Unreal Engine 5 revealed! Real-Time Prototype Gameplay Demo Running On PS5

I know HZD2 won't be using UE5 (at least I assume not) but still just the talk of draw distances and elimination of distracting LOD pop-in next gen gets me very antsy in my pantsy. I always notice the little details like a bush popping up 10 feet in front of me in an otherwise gorgeous game. HZD is gorgeous but definitely has LOD pop in all over the place, as most games this gen do of that scale. Can't wait to see the leap in this area

Bring On Da Next Gen

Sony didn't DO anything today. Epic did. Sony had nothing to do with the Unreal Engine 5. Sony paid Epic money to not mention competition. That is what happened today. Everything you saw today will be on all major platforms next generation.

I was talking about marketing strategies. I don't doubt Series X can match the graphics (but maybe not the load times).

But what we saw was running on PS5, not Xbox. Just like the games on Inside Xbox were running on Series X, not PS5.

That doesn't mean they can't match each other, but those are the first impressions each company chose to put out there.

WOW!!! What I’ve been waiting for for ages 🔥🔥🔥
You wont see visuals like that in any next gen console game.

Any game you can imagine on ps5 can run and look better on xbox series x. Its so simple even someone like you can grasp it.

Did Sony strike some sort of deal with Epic to have this shown off on PS5 first?

But the answer is pretty simple, a new console generation is coming up and having the engine tied to the generational shift is beneficial to marketing the engine; also console vendors might be interested in having their system tied to early demonstrations of tech demos. This could absolutely run on a PC (and naturally XSX, because it is basically a slightly stronger PS5), but PC does not carry the "next gen" flair.

Good spin. But they could run it the same way on PC. And say the same things: coming to both consoles.
Like they always did before.

You're the one with the conspiracy theories buddy not me I asked for proof of your claims and you gave me nothing , better to stick to the topic of the thread instead of throwing baseless claims around .

Looks amazing but there are some things here that fire bullshit alert in me:

- frame-rate was atrocious. Sub 30fps for a tech demo. No way real game looking like that would even be 10fps.
- despite claiming that every light is real yellow light coming out of device at the end didn't gave any light
- i don't see how this can fit into VRAM if they are really using raw assets. For those who don't know some assets can be 10-20GBs each let alone scenes which could be terrabytes of data.

Imho demo was not actually on PS5 but on some professional PC with 20-30GB of VRAM.

And for those who want to say "you don't know anyhing" etc. UE4 also was presented with tech demo that was running "real time on next gen consoles" that in the end was cut down in scope and its main feature global illumination was also cut out demo also went back from 60fps to sub 30fps.

original UE4 tech-demo

console version of that tech-demo:

I think is likely due to the deal SONY has with them.

PCIExpress 4.0 is rather new. There are already SSDs with 5GB/s and there should be better ones in following months. Both new consoles aren't using some space tech, just bog standard PCIExpress4.0.

Are you really comparing this to a gameplay demo?

It wasn't gameplay demo because it was techdemo. Techdemo =/= game.

Those big anime eyes :ROFLMAO:

I might be crazy but after looking at the crazy ass world they created for the tech demo when they panned back to her like that I actually thought she did not look good. Goes to show that they are pulling off some crazy shit.

Yes. I’m sure this tells THE WHOLE story.

Remember when the original Unreal Engine 4 demo looked better on PC? IIRC that lighting model in the PC demo was entirely replaced with the one in the PS4 version.

The character is not even better than current gen top tier characters tbh.

But then again, i watched the video at 1080p, maybe the 4k version has far more details.

So you want to tell me, what Epic actually wants to do with this demo is say (without saying it) "this is only possible on PS5, not XSX and PC"? Talk about spin....

Looking great, finally something with a more "next gen" look than what has been shown so far.

Also LOL at there being more gameplay from..."unreal engine 5" than the new Assassins Creed

I think there's more excitement about the first reveal of something running on the PS5, than there is about seeing another high end PC demo. Especially if it was running on a 2080 Ti or something.

In fact if it was a PC demo, I bet we'd see the usual suspects claiming that consoles could never display this level of fidelity. (Hmmm, I wonder what happened to those guys?)

meh. this is just a tech demo, not gameplay.

Well it's the same thing as the HellBlade 2 demo.

It really just meant to give us a rough idea of what games will look like on the PS5. Thankfully the demo was done on an actual console instead of a PC which is something that Epic has done in the past.

Let me tell you what Sony did and does for all developers as does Microsoft.

They provide the dev kit
They provide the necessary documentation that allow Epic to make their engine run on PS5/XSX
They provide the expertise and support.

What do you think happens, Dev kits just magically appear at Epic and they automatically know how to properly make use of it? They provide software, tools, profilers and programming support/expertise.

And I can assure you they did not pay for Epic not to mention competition. They chose to align their debut of Unreal Engine 5 on consoles with PS5 just like they did with Unreal Engine 4 on PS4. Not everything is some kind of money grab. Also Tim does not like Microsoft very much. Lol

As a 3D noob when this comes out and if it's accessible for hobbyists I could just throw in Zbrush models straight from the software and dick around with real time lighting like a mad scientist?

No. Not at all: "the easiest platform to get that kind of performance fast is PS5".

Why are you doing Sony's marketing for them in a thread discussing Epic's UE5 demo running on a PS5 devkit for reasons anybody not fighting with a dog in the console warrior race would assume is down to a friendly marketing deal like how these companies have always done in the past?

Just chill and enjoy the demo for what it is, bro.

DF confirmed it to be accurate. 1440/30

Meh, I'll live. Devs do what devs gotta do. And it's just a demo; if it were a game going into full-blown development I bet they could optimize things even further to hit higher clocks and maybe a somewhat higher resolution while keep the same level of detail (or maybe slightly increase it).

Anyway this demo basically made this week in next-gen anticipation worth it xD.

Is that legit or are you joking?

I mean, I personally don't mind; higher resolutions usually hold back on graphical detail by and large anyway. But c'mon, 30 FPS? <sigh>

Still hoping we get majority 60 FPS games this gen like with 6th gen. 🤞
It is dynamic resolution if I’m not wrong from 1440p to 2160p.
