Update regarding Horizon Forbidden West (PS4 versions now have entitlement to free PS5 upgrade, other games will have $10 upgrade fee)

If the PS4 game is getting a free PS5 upgrade, there's really no point in a dedicated PS5 edition at $10 more.

The PS5 boxed copy should either disappear, or it gets reduced to $60 to match PS4.

But let's see if Sony leaves the PS5 copy still there for +$10 hoping nobody read this Labour Day weekend blog post and just mindlessly buys the PS5 edition.
The price will change , it's not like they will scam people that missed the news lol. All Standard editions will be $60. Just like it was for Sackboy's big Adventure, for instance, and many third party games.

This is nice, but they need to add the ability to transfer your save from PS5 to PS4 to auto pop the trophies. Sucks that it works transferring save from PS4 to PS5 but not vice versa.

Good on them giving horizon for free as promised. But future titles still have a $10 tax, seriously? Why?

There is NO tax for "next gen" on PC or Xbox games studios.

That's a good point. If you keep in mind that Microsoft is able to offer cross-gen games at a single price, then Sony really ought to match this.

They should all be free upgrades. The games share a common development track.

So why would anyone buy the ps5 version? 🤣🤣

One possibility is that someone owns a PS5, but doesn't have the system connected to the Internet. Therefore, he can't download any ""updates" or "upgrades". He would need to install everything directly from the disc.

What's more interesting about Jim's statement about $10 future upgrades is it involves God of War, GT7 and "any other exclusive cross-gen PS4 & PS5 title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment."

Which means there's more unannounced cross gen games.

I'm willing to bet that MLB The Show 22 will still be on both systems.

They said launch games were going to be free. Horizon was never a launch game

Nice man jim is just appeasing to the masses who couldn't read.
Whether it was a launch title isn't the issue and is hardly relevant. Sony said the upgrade was going to be free. Their blog from last year before the PS5 launched says the upgrade was going to be free.

Additionally, we know that the PS4 community will transition to PS5 at different times, and we’re happy to announce PS4 versions of some of our exclusives. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Sackboy A Big Adventure, and Horizon Forbidden West will also launch on PS4. While these three games were designed to take advantage of PS5 and its unique next-gen features like the ultra-high-speed SSD and DualSense controller, PS4 owners will also be able to enjoy these experiences when they launch. The PS4 digital versions of launch games include a free upgrade on both PS5 consoles, while the PS4 disc versions of these games include a free upgrade on the PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-Ray disc drive.

It is relevent because the part about free upgrades specifically related to launch games

That's because xbox next gen titles don't have as many upgradable components.

In the example, Horizon, they literally have more foliage, and more coral and underwater is more detailed - i expect God of War will be like that too, not sure what GT will bring in that regard tho.

its not just and FPS or res boost like most Xbox games.

That's also why they are making all their new games (xbox) exclusive to next gen so they can avoid what sony is doing. It's easy to do when you have half the user base Sony has on last gen consoles.
You’re basing this on what?

I didn't ignore it. I already responded to you about that

They had to compromise since people believed they were promised a free upgrade and it got out of hand
In the blog, they only talk about it applying to launch games, yes. But in another interview Jim Ryan (most likely still under the assumption of launch but regardless) stated specifically the HFW would be a free which is likely the main reason they had to make it free.

It's good that they did this given the uproar and good they clarified that there will always be a $10 dollar upgrade path for games applicable.

Hard to go by WP stuff since they're just paraphrasing

But yeah best thing to come out of these PR diasters is the communication.

At this point he's just being pedantic to justify some moronic stance. Sony said the upgrade was to be free, Jim said the upgrade was to be free. People doing 4D chess to protect Sony after they already admitted they forgot what they said.

so people were mad because sony didnt have an upgrade path, they backtrack... people still mad. lol
That shouldn't surprise anyone. The move by Sony was poor and they should still try to make the path for people to switch to PS5 easier (and less costly) but some of the folks here making a big fuss were Xbox guys, who only did so because it made their favorite company and box look better. That's part of the console war narrative. Sony just made it easier for them, lol (which is true....the pricing strategy is/was stupid.)

No doubt there will be more.

But the best thing about Jim's statement (assuming he sticks to it), is his commitment to $10 upgrades for future games. Therefore, no more Horizon FW shenanigans forcing gamers to buy different editions or that +$20 combo platform edition.

If a PS4 gamer gets a PS5 later and wants to play it with PS5 quality, Sony has now committed to a simple to understand $10 upgrade path.
Where’s my $10 upgrade for Ghosts ya charlatan! forcing me to get the dlc just because I want the triggers!

So buy it on PS4 to save $10?

Also in case you were part of the camp that didn't believe gt7 was actually coming to PS4 Jimbo explicitly confirms it
Kinda pissed about the final GT7 confirmation, it’s obvious now that because this needs to run on 8 year old hardware this’ll just be GT sport with a proper GT campaign. As great as GT sport is to me, I want a bigger, better evolution for the series that’s truly next gen.

Yep, fanboys got caught fanboying and they’re ill equipped to deal with the about-face from Sony.

No Silksong? = Delivering the pain.
Eat shit. Sony themselves admit they intended it to be a free upgrade.
Yeah, which is extremely generous. But people are STILL mad. Now the ten dollar upgrade for future titles is too much to handle. When is it going to be enough? Or are the goalposts going to keep moving until they just give you free shit forever? Hence, if you want next gen games, buy the next gen game. The logic that you should be entitled to a free next gen game because you bought the previous gen version is asinine and entitled. Never before has this been an issue.

This wasn’t about that though. Nice goalpost move. It was about Sony saying Horizon would have a free upgrade, and then they charged for it. Now they admit they fucked up.

Lol, well I thought the other thread was a dumpster fire but it looks like we're doubling down.

I'm surprised they thought Horizon would be a launch game in September 2020.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.

Just means my Ps4 got another good couple years in it lol. Thanks Jimmy
i dont understand why people keep saying this.

PS5 is better than PS4 especially for BC games, the difference between the frame rate is HUGE, or at least the 30fps frame will be locked on PS5.
