Upgrade to Windows 10?

Does 10 have any improvements from a gaming perspective? If not I'm not even going to bother upgrading yet.I'm still on Win 7 and don't really have any issues with it.

Some DX11 games are optimized to work better on 10

And some studios are thinking about only supporting Win10 in very close future [like DICE].

You can wait a bit before free upgrade, there is no rush. You have a year.

My Windows 10 upgrade went smoothly. Though an annoying aside is that when I disable my third monitor (which is my flatscreen TV that I disconnect intermittently) it doesn't give me any in Windows option to enable it again. It simply becomes inaccessible from the Display Properties screen. I have to go into the Nvidia control to enable it again.

I have an old 560ti that I'm using as a dedicated Physx video card, but after the Windows 10 update I can't seem to get my computer to recognize it anymore. Has anybody gotten their second video card to work like this?

I don't even have Windows 10 yet, so all I have been doing is making a list of everything I have to DISABLE when I do get it.

Not sure if that hassle is worth upgrading in the first place. Seems completely counterproductive.

there's really not that much and almost all of it is presented to you right when you install w10. after 1st startup, disable cortana and that's pretty much it.

Bollocks, wish I'd never bothered switching from Vista to 7 so that I could upgrade to 10. With upgrading to 7 keeping all my files and settings and stuff everything was looking great until I tried trying to access the internet. Nothing.

Tried updating my ethernet driver, tried going through the troubleshooting thing which tells me everything is working fine. But I can't update Windows 7, use the browser or anything.

Weird how during the troubleshooting thing that it's claiming to connect to Microsoft.com or any other website I bung in and it's saying that it's connecting but as soon as I start Windows Update or open up a browser I can't connect.

Anyone else had a similar problem when switching from Vista to 7 that can help me please..?

Currently there is an issue when using WDDM1.3 and 2.0 cards at the same time. The 560ti is a Fermi card, so you're going to have to wait for Nvidia to implement wddm 2.0 drivers for those cards (their implementation was delayed).

Has anyone tried using downsampling a game while using multiple monitors?

Originally the downsampled game would stay within one monitor but now the game pushes into the second monitor. Is there any way I can prevent that?

Thanks! Good to hear they're working on it.

Upgraded my laptop to Win 10 using the download tool. Worked fine, no issues so far. The games I have on there -- GTA5, Grow Home, Ethan Carter, Kingdom Come demo -- all work fine and *seem* to run a little better. All my programs work fine. The only stuff I've had to reinstall were my trackpad drivers and the 360 wireless receiver driver.

Try downloading drivers for your ethernet adapter on another device, putting them on a usb stick, going into device manager, uninstalling the drivers for your ethernet adapter, reinstalling your ethernet driver and pointing windows to the drivers on the usb.

Also, if I were you, I'd just do a clean install of Windows 10. If you ask me, upgrades are messy things that can only cause problems. Performance for me was much better on a clean W10 install than on the upgrade.

EDIT: Also, what in God's name were you still doing on Vista?

Not sure if I could ask it here but anyway I bought a new gaming pc yesterday and instantly updated it to windows 10. Now I'm opening geforce updater but it doesn't find any update? Is this normal? I thought there were regular driver updates for 3d cards.

What is your current driver? It might have already installed the latest driver, in that case it doesn't 'find' any new drivers to download.

I upgraded to 8 from 7 during that promotion where you could get it for 15 dollars. Does anyone, by any chance have the email that Microsoft used to send those product keys out after purchase? I have so many emails ;-;

Just upgraded my 7 and 8.1s at home to Windows 10. But what happens if I happen to upgrade parts (MB) in the future? If I burn ISO and install it using my current windows 10 product key - would MS honor it?

What is? I can enable "Most used" but it's completely useless as it doesn't show any of the apps I actually use. I want to pin the apps myself.

Oh snap, sorry, thought that wasn't just rendering. My bad.

Assuming the entire right side is considered your pinning area now, then.

I installed an insider build of 10 on top of a genuine 8.1 build. Will I get the update? Do I have to do anything special? I've tried googling but couldn't find a definitive answer.

Your PC is probably still shocked by the fact you were using Vista.

My PC turns on now when I hit a key on the keyboard. How do I disable this?

Its not a bios setting, it was the same in windows 8 but I forgot how to disable it.

Upgraded from 8.1 then did a clean install.

Its so good. Only needed to install the chipset and AMD gpu drivers the rest was found. No product key needed. Had a problem with my gpu after switching it where I got worse performance, but that got fixed with the reinstall.

Steam and Origin games on another drive so no need to re download. Only some games like GW2 I had to DL again.

Love that they kept the Win+X, right click on start menu, its the best! New CMD, virtual desktops, window transitions etc are all great.

Shut some privacy stuff off, and the Windows update internet setting.

Do people who have upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 with no SSD and without doing a clean install have the same startup times or slower?

It would be awesome if someone could help me with a few questions :) I have a Surface Pro 3 and I would like to make a clean install of Windows 10 to avoid to keep unnessesary data because I have only 64 GB ;) What do I need to do to archive this. Please explain like I am a really dumb person :D And from where do I get my Windows 8.1 Serial number, and is it recommended to uptate so early on Surface Pro 3, or should I wait a little longer because of known issues with Windows 10 on Surface Pro 3 hardware?

Thanks :)

As someone with a 64 GB Surface Pro 3 (but only using ~25GB of OneDrive space), what I chose to do was buy a MicroSD. For me, 64GB was fine, and I prioritised speed as I also wanted to offload some heftier game installs to external storage (Sims 3, Football Manager, The Witcher). The Samsung Pro is what I opted for. What I then did, was offload any game / programme files in my documents folder (Sports Interactive, Musescore) to a new folder in the MicroSD.

