Unreal Engine 5 revealed! Real-Time Prototype Gameplay Demo Running On PS5

Did Sony strike some sort of deal with Epic to have this shown off on PS5 first?

See below. Sony paid Epic to a show UE5 on PS5 and let Tim be a marketer for the console. It's why the entire thing is about PS5.

As for Microsoft’s Xbox Series X, Sweeney isn’t saying the new Xbox won’t be able to achieve something similar; both are using custom SSDs that promise blazing speeds. But he says Epic’s strong relationship with Sony means the company is working more closely with the PlayStation creator than it does with Microsoft on this specific area.

Just remember this was a UE5 tech demo made to show off how good graphics can be on UE5, hense the stuttery 30fps 1440p quality. Remember that when UE5 games start coming a year or two from now, and dont look close to this demo. All we will hear is 'lazy devs', or 'shit devs' etc.

True but this generation is the closest consoles will be towards being able to maintain that fidelity. SSDs, top level gpus, cpus. Previously, these tech demos have been done on PCs and then presented in video form while consoles would release with a tenth of that pc's power. No longer.

and that UE3 video didn't actually show real time gameplay. this actually showed that. i will say, the UE3 demo reminded me a lot of what we got in Batman Arkham series. maybe each generation we're tapping into the full potential of the previous UE's generation?

Another disappointment from Jeff and the whole industry. Show us a damn next gen game already.

Unreal always has killer demos. Remember the one for PS3 era and PS4 era.

If there is one thing you can count on is Epic delivering an EPIC demo.

The difference here is what's being demonstrated not just being a bunch of effects at maximum precision and assets at the largest size. The truly impressive aspect is the implications for development speed and pipelining.

Uh, no offense, but I think the head of AMD would be more knowledgeable about what it is and isn't than you.

Of course, you could say that she's inclined to do deceptive marketing, but I think that's unlikely in this case.

That poster was being sarcastic, but in a snarky way to make fun of people supposedly trying to say PS5 is RDNA1 when no one was doing anything of the sort in the thread.

Basically they were trying to stir up drama through agitation and insinuating something was happening that wasn't happening in the thread and therefore there was zero reason for them to do it other than trying to start something themselves.

3 or 4? Let's hope for 1 or 2 ;)
I was trying to be realistic I guess. Temper my expectations. Obviously the sooner the better.

Do you think developers have already had their hands on UE5? I don't know how these things work. Maybe they are already licensing it before they showcased it to the public.

What does this mean for the Slipspace Engine, though?

Nevermind, that tweet means UE5 isn't available to developers yet?

Is it possible that games that come out using UE4 could be patched mid development to run on UE5?

I wouldn't jump to conclusions though. It's a playable demo but still a demo. Who knows how much effort actually went into crafting this demo. How viable this is for some independent studio? Most big publishers use their own engines anyway.

I'm failing to see how this is exciting. The flying section is somewhat impressive. I'll watch it again on my 65 in 4k tv later, but this old gamer is becoming less and less impressed with graphics with each console generational leap. I guess it's bound to happen the better the VQ gets.

Gutted that Final Fantasy 7 remake came out before UE5, can you imagine how much better all that Midgar rubble and debris would look using this new model/lod system!

Extremely bland.

I bet with you the first Naughty Dog game made for the next gen is going to look much better than this.
I'll take that bet. The tech demo ran a dynamic 1440p, and could barely hold onto 30fps at times, and used no ray tracing to achieve these results.

Didn't Epic say UE5 would be ready for 2021? So maybe a handful of devs have access to an early version, but most probably don't, or won't until near the end of the year is my guess.

And I get it; we definitely won't see games like this at launch. But I'm hoping it'll be possible after only a couple years at max. Considering everything they cut off to get the demo going, and the resolution/framerate it's at (1440p/30 FPS), I think expecting actual games at this visual level in a year or two after launch is possible. Which means we can hopefully expect even more visually intensive games afterwards.

IF this looks bland to you, maybe you should cut back your expectations for next gen. Maybe in year 5 of next gen, we might get a game that looks close to this, maybe.

Visually there's NOTHING bland about this at all. This is probably my favorite next-gen showcase along with the Bright Memory Infinite demo last week, Project MARA RT effects, and some of the stuff in the Hellblade 2 trailer.

But gameplay-wise? I guess someone expecting "next-gen" gameplay concepts (whatever those would entail) could probably think it's a tad "bland". I would rather say "safe, iterative", but there's nothing wrong with not having "new" gameplay mechanics or concepts. What should matter is if what's there is fun. It certainly looked fun in the demo to me.

It’s probably the less impressive tech demo I’ve seen from Epic.

Looks okay, but nothing that impressive, really.
Ya I mean UE4 elemental tech demo still slaps today, I understand the things that are happening under the hood but the splooge here isn't warranted.

Looks impressive but I would imagine it will take a few years before games start to look like this, so all that snark aimed at games from MS presentation is a bit weird. And even then Scorn looked pretty damn good, for slightly different reasons.

I should remember to put /s on those type of comments, so many people took it too seriously.

1440p/30fps is a let down for a Next gen live demo. Graphically it looks good but very bland.
What does this mean for the Slipspace Engine, though?
i was under the impression that the slipspace engine was designed exclusively with halo in mind.
Extremely bland.

I bet with you the first Naughty Dog game made for the next gen is going to look much better than this.
if its another uncharted it’ll likely be equally bland.

Truly spectacular.
I wonder how much it will affect the ongoing projects made with Unreal 4.

Here we go... so this automatically means sony paid epic to show off a non proprietary engine *eye roll* when they could just show off one of their own engines from their in-house development?

Using that line in the article doesnt even line up with how sony have approached marketing or talking about ps5 thus far, as alot of what they are doing is still unknown, so it doesnt even make sense that they would make a payment or some type of marketing deal for epic to show off UE 5 first on ps5, when sony has yet to even do or announce a full playstation 5 reveal, lol. Might i add according to several people on these very forums MS has all the money anyway so why didnt they do it? They certainly had the chance considering they of their own accord planned a game showcase just last week.

Lets use logic here and not conspiracys, the guy said what he said how he said it as to not step on toes. EPIC is partnered with both companys and im sure they are working with both very 'closely'.

From their blog post
We’re designing for forward compatibility, so you can get started with next-gen development now in UE4 and move your projects to UE5 when ready.

Looks amazing but there are some things here that fire bullshit alert in me:

- frame-rate was atrocious. Sub 30fps for a tech demo. No way real game looking like that would even be 10fps.
- despite claiming that every light is real yellow light coming out of device at the end didn't gave any light
- i don't see how this can fit into VRAM if they are really using raw assets. For those who don't know some assets can be 10-20GBs each let alone scenes which could be terrabytes of data.

Imho demo was not actually on PS5 but on some professional PC with 20-30GB of VRAM.

🤔

Well, maybe they should have used RT instead.

And a character model who actually looked much better than what we have now.

And some art direction so the game doesn’t look as the most insipid and boring thing ever. The Samaritan demo was amazing. This Lara Croft meets Winx Club was hideous.

Shit, they even had the shitty “going slowly through a wall” for loading purposes. Wasn’t the SSD going to save us all from that type of crap?

And this was 1440p and 30fps? Fuck, it’s getting worse by the minute.
