.

Its no Skyrim, but its the best damned co-op hack and slash loot game I've played this gen. It also helps that I'm a huge fan of the lore and this isn't just some other game coated with LOTR trappings. And unlike other LOTR games there are new areas to explore and some interesting spins on the formula. I loved my time beating down on trolls for lootstuffs and honor and look forward to going back (and new game+).

Crysis 2

Not exactly underhyped, but considering all the shitastic triple-A shooter campaigns we've had this year it might be high time for people to see what a decent campaign actually looks like.

RAGE

Why it was overlooked: Launch issues on PC, misunderstandings about the kind of game it is, and BIG games landing near its release.

Why you should play it: Outstandingly smooth 60 fps on both consoles, runs well on very modest PCs and has great animation and character models. The campaign is lengthy and combat is a whole lot of fun with some of the best gunplay this entire generation. The most satisfying shotgun since FEAR.

Totes. Game got a bad rap from a lot of folks, but it was easily my favorite FPS this year, probably the last few years really.

If it wasn't overlooked, it isn't for this thread.

The OP is super weird though so I can understand the confusion. When I think overlooked I think of like, DSiware or maybe some niche PSP game. The OP includes a bunch of blockbusters that sold well and had giant threads filled with discussion.

Since Shadows of the Damned, El Shaddai, Child of Eden, and Catherine (arguable not underrated, but my GOTY) were all covered I'll go for:

Bit.Trip.Complete.

Why it was overlooked: (which also become why you should play it) You tell me. It is a great value with six games and a soundtrack included. Maybe everyone who cares already played them in downloadable form? It's retro without being retrograde, as challenging as you wish it to be, and just plain fun. Fun as in pick up any old time and not worry about where you were/what was happening in the story/whether you got rusty at or forgot the controls or anything of that nature. Great games in their own right and a great palette-cleanser after between all the monstrous cinematic games we're being bombarded with.

Get it while it's hot.

After Brink, BulletStorm was probably one of the worst games I've played this year, for many reasons.

The FPS genre continues it's descent ...

Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny

Why it was overlooked
- It's like Zelda with farming!

Why you should play it
- It's like Zelda with farming!

Winner !

For me, most of the games I didn't play but wanted to was because they didn't come to the PC. Shadows of the Damned, Trenched/Iron Brigade (Hopeful this one will come to PC soon-ish), 360/PS3/Wii exclusives.

Partially my fault for only having a 1680x1050 22in monitor for gaming, but 360 games look really bad on it. Setting the 360 to that resolution letterboxes games so they're even smaller. Setting it to a lower resolution lets it take up the whole screen, but it stretches the picture. I have an adapter that lets me play the Wii on my monitor, but that's even worse. At least my PC is powerful enough to play some of my Wii/Gamecube games with Dolphin.

The jump from 360-to-PC was almost as big as SD-to-HD was for me. I played so many games on my 360 that I can hardly stand to look at anymore.

Child of Eden

Why it was over looked: Zero advertising from Ubisoft, mainly. To be fair, it's not the easiest game to advertise, but they should've done something. Also the fact that it cost $50 for a game that only takes a couple hours to beat, and misunderstanding that you can only enjoy the game if you're playing on Kinect.

Why you should play it: If you liked Rez, you have absolutely no reason to not play Child of Eden. It is a fantastic sequel with some absolutely amazing visuals that simply couldn't be done around the time Rez came out. Also the game plays great on a controller, and you can find it on 360 for 20 bucks or less now. Go for it!

Shadows of the Damned

Why It Was Overlooked: Some of the worst trailers I've seen for getting across the true appeal of the game. All of them made it look like the game was trying to be serious and didn't focus on the hilarious and tongue in cheek nature of the game.

Why You Should Play It: It has some of the best written and funniest dialogue I've ever heard in a game. The combat is fun, especially once you start getting the weapon upgrades and can really mix it up and wreck demons. The soundtrack is also fantastic. Not the most polished game ever but fun and quirky in the best way possible.

