Upgrade to Windows 10?

Your first install of windows 10 needs to be an upgrade so it can activate. After it is activated you can burn a windows 10 disk and do a fresh install.

I already did the upgrade, but it was giving me problems with my office suite. So today I decided to go buy office 2013 but still giving me problems after removing win 2010. So I was going to do a clean install but not sure where the product key is in order to the install. I've already done a USB boot up drive, but the rep is telling me that I stil need to install win 7 and then upgrade it to win 10 agin. That's long and a waste of time.

This was pretty widely known, was it not?

I've already done the upgrade, I'm not doing a clean install from the get go.

Anyone who upgraded have a problem where they cant delete any old files from Windows 7/8? Tried to delete a picture earlier that had been saved before I upgraded, and it said it was an invalid MSdos function.

I tried that last night. (I chose upgrade instead of create installation media, if that is pertinent info.) It downloaded, went through all the prompts, everything went fine. It started installing, and at some point past the 75% mark it had to restart the computer. I went to get a drink and came back and I was on the Gigabyte splash screen and it said boot failure. I selected to reboot the computer, and it just went back to Windows 8.1 with no prompts or errors or anything, like nothing ever happened.

What do I do from here? It seems like nobody has a clue. I've posted about this several times in several threads and have not got a single reply about it.

well i had a similar error when i did mine but it worked 2nd time.myabe this will help

win 7 pro i first time elected to use the Media Creation Tool and downloaded the update and let it run, i chose to keep my exsisting files when it asks you, later on after the reboot, i got the error that some data migration had failed. it rolled back to win 7 pronto automatically saying restoring windows.

the 2nd attempt i just ran the setup.exe file off the bootable USB i created and it ran fine, this time i said fuck it keep nothing, update went thru 100% and win 10 was done.

maybe give this a try - what settings are you using on keep data?

Hey guys, I need some help. My Xbox streaming doesn't detect my xbox one nor my xbox 360 controllers. But I'm able to play my games just fine. No idea why this is happening.

I'm impressed and scared at the same time.

I've just upgraded my old crummy laptop to windows 10 but I did a clean install on it. Signed into my microsoft mail account and all my backgrounds are the same as my PC. But the pictures aren't even on my laptop?!?!!?

How is this wizardry working?!

Yes, this is what happens when you use bad methods propagated by bad web sites telling you to upgrade based on advice from Reddit.

Instead follow the instructions I provided, which are sources straight from Microsoft

Reposting my entire post for the new page:

I didn't see your post and went ahead and deleted the download folder, lol.. But luckily the upgrade went smoothless regardless.

Have played around with W10 for the last couple of hours and everything seems fine, also played some W3; not a hitch.

...I give up, Windows 8.1 is good enough for me

I used to have the "Get Windows 10" icon in my task bar. When I look for it today I notice it is gone now. I downloaded their little troubleshooter and it is saying my PC is not eligible for upgrade and further information says that my windows is not up to date (it is). I have Windows 8.1 Pro and a really high end machine so it makes no sense to me. So I guess I can't register for now. I'm kind of worried about trying to do it manually in case there really IS some problem with my PC running Windows 10, which would really make no sense but I just want to be careful and avoid headaches.

Heroes of the storm starts really slowly for me. It just hangs there during alt tab. Win10 upgrade is great overall through, I don't think I will do a fresh install now.

I installed 10 on a new SSD and left my old 7 HDD in there as a data drive. I could not access the old 7 drive due to permissions issues. It would just say "access denied". I can tell you what I did and it worked but I am doing this from memory as I'm at work now.

What you have to do is:

1) Take ownership of the drive (right-click -> Security -> Advanced -> Owner -> Add yourself) and be sure to check the box to apply to all underlying files and containers. Windows 10 will not recognize the current owner and will have to reset the owner to the current user. This will take a lot of time depending on the speed of the drive and how many files there are as it will have to "touch" each file.

2) Go back to security and assign the SYSTEM, Administrators, and Authenticated Users user groups full control of the drive. Apply. This will again take a long time.

After doing this I could access all files on the drive. Bear in mind that if, like me, you had an old Windows install on the drive, it would probably not work any more if you did this as all the permissions would be borked when you tried to boot back into it. But in my case I was never going back to 7 on that machine anyway so no big loss.

Are you using digital or analog out? Sometimes digital out relies on the speakers or receiver to adjust volume.

What kind of card? I had an issue with Windows update trying to install an older NVIDIA driver over my more recent one that I had installed directly from the NVIDIA website. If it was me I'd try switching to VGA output if possible.

Windows Update will install drivers but they are old. Go to NVIDIA's website and download the most recent Win10 driver from there.

GTX 970. I've got no access to a VGA monitor.

Had to hard restart and now seem to have no way to retry the installation :(

How good is your system?

I know there are minimum requirements for installing Windows 10 in place.

Does your computer meet the requirements? If it does, try this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ojFyiI2fcQ then restart (don't think it's necessary to change the locale though). Worked for me.