I then right-clicked OneDrive, then properties, then changed the location to the D: (MicroSD) drive. You could leave it there if you wanted to - it'll show up all the same the file explorer, and you don't need to worry about the MicroSD failing, as it's all backed up to the cloud by design. In fact, if this is all you're using the MicroSD for, you can opt for slower / higher storage. 128GB cards aren't extortionate today. If you have more files than that in your OneDrive, prioritise – but at least more can make the cut.

I did go a step further again, and moved the locations of my documents, pictures, music and videos folders into the OneDrive folder on my MicroSD, and tidied my OneDrive up so that everything fell into one of these folders.

The result? Anything I save to my cloud will automatically show up in my documents / pictures / music / videos on local storage, and everything I save to those folders locally is automatically backed up in the cloud. Doubly good for music, as Groove on Xbox allows you to play tracks without a subscription if they exist in your OneDrive. The reason for moving the programme folders to the SD earlier means they don't get synced to OneDrive, taking up valuable cloud storage allowance. If you have enough, then you can go ham here. I don't lose SSD speed for anything but the aforementioned larger games, all programmes still default to install on the SSD, and I have more local space free on my Surface Pro 3 now than I've had since day one.

I'm glad that worked out for you, but that's not what I'm after. I'm not looking to spend money for more local storage to work around Microsoft's new system. I just want Onedrive to work like how it did prior to this update. The whole point of cloud storage is that I don't have to store stuff locally. Now that's no longer possible in many situations. I will just have to manage my local storage a bit until Microsoft releases a new universal app or something. I did a quick search online and pretty much everyone is saying this new Onedrive is worse than before.

Well W10 has been solid from the moment I installed it. My Windows.old folder and the hidden temp directories were taking up about 30GB of valuable space. That all just went poof.

What have I done?

Seriously though, very happy and zero complaints.

Can't tell if that is a rhetorical question or if you actually want to know. But just in case you do want to know, you can't roll back now. Windows.old had the previous version of windows and the temporary directories likely had the Windows 10 install files.

How large is the upgrade? I have the $Windows.~BT file and its about 6 GB. THe upgrade notification still hasn't come up yet. Tried checking for updates, no luck.

Okay so I've been trying to upgrade my Bosses Surface Pro 3 to W10 all day and can't get it to go through. Tried in the same way as I did on my home PC, keep forcing it via CmD and deleting the Software Distribution Download Files etc..

Trying to create a USB to upgrade from now by downloading it of the MS site.

Any reason this wouldn't work on a surface pro 3?

Also, the OEM Windows key under system should be the one I need to activate it correct?

Yeah I was just joking. I figured I'd give it a week but I really need the space and I didn't have a single reason to reconsider. I'm quite surprised because it seems like quite a few people are having some issues. Upgraded my dads computer and all is good there as well.

How do you upgrade to Win 10 sooner, if you still haven't got the notification alert yet?

Or do you need MS to send you a install Key first?

Been waiting 3 days but it hasn't given me the notification to get it yet.

Thanks.

How do I see the battery level of my wireless 360 controllers on Windows 10? Guide button doesn't show it no more.

My guess would be ms should have released updated win10 drivers or are they builtin?

Anyway ive used this since win 8.1 and it works fine.

Xbox controller manager

By default the 360 wireless pad stays on once you shut dwn windows wasting battery unless you remove the bats/power pack. This tool shows the battery level and allows you to shut off the pad by holding down the guide button. Just press A when it prompts you.
For windows 10 follow the guide in the comments on the home page to 'trick' windows and it treats it like a game which the dvr will respond too tho instead the app will work.

Edit:

Ok just to be clear heres hw i got it working.

1. Add the app to startup folder. Run cmd shell:startup and place a shortcut to the app inside the startup folder for win10. The program now loads with win10

2.load chrome, press and hold the guide button on the controller. The game bar will appear check yes this is a game, then click on the settings icon.

3. Check remember this selection ( cant recall the exact description)

4. Close chrome, And reopen now press win key + g. Then click the settings icon. Uncheck remember this selection and this is a game.

5. Close chrome. Now if you hold the guide button for about 2 secs. The dialog appears and you can see the battery level and also turn off the pad.

Definitely worse, but it's a workaround.

Is it just me or are Metro apps really slow? It's quicker for me to open up a browser and Google my local weather than it is to open up the Weather app (sometimes I want more information than the live tile gives me), and often times the app just ends up crashing or being unresponsive. When it's quicker to get into a game of Team Fortress 2 than it is to get into a game of Minesweeper, you know something's fucked up. I don't even recall it being this bad in Windows 8, so what the hell happened?

I installed windows 10 today and when trying to stream from my xbox one I get this kind of image:

Does anyone have a similar problem? The picture shows up fine on my tv...

Yep, they are just too slow, probably as slow as my iphone.

Man...my work computer and tablet both got updated to Win10 already, but my home desktop and laptop....still waiting! Tried multiple times to force the update through various ways I found online but none have worked so far. :[

Use the ISO, mount it and launch setup.exe.

How do I delete Windows.old folder? I've tried CCleaner and I tried Disc Cleanup. Whenever I try to manually delete it it says I need Administrative access but I'm the only user and I'm an admin :|

Make sure you have the best Graphics drivers, or even try reinstalling them

Couldn't sort out that network card problem so did a fresh install and everything is now hunky dory...well, apart from the 197 updates it's now downloading and installing lol

Forgot to copy all of my Firefox bookmarks though which is bloomin annoying :o(

Also have a problem with my HDMI Out on my GPU, got picture but no sound. Will wait for these updates to finish before I have a look at that lol