Glad the OP had Resistance 3. Best PS3 exclusive FPS by far. I wish I could play Xenoblade but I'm in the US and can't afford import prices. It's been a long time since I've played a good JRPG.

These are my two.

Does LittleBigPlanet 2 count as overlooked? I picked it up earlier this week for $30, and it's pretty great. So much content in the form of user-generated levels. Looking forward to sinking some time into the level creator and working on my own stages.

Where Is My Heart

why it was overlooked: it's a Playstation mini

why you should play it: smart puzzler with platforming elements, icy electronic soundtrack, difficulty ramps up beautifully, makes you a better person.

How people can hate on Modern Warfare 3 yet prop up garbage like Space Marine is a mystery. The level design and AI is completely abysmal and is far worse than anything in MW3.

Hunted Demons Forge - I think it's pretty good. I did have a chance to play it briefly but it wasn't bad as the reviews make it out to be.

Shadows of the Damned - I know a lot of people say it's a fun RE4-styled game. It had no marketing and basically had a stealth release. When it came out I had no idea it was even released!

Goldeneye 007 Reloaded - The game was released during the same time frame as MW3, Uncharted 3, and Zelda. The game is a really good remake that's NOT just a HD port of the Wii version but a full remake for HD consoles. I think a lot of people don't even know that. It's worth it for the single player alone and for it being 60 frames per second.

Rayman Origins - The game is amazing and beautiful, but the price tag and falling into a similar trap like Goldeneye Reloaded with its release date next to other big name games, may have hurt it.

Solatorobo Red the Hunter & Aliens Infestations - Probably two of the better games in the DS library that came out too late. Even though it's better late than never, I think these games were more overlooked because of the 3DS and that they're already niche games. But to anyone who has a 3DS/DS, I highly recommend these games. Solatorobo is a simple but really good adventure RPG definitely worthwhile for JRPG fans, and Aliens Infestation is a really good Metro-vania styled game set in the Aliens universe.

Lost in Shadow - This is one of the most unique platformers of this gen that probably got overlooked. It's probably one of the better third party Wii games. It's $15 at Best Buy right now. If you can find it, it's a good game to have.

Radiant Historia - Definitely one of the best DS RPGs. I'm just glad that this was localized.

Ghost Recon Shadow Wars & Cave Story 3D - Two of the better 3DS games. Ghost Recon SW is surprisingly good. I hope it sells really well on ios and gets the credit it deserves. As for Cave Story, I know there's a million version of this game, but the 3DS one is the best one, IMO.

There's probably more I'm leaving out but these come to mind.

Okamiden:

Why it was Overlooked:
Because it came out at the end of the DS's lifecycle when everyone was already getting hyped for the 3DS

Why you should play it:
Because it's a great ride. Cel-shading is a great fit for the DS, and the game has a great sense of humor to it.

Blocks That Matter:

Why it was Overlooked:
Because it's an indie game by a dev no one's heard of

Why you should play it:
Because the gameplay is great. The devs describe it in the achievements as a combination between Tetris, Minecraft, and Boulder Dash, but I'd say it's more like that Block Dude game everyone played on their TI-83's in high school.

Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland

Why it is was overlooked: It's prequel, Atelier Rorona, got repetitive and boring at times; The game star's a very young and colorful anime girl with the TEEN rating stamped on a PS3 box which may have affected its appeal to any broader base beyond anime and game fans; Due to disinterest, the game's western release went largely unnoticed among most gamers on the internet.

Why it should be played: Nonlinear gameplay; They're many paths and choices the player can make, some of the which will affect the game's cutscene events or net the player one of many possible endings; The music is catchy and memorable; The game has a time-limit that is long enough to keep the player comfortable for a good portion of the game and then raises the tension as end game approaches; There is a new game plus to carry over equipment and money for mulitple playthroughs to achieve different events, alter some, and acquire a new ending; the new Super Mario Bros. 3 like world map makes exploring Arland feel authentic; item creation is fun; the late game battles are fun; the game overall is lots of fun.

