Upcoming Perfect Dark is possibly a Remake (from linkedin profile of Principle Technical Animator at The Initiative)

I was expecting a reboot,
seeing that its a remake is disappointing

Or that's because there was an actual Perfect Dark Remake/Remaster on XBLA, and he happened to have worked on it?

So should we expect horrible Golden eye level remake since it's coming from Xbox with their track record for old Rare games?

It was always tagged as a complete re-imagining, not a continuation.

With the full backing from Xbox Studios to re-imagine one of the best loved IPs from gaming history, we couldn't be more excited to share some of our early ideas.

Perfect dark was "1999 cool", I don't think they can capture it remaking or making sequels without understanding that the game didn't take itself that seriously.

Everything these days is super serious, that's simply not Perfect Dark.

Best case scenario: They can pull a Chloe from Uncharted 2 and run with it.

Let's hope so. Because the perfect dark remaster was excellent. As were the banjo 1&2 remasters. You have played a goldenye remake? Cool. Was that the one made by activision yea?

Actually, as Calverz sair above, Banjo Kazooie, Tooie and Perfect Dark got pretty good ports by 4J Studios.

GoldenEye did as well, but Activision didn't let Microsoft release it back then because of Nintendo's pressure. (instead they did a Goldeneye remake for the Wii, then ported it for PS3 and X360)

It had been reported as ready for years, then leaked in 2021, and here's a comparison with what we got on Series S/X:

Unexplainably, they opted to make a new port, and made a worst one regarding graphics and features than the one they had ready 10 years ago.

Track record is actually not bad for ports, but the GoldenEye port from 2023 is quite a letdown.

I must be a dumb arse because I'd originally interpreted that statement to mean they were doing Perfect Dark in their own way (not beholden to being an FPS for example).

How can the project have been this much of a mess so far if it's working with the source material?

How many Xbox gamers were even alive when Perfect Dark came out?

I'm amazed there is this much nostalgia for it.
Well it's only the highest rated FPS of all time, tied with the equally GOAT Halo, no biggie really. (Metroid Prime is also at 97 and is technically a FPS I guess)

If it's really a remake I don't know how to feel. You could certainly make something amazing with today's technology using PD's plot, but I liked the approach shown in the only trailer ever published.

Or maybe there are two projects, which would be the best scenario but I don't believe it.

My goodness. You guys jump to more conclusions then... I actually don't know where I was going with that

I played little of rare replay, and so far the gameplay was kind fun.

Hope the remake is good.

I am itching for a splinter cell type of game.

I dont know about that. 90s cyberpunk was super serious if I remember correctly. Self aware is what I assumed you meant cause ya we could learn alot from that time period. I cant go into it now but I think thats one of the problems where having now with censorship is after 2000 films/tv startex focusing on authenticity more with stuff like 24 having a bunch of real world consultants ect and we quickly lost our self aware toungue and cheek wink at the audience with for instance 80s one liners and purposly over the top action to say to such audience "Chill this is just a movie, these people arent suposed to be realistic or role models". I think the refocus on a sense of authenticity since 2000 has significantly contributed to the level of censorship where seeing now.

The whole things sounds more like a reboot very similar to what Gallagher did with Tomb Raider. Definitely down with that.

Reboot, remake, reimagining, remaster, rerelease... All these terms are thrown around interchangeably these days and have largely lost their meaning. In my head they all mean different things, but you can argue the semantics til the cows come home.

It's a new Perfect Dark and chances are it's not gonna have much at all to do with the old ones. Same with Fable. Until they actually show anything I wouldn't take these labels at face value.

Perfect Dark Zero was an exclusive launch title for the Xbox 360, and the remaster of Perfect Dark was released only on Xbox 360 as well. Why are you so surprised?

To me there's an argument that perfect dark is the greatest fps in gaming history, at that point goldeneye and turok were battling it out.

a reboot/ reimaging of the first game seems like the natural choice, this could be a good thing! Give it the FFVII R/ RE4 remake treatment. It's not like Perfect Dark has had a lot of installments, and Zero was not very well-received. So making a third Perfect Dark game 18 years after Zero in the same timeline, it would be like, what's even the audience for this.

I doubt it. Look at the list and the way it's ordered. He put newer projects first and older games on the bottom. Outside of I think Anthem and TLOU2, that list seems to be in order of release/development.
