Underrated games of 2011 you didn't play, but should have

Catherine

Why it was overlooked: Niche sexy Atlus game.

Why you should play it: Catherine is just one of those games that blends many genres together in a way that makes it virtually impossible to sound appealing when describing it. But when you actually try it out, you find yourself in a crazy action/puzzle/sim/thing that is as tense as it is addictive. Definitely not for everyone since it's a major departure from, well, anything! I'd put it in the same category as Killer 7 in the sense that it's literally nothing like anything you've played before it.

I want to believe you, I really do. But urgh... you're right when you said it is impossible to sound appealing when describing it.

Driver: San Francisco

Why it was missed?
Previous games in the series were disappointments, not marketed well, ridiculous premise, other games released around the same time received much more attention, reviews were positive but not amazing

Why you should play it?
The ridiculous premise! The shift feature is fun and unique. In a few events, you can win races by taking people out using shift rather than actually racing. (It's more fun and less dumb than it sounds.) It also provides a method of fast traveling around the map, a feature welcome in any open world game. The story, characters and music have the vibe of a wacky 70's action film. The premise allows the game to have fun scenarios that cannot exist in games that are grounded in reality. The multiplayer is sort of chaotic, but interesting for a couple of hours. And though the game technically has an online pass, anyone can play online because Ubisoft fucked up the codes so they just opened online play to everyone.

It'll probably win a couple racing GOTYs since there wasn't that much competition this year. Best arcade racer

Ghost Trick

Why it was overlooked: Relatively niche DS game releasing 2 months before its successor.

Why you should play it: It's a unique linear adventure game from the Phoenix Wright guy. Has an awesomely charming story and characters, interesting "puzzle" based gameplay, a godly soundtrack and beyond godly animation. I liked Phoenix Wright, but I LOVED Ghost Trick.
This.
Will buy when I find it cheaper.

Infamous: Festival of Blood

Why was it overlooked? A standalone Infamous downloadable spinoff game available on PSN, released on fucking October 25th, same day/week as Battlefield 3 and it got completely crushed underneath the Fall swarm of huge releases. Also, no marketing.

Why you should play it: Whether you're a fan of Infamous or not, Festival of Blood does so much right. It has 'cool' vampires, interesting mechanics that mix both vampire powers (turning into a flock of bats, Dracula-style, etc) and the normal superhuman Infamous powers, AMAZING atmosphere, and it's just plain, good ol' fun. Seeing Infamous' version of New Orleans celebrating 'Halloween' is an absolute visual and aural treat. It takes everything that Infamous 2 did right and does it even better, while mixing in rich, delicious vampire atmosphere and gameplay. For example, at one point you find out that there's huge, batlike super-vampires going around in the guide of regular humans, but if you use your vampire vision you can spot them out. From that point on, you can stake those motherfuckers and they twist and transform out of their human bodies, revealing themselves to be the monstrous creatures they really are. Fucking. Awesome.

AND IT'S ONLY $10!

How people can hate on Modern Warfare 3 yet prop up garbage like Space Marine is a mystery. The level design and AI is completely abysmal and is far worse than anything in MW3.

You are not good with computer it appears to me.

My vote goes to Space Marine as well.
Solid machanics, great athmophere and a must have for all WH40k fans.
It's linear, has little variety but everything you do makes you feel like a goddam badass Speeehs Mahreen. Also: Yes! No chest high walls!!
I'm one of the few that enjoyed the multplayer a lot. Classes are mostly balanced and there is a horde mode now too which is also a lot of fun.

Lord of the Rings: War in the North.

Why was it overlooked?
Another LOTR game? Bah, no thanks. Middling reviews. Not to mention being sandwiched between Battlefield 3, MW3, and released on the same day as Uncharted 3 there was little hope it would get more than a glance by the press.

Why you should play it
If you enjoyed Champions of Norrath or Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance you'll find Snowblind has brought you a similar hack'n'slash, loot driven experience for this generation of consoles. Fun co-op for you and 1-2 other players to enjoy. Loot. Taking place in an area of Middle-earth that was only briefly mentioned in the books gives Snowblind plenty of latitude so you have your own story rather than replaying the stories that you already know from the LotR universe. Loot. It's also a pretty lengthy experience for consoles nowadays in addition it gives you motivation to play through the New Game+ with your friends. Oh and there's some loot as well.

Best experienced either in splitscreen with a friend in local co-op or online with 1-2 friends.