Aliens Infestation

Why it was overlooked
GAME OVER DS GAME OVER

Why you should play it

First, are you the kind of person who moans about the lack of new Metroidvania-like titles? Cool, then you'll really need it. Are you a fan of the Alien movies? Then you want it as well. It has a lot of references and it even has a knifetrick minigame! But seriously, a neat little game which can be picked up for about $/€ 20. Boss fights are sucky, but man the rest of the games makes up for that. Buy it.
Should have been a PSN/XBL game ;(

Surprised I don't see Shadows of the Damned...

Thank you! I was going to do this myself if no one else had. And you probably presented it better anyway. :)

Wanderlust

Why it was over looked: Indie pc game not released on steam and received practically no advertising. Made with GameMaker.

Why you should play it: Best indie rpg I've played this year. It's reminiscent of games that came out during the SNES era. Also has 4 player online coop.

Strania

Why it was overlooked:
Shooting game on XBLA. Untested (no prior arcade release) and looks kinda ugly.

Why you should play it:
It's pretty well designed and enjoyable. Lots of replay value for $10.

strania also has robots instead of lolis. worth the price of admission just to support that I say.

I support Motorstorm Apocalypse, Ghost Trick, Child of Eden, Outland, Pixeljunk Sidescroller, BCR2, Sword and Sorcery and a lot of Minis games.

For what I saw in the demo, Rayman Origins is cool but doesn't deserve 60€. Similar or better 2D platformers are being sold at a 25% of this price.

Lord Of The Rings: War In The North - Otherwise known as: The Underrated game of 2011

Why it was missed:
a) Previous LOTR games have been a let down
b) "Hey look its one of those licensed games. skip"
c) It got released between many other big Fall games in 2011

Why you need to play this game:
a) Some of the best couch co-op to be had for RPG Fans, but still fun solo.
b) Loot. Those who enjoy collecting loot and progressively better gear should not miss.
c) Its a whole new story built within the LOTR universe. Its great because your not going to know exactly how this one ends. Having finished it, I think its a pretty good story too, with plenty of drama and writing that feels fit for the universe. Its not going to win any awards mind.

You play as a new character in the universe and get to meet some of the most famous characters and creatures from the movies/books. Saying too much is a bit spoilerific, but let me just say its nice when you have these litte moments that tie your quest into that of the original fellowship.

CONS:
Its a bit buggy, and the voices of lead characters from the movies are not those we all know and love. So its a little jarring.

OVERALL:
This is far from the 5/10 scores that some reviewers gave this. If you've been hankering for anything half decent thats LOTR related, you really cant go wrong here.
Oh and its got New Game plus ;) so I'll be going through again soon.

Driver: San Francisco

Why it was missed?
Previous games in the series were disappointments, not marketed well, ridiculous premise, other games released around the same time received much more attention, reviews were positive but not amazing

Why you should play it?
The ridiculous premise! The shift feature is fun and unique. In a few events, you can win races by taking people out using shift rather than actually racing. (It's more fun and less dumb than it sounds.) It also provides a method of fast traveling around the map, a feature welcome in any open world game. The story, characters and music have the vibe of a wacky 70's action film. The premise allows the game to have fun scenarios that cannot exist in games that are grounded in reality. The multiplayer is sort of chaotic, but interesting for a couple of hours. And though the game technically has an online pass, anyone can play online because Ubisoft fucked up the codes so they just opened online play to everyone.

Ghost Trick

Why it was overlooked: Relatively niche DS game releasing 2 months before its successor.

Why you should play it: It's a unique linear adventure game from the Phoenix Wright guy. Has an awesomely charming story and characters, interesting "puzzle" based gameplay, a godly soundtrack and beyond godly animation. I liked Phoenix Wright, but I LOVED Ghost Trick.

Catherine

Why it was overlooked: Niche sexy Atlus game.

Why you should play it: Catherine is just one of those games that blends many genres together in a way that makes it virtually impossible to sound appealing when describing it. But when you actually try it out, you find yourself in a crazy action/puzzle/sim/thing that is as tense as it is addictive. Definitely not for everyone since it's a major departure from, well, anything! I'd put it in the same category as Killer 7 in the sense that it's literally nothing like anything you've played before it.

