the Universal Monster Universe... What are your opinions on it? We know Universal is going for a UMCU with Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolfman, Invisible Man, The Mummy, and probably creature from the Black Lagoon. They are going to be less horror and more... hero like I guess? So what do you think about this and how would you bring these creatures together?

http://moviepilot.com/posts/3976757

looks like we have:

The Mummy movie June 9th 2017 (Tom Cruise attached)

The Wolfman- March 30th 2018 (they are trying to get The Rock to star in this one. Possible Wolfman?)

Van Helsing Movie

Bride of Frankenstien Movie (will be set in present day, and they want Angelina Jolie to direct and star)

Creature from the Black Lagoon Movie. (no date, but they are thinking of getting Scarlett Johanssen to star)

Some untitled movie. (Possibly the "Avengers style movie in 2019 to join up all the monsters to do what? lol i have no clue)

Invisible Man (Johnny Depp is supposed to be starring in this movie)

So what do you think Gaf?

It's funny how Universal had one of the first real cinematic universes with all of their horror properties, but in this day and age I can't see any of this going anywhere. I mean, did their Frankinstein and Dracula movies that came out recently make any waves? If those two can't do it, how can they expect the Creature from the Black Lagoon to do any better?

Even though I have a feeling the ones without tom cruise in them are going to be bad, I'm still really excited their doing a universal monster universe. I love the classics and van helsing is my guilty pleasure but they need hugh jackman back to make it work.

Calling it, The mummy basically will be a serious take on the same story archetype as the brendan fraiser movies, setting up the mummy to be a god like evil entity.

Wolfman is about a good guy who gets turned into a werewolf, fights other werewolves and gets recruited by van helsing in the after credits scene.

Van helsing takes cues from the hugh jackman one but in modern times, pretty much uses frankenstein['s monster] in the same way, wolfman co stars, ends with a stinger showing the bride being created, waking up or otherwise revealing that she exists.

Creature of the black lagoon gets reworked into some sort of mash up of man thing and swamp thing, monstrous champion of nature.

The team up movie revolves around the mummy threatening the whole world so Van helsing recruits both frankenstein monsters, the wolf man and the creature of the black lagoon to stop him. Invisible man joins up in the 2nd or 3rd act as a back door tie in to his solo movie.

Invisible man movie is a monster themed spy movie, after credits stinger is revealing that Dracula is out there plotting something to be the next big bad for the second team up movie.

This sounds like an absolutely awful idea and those attached names do nothing to make it any better. They better hope to get some creative directors behind these films instead of the same old stooges that are studio puppets.

I'd love a new Bride of Frankenstein but Jolie makes it a pass for me if they go that route.

The Rock fighting a werewolf barehanded could be fun.

Creature from the Black Lagoon was always in need of a proper remake so I'd be up for that.

Johnny Depp has the Invisible Man could totally work.

The Mummy looks ok so far.

Val Helsing is of little interest to me unless it's him taking on Dracula.

If Universal was committed to making real horror films I could see these projects being good but if they're just going for Marvel money and making horror-themed superhero movies then they will probably be awful.

I love the originals, but theyve tried to start these up again a few times now. The mummy fell off after a few films, and the rest haven't got any traction.

I'm not expecting this to go anywhere, but we'll see

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
For some reason I always thought these monsters were basically public domain...how does that work exactly?

Like can you freely use the character of Dracula, but could Universal sue you if you brought like him, Frankenstein, and the Wolf Man together since that could be seen as infringing on their franchise?

I honestly think the idea of a team-up between the classic monsters is an awesome idea, I actually have one I've worked on for a few years I want to possibly turn into a project one day, but it sucks if that's rendered impossible now by what will probably be a shallow attempt to capture the Marvel audience.

I fricken love Hugh Jackman Van Helsing. I watch it at every opportunity. Dracula's ham makes that movie.

Was just talking about this the other day with someone. Wondering if Dracula Untold is going to be part of the universe as originally intended or if those plans got scrapped when that movie didn't do amazing at the box office.

Also, this all sounds terrible, but a dumb wolfman movie with The Rock is something I'd watch. I'll be skipping the rest.

Little off topic, but I made my character in Bloodborne look like Hugh jackman because of that movie.

Also I hope they keep the mummy series a bit campy, I think they would work better that way. I expect some bad ass stunts by Cruise in them too.

Make them cheap and take risks with directors with lesser known actors (Walton Goggins, Giovanni Ribisi, Cillian Murphy) and put money into marketing.

Then I'm in.

I quote the intro when it's on and annoyed everyone else in the room.

The first Mummy is actually pretty horrifying if you remove the camp.

I think that would be sensible to conclude. It wouldn't be illegal, given the public domain aspect, but it wouldn't be worth the potential court time.

Universal did used to be rather litigious back in the day regarding the Monsters, to the point where Hammer had to go over their script for Curse of Frankenstein to make sure it didn't retain any plot elements that Universal could try to claim as their own, along with making sure that Christopher Lee's makeup took nothing from Jack Pierce's work on Karloff.

They're already looking to do a Bride Of, so why not get Frankenstein in there too.

I believe Frankenstein's Monster is public domain, but the Karloff look (green skin, bolts in neck, scar, flat-top head) is copyrighted. It's why Frankenstein looks like a fat piece of shit in Van Helsing.

The characters are public domain but anything added in the movies as well as their iconic looks are all copyrighted.

That was a creative decision because that film was made by Universal Studios who own the copyright for Frankenstein's look, and who were in fact trying to rejuvenate their monster movie IP's with Van Helsing.

Hmmmm i'm wanting this to be awesome, but the Rock? & Scarlet Johansen? At least they are box office draws.

Johnny Depp is fine, Tom Cruise? well theres not much we can change about that, so fingers crossed for the Mummy.

I think they were going to try this with Stephen Sommers movies back in the early 2000's with the Mummy first and then Van Helsing, both fun movies, and some good designs i wish they did it then, a combined Universe but i dont know what happened, maybe the audience werent interested back then, the Underworld series keeps going though so there must be some audience there, just will they be into this?

I hate the fact that they take place in the modern day. They should be period adventure stories (Like Indiana Jones and the previous The Mummy movies) or gothic horror (Penny Dreadful, classic monster movies).

Cant have a comedy scene with Rock wolfman taking a selfie and doing peoples eyebrow in classic times...

I'm pretty certain Dracula will be in Van Helsing, and Frankenstein will be in Bride of Frankenstein so there's no need to make individual films.

Completely agree, they should've got somebody like Guillermo Del Toro to produce and put it all together.

DeathoftheEndless

Crashing this plane... with no survivors!
If they aren't horror movies, I'm not really interested. The monsters are sympathetic sometimes, but they should usually be the villains in the story. Any crossovers should be about them beating the hell out of each other, not teaming up to fight a greater evil.