Professor Layton and the Last Specter

Why was it overlooked?
DS is nearing the end of it's life and it doesn't garner much attention anymore.

Why you should play it
Another great Layton game with a charming story and interesting puzzles.

I was thinking Vanquish because I just got it..but it's a 2010 game

on that note we should make a thread about the underrated/overlooked games of this generation.

Motorstorm Pocky Lips

Why it was overlooked: Japan disaster.

Why you should play it: You drive on roads while things blow up around you. OMG.

Gray Matter

Why was it overlooked?
PC only release but not currently available on Steam. No real marketing, small publisher, niche genre.

Why you should play it
It's one of the best pure point-and-click adventure games in years, created by Jane Jensen of Gabriel Knight fame. Set in modern day Oxford, the gothic locations are detailed and plot goes off in a few interesting directions dealing with neurobiology and magicians and the like. The budget wasn't huge and it shows, but Gray Matter is still nicely done and very much worth playing if you're in the mood for this sort of experience.

Most games I didn't play wasn't because they were underrated by me but because there are to much of them. I just don't buy multiple games anymore. The benefit is that I'll be playing wonderful games for reduced prices.

Actually it was released on 360 too but it plays awful with the controller :(

Treasure Adventure Game

Why was it overlooked?
It looks like another indie platformer with retro graphics. It has a generic name. Unlike other great indie games, it hasn't been mentioned on NeoGAF once.

Why you should play it
It's mash up between Super Mario Bros 2 and Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker. Imagine an open world on a 2D plane with lots of islands where you must find 12 hidden treasures in dungeon-esque levels with bosses and quite a few challenging platforming parts. There are various items to find to aid you in your treasure finding, like a shovel, and lots of smaller hidden treasures to discover. You have instant access to your boat, which you will upgrade in various ways along your journey.
It's free, you can download it here: http://www.robitstudios.com/treasure-adventure-game/
Or check out a trailer of the game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-YvT2y3_I0

It's 4,99 now ( Europe ). Great price for an awesome game!

Maybe you should make a separate thread for this game. I checked out the youtube trailer and it looks pretty good. Downloading it just now.

Have you completed it and if so how long was it?

I haven't completed it, I'm at 30%. Not sure how long the game is. Since it's an open world, discovering the other treasures could take more time than the ones I have so far; the islands you visit the first few hours are not that far from eachother.
I like the game a lot. It's very charming, but I have to say it lacks a little polish in terms of bugs. The game can freeze (only happened once so far) on you for example, so I recommend using every savepoint u come across.
I thought about making a thread about it, but I'm not so good at it and my English isn't too good.

I just finished Aliens: Infestation for the DS and was honestly kind of surprised at how dead the OT was so I thought I'd give it a shout out here. It's a fun 2D action game in the Metroidvania genre that a lot of people around here would probably enjoy. It's definitely not without its flaws but overall I think it's a wonderful addition to your DS/3DS library for $20 or less.

Beat yesterday, and I fully agree with this post. Awesome game.

Yup, I came here to post that. Truly great game, WayForward magic all the way, sadly released in the year of the 3DS on the wrong platform.

Driver San Francisco

Why it was overlooked
Horrible previous entries in the series, dull cover art, poor marketing, game was practically sent to die.

Why you should play it
It's one of the most refreshingly different arcade racers - like a fresh new mix of Need for Speed Most Wanted and Burnout 3. The difficulty is perfectly tuned, with missions tough enough to require another try, but easy enough to make yoy try them "just one more time". There is tons of gameplay variety so even though the game is big it never gets repetitive. The dialogue is incredibly funny and the Life on Mars style plot is brilliantly presented, one of the coolest stories in a game (I loved Silent Hill 2 by the way).

Tl;dr - it's just pure fun

Thread title makes no sense, how can you tell if a game was under rated if you never played it? Also, Fight Night Champion is gimped to holy hell, Round 4 is the right answer. Also, what the fuck is a "dudebro boxer", and why has that lame meme migrated to sports games now? And why did the "M" rating imply that it was a *sigh* dudebro game? Isn't a realistic boxing game always going to be pretty violent?

/Monday morning rant

Sorry OP, no beef, just the term "dudebro", a recommendation of FN Champion over it's vastly superior predecessor and a stupid thread title got my back up this morning!

