Upgrade to Windows 10?

How can I stop Windows from turning on my PC at 2:30 in the night? (except shutting off the power supply)
I sleep in the same room as my PC is and this happened both nights since I have Windows 10 installed and I wake me up when I hear it.
I use the energy save mode instead of shutting the system down completely and don't want to change that.

Probably the alarm app?
I am assuming you are putting your computer to sleep and not fully shut down because you might have a ghost if the computer is powering from a cold state.

Update: tried to upgrade with the ISO and it didn't work. Said my windows key wasn't valid (used my windows 7 Key...and yes its genuine).

If you update from previous OS you DON'T HAVE a valid W10 key. You can't input the 7 key and expect it to work with 10.

What you can do is verify online W7 is genuine, then update to 10 WITHOUT adding any key (just skip when it asks). When the installation is over W10 is already activated.

For EVERYONE:
If you update from an early version and not buying a new copy you WON'T HAVE a Windows 10 key. What instead happens is that Microsoft register a footprint of your hardware, so that when you verify W10 online it automatically activates (as long you don't change the motherboard).

Everyone who updates from earlier version uses the exact same W10 key.

i upgraded my pc to windows 8.1 like a couple of days ago. but i cant find where the reserve windows 10 app is? its supposed to be in the toolbar but theres nothing there. Windows update is unable to pick up any additional downloads either!

what should i do?

Yes, no ghosts :D I use the energy save/sleep mode. But I have never used the alarm app. I assume it's connected to windows update or some other maintenance that Windows has planned.
I found via the search function a setting for the automatic maintenance for activating the PC on its own and disabled it. I hope this is sufficient.

Hide DS4 Controller/Use Exclusive Mode isn't working on W10. There is a fix but it seems rather patchwork. Link

Not perfectly then, my bad. Tried it with a couple of games and everything worked fine, I thought the problem was that it either works perfectly or doesn't work at all, so I made some assumptions..

This is a problem with games that support DS4 natively, right? The game will get douple inputs etc. I wonder if there's a list of such games.

Strange, Windows 10 upgrade notification icon in my Win7 is disappeared. Am i doomed?

Maybe.
I wasted a lot of time to get it back up.
I tried to run the script to get it back up, and that didn't work.
All it did was that it verified that I had the correct KB patch and everything was good to go.
Media toolkit didn't let me upgrade to Win 10 to bypass this notification thing.
So I just did a full install of Win 8 instead...

Downloaded the setupRST.exe and the update, setup brings an error saying the platform is not supported, can't find anywhere on that page informing where to put the folder of other files from the update.

Also having an issue with my Disk being at 99%, 4 processes using the disk, all 0.1MB/s.

And now Antimalware Executable is eating 20% of my RAM..

So far Windows 10 has been "Fuck you, give me all your resources!"

What a mess so far. Easiest part was cloning my old SSD to the new one. Upgrading to Windows 10 first gave me the 'something happened' error so I got past that by changing my system language.

Made it all the way through and it bitched about my system partition and canceled the install. So I went in via suggested fix online and cleared out some language shit in there. Here's hoping it actually installs this time, though it seems it has to redownload everything all over again.

Should have just created some installation media instead.

So there is no way to just do an "upgrade" by installing it to another drive? Guess that means extra steps will have to be involved. Clone -> Upgrade -> Reinstall. If I had known this I'd have just reinstalled Windows 7 a couple months ago.

Uninstall it then. It's not required.

Yeah, some games will work fine but Ultra SF4 won't work because you need to be able to check that option. Its a shame.

I just install it, restart and not showing any issues. You can try uninstalling the Intel Rapid Storage software. Then, reinstall it or just run with Microsoft's default storage drivers.

As for your other software issue, maybe, try uninstalling and reinstalling it.

I was expecting Windows 10 to be quicker than Windows 7 in terms of start up and general performance but it's been quite disappointing in that regard. Also it seems a lot more CPU intensive, the fan is kicking in when just navigating around the desktop and firefox. And according to the resource monitor it's writing to the disk quite a lot for some reason.

Plus, twice now i've have to own the Documents folder which is on another partition just to be able to save to it. Think i might try a fresh install to see if that helps.

Yeah I've heard my gpu fan for the first time since this update whilst idle. Never noticed it in win7 as it was just quiet and never really got audible until I played a game. But I seem to hear it slightly more when just browsing through Win10 :/

My PC was lightning fast at opening everything with win7 (I'm using an SSD) so in the speedness regard, my pc couldn't really be any faster on win10

Guys, I have the 128gb and 4gb of ram and sometimes with Edge it looks like it gets a bit slower when using that app. With Chrome it doesn't seem to have that problem. Do you guys have the same problem?

in terms of OS Speed a fresh install is usually faster than an upgraded one.
i made a fresh one today on a laptop i upgraded Yesterday and the difference is pretty noticeable

In trouble shooting another issues I stopped a bunch of services I probably shouldn't have and now I find myself without internet access on my windows 10. pc. Neither my Ethernet or WiFi connections can connect to the web.

What are the essential services I need to make sure a running to connect to the internet?

EDIT:

Forget the above it was because I attempted to uninstall AVG and it was messy. I was subsequently able to uninstall it and internet was access restored.

1) Use the current address and password to login to account.microsoft.com

2) Click on "Your Info" at the top

3) Click on "Manage your sign-in email or phone number"

4) You can click "Add Email Alias" to add additional email addresses to use for signing in

Once you have verified the accounts, you can switch one of them to your primary.

Thanks, will try this when I get home.

Everytime I try to add my e-mail address it states "This email address is already taken. Please try another one". Any way around this?

Proper noob question but can I do a clean install of Win10 without it wiping my secondary HDD?

I have pretty much everything installed on a seperate drive and my SSD C drive just contains Windows.

Not sure what is going on here, my PC should be downloading the install files automatically, but nothing seems to be happening.

I used disk cleanup and cleared everything and all the service pack update files and whatnot. When I rebooted it picked up my upgrade and everything installed ok.

Unless I can easily go back to win 7, I am not upgrading to 10 until I'm certain 10 is better for my needs.

It gives you an option to do a clean install or leave the files you have on your hard drive.

I never installed a OS without a clean install. Can I leave my files on my harddrive? Im currently pretty busy with work, and can't take that much time to re-install everything.

If it is definitely advised to do a clean install. Will W10 be free for me for the foreseeable future?

I have a pretty new laptop running W8.1

So I just upgraded, but in doing so, it's seriously downgraded my resolution to 640 instead of 1920x1080 (my monitor is a Sony Bravia).

I've tried going to fix it, but in doing so, the option for the Bravia isn't there in the display settings (though is there for audio, but even then, when I try to set that to default output, the option is locked).

Any help on this? Is there a workaround or should I go back to Windows 7?

Might be a silly question - did you install drivers for your GPU?

Upgrade it.
You only do clean install if you feel your OS is running slow due to bad files.
I upgraded 3 of my computers, and did a clean install on one due to error.
The upgraded computers feel the same and everything works.
It feels great not to move files and folders to old spot.

If you're using a TV connected via HDMI, the GPU should automatically detect the native resolution and output at that. Check your drivers are up to date.

Why is the search box so damn stupid. Press start, start typing name of program and it almost never brings up the one I want. Just does a web search. Turning off web search doesn't help either.