+1
(Catherine's multiplayer is blast with friends. Just be complete dicks to each other, it is wonderful.)

Title
game_hard-corps-uprising.png

Why it was over looked:
Japanese PSN/XBLA title released in March when everyone was hyping over the summer releases like Portal 2, MK, etc. It also had very shoddy DLC practice and very little advertising. The xbox360 version had some bad loading times. Some people were turned off by the challenge.

Why you should play it:
- Beautiful hand drawn sprites
- Greatest Soundtrack of 2011
- Awesome, fun, 2D run and gun game design with a bountiful number of boss fights.
- Intuitive and responsive controls and meticulously balanced to ensure that it was a very challenging game yet never the game's fault for your death.
- Robust upgrade "rising" system to alleviate the difficulty

+1
(At least some of the DLC for the game is worth it if you can get a good deal on it. Sayuri in particular changes things up by a lot.)

EDIT: +1 to Frozen Synapse too.

What I was going to say has been said. I haven't played Serious Sam 3 or Anno 2070 yet, but I am thinking both need more attention as well. SS3's thread is like 4 pages? For shame, PC GAF.

EDIT:
Beautiful visuals, beautiful music, muddied story, minimalistic gameplay with surprising depth; no other game is like this on the market.
Tied with Duke Nukem Forever as the worst game of the year. Trash.
That about wraps that up.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Why it was overlooked: My bias against Square Enix made me think that the game would lean too heavily on epic prerendered cutscenes, and I saw it at E3 and thought it looked horrible.

Why I should play it: Extra credits did a review of it that made the content sound super interesting, so I've been meaning to check it out. Plus, hopefully it's nonlinear and old school in its gameplay, so that might be cool as well.

Wouldn't even come close to putting it with DNF. El Shaddai is the art game of 2011. Whether or not you have an issue with that is up to you, I guess. I had a blast.

s1nza2x.jpg

Why it was over looked: Because Grasshopper has a niche history of buggy games that divide audiences, and EA gave up marketing before they even started.

You know it's kinda sad because I see Shadows of The Damned as Grasshopper selling out for the cash, but not even getting the cash. EA pulled a fast on them.

Go Vacation!

Why it was overlooked: Because it looks like shovelware. It really, really looks like shovelware.

Why you should play it: For a game that looks like shovelware, it's really not half bad. You get four huge, very well-done environments to roam around in and find over 50 minigames to play. There's even Motionplus lightsaber fights. If you don't want to play minigames, you can simply explore the four resorts and discover hidden treasures and unlock achievements which in turn unlock furniture for you to customize your own personal villa. Like Animal Crossing, but way more customizable. Plus there are some nods to Ridge Racer. Basically it's Wii Sports Resort on steroids plus Animal Crossing. Of course, it has its issues, mostly annoying transportation ones, but if you can find it cheap it's totally worth it.

I came to post Shadows of the Damned too but see it's been mentioned a few times.

Why it was overlooked: Media reviews don't seem to favour it too well.

Why you should play it: My mates say it is awesome.

Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland

This right here.

Skydrift

Why it was overlooked: Just a downloadable with no real marketing support. I believe Bloodrayne came out the same week and folks were paying attention to that.

Why you should play it: Because there aren't enough plane-based arcade racers, and this one is ace. A variety of objectives, weapons, and tracks means it has as much content as, say, a full retail game like Motorstorm.

And beaten on SpaceChem. Both are on my top 10 for the year.

Why it was over looked: THQ fucked the marketing and nobody really asked for it. At first glance it doesn't look like anything special, and Blue Tongue didn't exactly have a reputable name.

Why you should play it: Whining about the lack of colourful platformers on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3? Pick up de Blob 2, dummy. Solid platforming and puzzles, clean, vibrant graphics (that support 3D), tight controls, plenty of content, and a bitchin' groovey soundtrack. Plenty of style and identity to make the characters and world memorable.

.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. De Blob 2 is awesome.

Yeah I tried the demo for this, and it's a cool game.