Came in here to mentions Alien Infestations and:

Kirby Mass Attack

Why was it overlooked?
Released not only months after the 3DS launched, but also in the midst of Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7. Also, it's a Kirby game.

Why you should play it?
Best use of touch-based gameplay yet. Great visuals, great sound. Also, it's a Kirby game.

GAME OVER DS GAME OVER

Why you should play it

First, are you the kind of person who moans about the lack of new Metroidvania-like titles? Cool, then you'll really need it. Are you a fan of the Alien movies? Then you want it as well. It has a lot of references and it even has a knifetrick minigame! But seriously, a neat little game which can be picked up for about $/€ 20. Boss fights are sucky, but man the rest of the games makes up for that. Buy it.

I never even knew about this, just bought it. You happy now? :P

Child of Eden

Why it was over looked: Zero advertising from Ubisoft, mainly. To be fair, it's not the easiest game to advertise, but they should've done something. Also the fact that it cost $50 for a game that only takes a couple hours to beat, and misunderstanding that you can only enjoy the game if you're playing on Kinect.

Why you should play it: If you liked Rez, you have absolutely no reason to not play Child of Eden. It is a fantastic sequel with some absolutely amazing visuals that simply couldn't be done around the time Rez came out. Also the game plays great on a controller, and you can find it on 360 for 20 bucks or less now. Go for it!

I picked this up when it was originally released but never got around to playing it, this weekend I had a quick blast of Rez HD and was left wanting more then all of a sudden I spent most of my weekend playing this game and it is amazing!

I also prefer playing it with a controller rather than using the Kinect.

motorstorm apocalypse... it came with my sony 3d display and i'm generally not a racer guy, but this game is a blast. best racer i've played since burnout revenge.

resistance 3.... best fps i've played this year by far. a unique experience in a very samey genre.

skylanders ....... just fun. it hits a lot of the same notes that kameo did for me. charming and whimsical. my son and i have bonded over this game. be warned you will want more figures.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 (DS)

Why it was over looked: 3DS had already launched, and DQ doesn't have mass appeal yet in outside of Japan.

Why you should play it: The main story is a pretty average RPG, but if the post-game is where it's at. If you're one of those people who loves spending 100+ hours building the best team of monsters ever, you're going to love DQMJ2. And yep, you can battle online.

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (PSP)

Why it was over looked: PSP is dead

Why you should play it: This game is hugely improved over the original. It's alot smoother and user-friendly. If you're looking for an FFT-like SRPG, pick this one up, it's the best of the TO/FFT series.

Cladun X2 (PSP)

Why it was over looked: PSP is still dead

Why you should play it: It's a really fun 2D top-down action RPG with randomly generated dungeons filled with loot. It took me awhile to understand the RPG mechanics, but that didn't matter, because I was having so much fun with the combat system, just beating things up.

Earth Defense Force Insect Armageddon

Why you should play it

I had a lot of fun with the 4 available classes, experimenting with different weapon outfits, and killing ants is always fun. I love that you can destroy all buildings, bridges etc... while saving mankind ;) There is nothing bad I can say about the game... Right length, survival mode, remix mode, nice replayability...

Sorry OP, no beef, just the term "dudebro", a recommendation of FN Champion over it's vastly superior predecessor and a stupid thread title got my back up this morning!

The thread is for people to recommend games THEY PLAYED that most others didn't, and they felt were critically / commercially underrated. Not to randomly recommend games you've heard of in passing. Reading the rest of the thread should have made that clear.

Also, FN Champion *is* dudebro, and I'm specifically talking about the story mode. It's mature and edgy just for the sake of being so. There is no "mature" content outside of excessive cursing here and there. The fact that previous titles were not rated "M" and EA really driving home that this one WAS rated "M" really drive that home. At the same time, the unique scenarios presented in each fight make it a gem of a boxing game. Quite possibly the most interesting and compelling single player boxing experience available, sans the "mature" content.

Assassin's Creed: Recollection

Why it was over looked: Because it's a in a niche genre (Collectible Card Game) an exclusively for iPad. Buying more card packs can turn expensive quick.

Why you should play it: Because it has the best mechanics in a CCG I've ever experienced and by being real time instead of turn based it solves all the problems other CCGs face with online play in a very elegant manner (no more waiting for your opponent to finish his goddamn turn, for example). The first set is well balanced and a lot of fun. Lots of possible winning decks. The use of the AC license gives it a layer polish you don't normally find in iOS games. It's fucking 99 cents.