I have gotten past this point numerous times yesterday only to get greeted with a different error I couldn't fix on the boot up screen. I thought "Maybe I should just have only my SSD attached since that's the drive that it's installing to." I'll let it try once more in the background with my HDD reconnected

Edit: Okay, so the video did point out my format was not set to US, maybe that'll help

Hello again! I've since "disabled" Runtime Broker through a registry tweak, and everything has been fine for a good 6 hours as far as I can tell. All I've done was to change the dword value from a 3 to a 4 in the following registry key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TimeBroker] "Start"=dword:00000003 (change to 4)

You'll notice that Runtime Broker will still run when needed, without thrashing your CPU 100% of the time.

I have seen that solution but I've been hesitant to try it since people have said it has caused problems for them on some Metro apps and even the Start menu. Problems with Start were the big reason I did a fresh install in the first place (Search stopped working whenever it felt like it).

The damn thing about this all though? Today? No problems so far. I had my machine off all night and I started it up for the day and bam... no issues (yet, knocking on wood). I used Edge for a bit, I opened up the Store and redownloaded Tweetium. I ran Tweetium. No problems.

I just got done streaming some Fallout: New Vegas, so that was running, Edge was running for the Twitch chat, OBS was up. Not a flare up of Runtime Broker.

I really don't know what changed though. I mean, I restarted multiple times last night when this was an issue. I even fully shut down and waited a minute or so before doing a "cold" boot last night a couple of times. And it never seemed to fix the issue. And now suddenly it's not doing it? I'm not convinced that it's "fixed" for good but something happened here, I just don't know what.

Yeah I'm too nervous to do the upgrade right now being so close(I think) to the end of Witcher 3. I downloaded it and everything and then right when it said install I canceled out. Lol.

Does anyone else still get "Thank you for reserving your free upgrade"?

I was thinking about using the registry upgrade method. Has anyone here tried using this method to upgrade yet?

I have and it'a currently upgrading.
Quick and easy fix.

Also I've read that Windows Updates now uses a p2p connection to help diatribute updates faster. Is this true?

Well it took forever to get through the 'Preparing for Installation' process and then of course it ended up with an error again. Ugh.

I kept getting that error because I didn't have 20G of free space. Once I cleared up that amount of space I was able to install.

How's everybody finding it on unsupported Mobo's? Ive got a P8Z77-V and my Microsoft update logo just says Win 10 not recommended for my system yet...and to wait.....

I used the media tool to download Win 10 early because the system icon was taking so long to actually become "available"

is it safe to delete the Windows BT folder it used to download W10 in the background since I'm now on W10 proper?

Right click your name on the start menu and choose account settings. There you will find sync settings that tells what gets synced across your Win8/10 computers and devices. You must have it enabled on both your PCs (probably default).

That's awesome! I'm glad things improved on their own for you. As for me, Windows 10 has been running flawlessly since changing that one registry value. Apps work, search works, everything works as far as I can tell. Like I said, Runtime Broker is most definitely still running on my machine, it's just much less demanding now.

I'll give the default value another chance in a couple days. Hopefully by then it will no longer an issue. :-)

Since Windows Defender is obviously not compatible with W10 what antivirus should I be using? I have Malware bits running, but nothing else.

Something weird is occurring while upgrading. I'm using the ISO to download Windows 10 on a computer and once it reaches 100% it closes out like it's all done. The other computers I have upgraded never did this, they just progressed. Maybe it has to do with the one I'm having trouble with having a nearly full HDD.

Do I need to download any Nvidia drivers after the update or does it carry the current one over?

I'd download and install the latest drivers for W10 from NVIDIA after the update.

is it safe to delete the Windows BT folder it used to download W10 in the background since I'm now on W10 proper?

It'd be even safer and easier to use the built-in tool for clearing up these old files. Just follow the guide at this site and you should get that space back + more. Worked fine for me.

Upgraded, everything is fine.

Except for stuttering and graphical glitches in various games :/
Gotta wait for them drivers, I suppose.

I kept getting that error because I didn't have 20G of free space. Once I cleared up that amount of space I was able to install.
I had 26GB free but doing the modification to the registry finally allowed the install. On W10 now with no issues. :)

In a offtopic thing: Early I was in a Windows 10 conference in my university, they put to explain the gaming and xbox part to a person who barely know about gaming, it was so awkward to listen him.

Oh wow, seems I can't find it. Guess I'll search for it then.

edit: lol it just popped up and said it detected something on my comp. First time I've seen it since the install.

You'll find it under Settings->Updates & Safety (or whatever it's called in the English version)

make sure you uninstall that mod [whichever you used].

I used start8 - and until I uninstalled it my start menu did NOT look or work properly at all.
I used start8 as well, and all it did was replace the original start menu with the Start8 one. Worked pretty much as advertised, but since I want to use the new menu I uninstalled it.

I did a clean install of Windows 10, downloaded Origin and signed in. None of my games showed up. Restarted Origin multiple times. Restarted the PC multiple times. Still nothing. Anyone else having the same issue?

Go to Edge settings/advanced/ click have Cortana help in Edge... boom

Started to enable Cortana and it's like this thing needs my blood type, finger prints, social security, and a camera installed in all my rooms. I see where Microsoft is going with this thing. Want those advertising bucks, and information on a lot of people like google.

Now to just stick with not using that feature that required Cortana and undo what I just did on the way to finally enable it.
