Upgrade to Windows 10?

Need some help.

I'm currently on windows 8 ( not 8.1) because I have trouble every time I do the update to 8.1, screen goes black after the reboot and then I have to revert back to 8.0 as an error comes. It seems to be a common problem with some systems by doing a Google search.

Anyway, my question is will I be able to upgrade to windows 10 from 8.0?

No you cannot upgrade from 8.0 as far as MS information goes.

Ok, so I somehow have to get 8.1 installed.

The windows store tile isn't displayed in metro, I can't seem to find it even with a search.

*double post*

EDIT: what? The hell happened to my other post.

Re-sent: Can I create an image and upgrade from that without affecting my current OS? I really want to get hyper-V.

I had to find a link on the Microsoft website to open the store app.

Really don't feel like installing 8.0 from fresh, installing all updates, downloading/installing all games again, etc,

I'm trying the update again, I think it has been downloaded, now it's just saying ' Getting the update ready'.

see how I go, I might have to take my PC to the shop if it doesn't update successfully.

My personal experience of Windows 10 so far has been pretty positive. There's some issues with the insider preview builds, as well, its obviously still in development right now. But, it's minor stuff. Most of the problems I've had so far are due to nvidia's W10 beta drivers as they seem pretty crash heavy in a couple of situations: Using DSR in Diablo 3 literally crashes the application and the driver. Witcher 3's use of volumetric fog in some areas cause some mental 10-15 second hang ups in one or two places and has even hard locked my machine once.

Overall though, Windows 10 is a dramatic improvement from Windows 8. Adaptive window snapping (it figures out how big your first window is, then dynamically sizes the second next to it, rather than having to be 50/50) is amazing and it's super quick.

You are more than fine for standard work (web browsing, music, movies and even Photoshop).

I am using Windows 10 preview version on three different laptops – weakest one, my wife’s machine, is with Dual Core Pentium T4500 processor, Intel GMA 4500M and 3GB ram. It runs the last two or three Win 10 builds better than Window 7.

For gaming and working every day with Unreal 4, I am using my Lenovo Y50 with GTX960m, Intel Core i7-4720HQ, 16GB ram and 250GB SSD drive and minus a couple instances, compatibility with the last update is almost perfect.

Win 10 10130 (latest build) is far from ‘bug free’ through

This REALLY helps me so much! Thanks!!

I've been using a Win 10 computer at work for a couple of weeks now, and I'm loving it. Def gonna upgrade day one, just gotta get a new SSD before that.

Getting a new PC around Christmas. Doing a fresh Win 7 install then. Is it possible to upgrade to Win 10 at that later date?

Just an an update, it didn't work again. Now it's saying ' restoring your previous version of windows'. Now it's been like this for 5mins, I think it's stuck, it never used to take this long before.

So Win 10 is more efficient than 7.

But is Win 10 more efficient than 8.1? All of the stuff they're jamming it with such as Cortana and XboxOne stuff seem to be system-based, but I have no interest in turning my PC into an extension of a console. I just want an even more efficient version of Win 8.1.

Someone already posted the link I was going to post but from the look of things, as of now maybe but it seems AMD cards are getting greater benefits or it might be because Project Cars is a more CPU bound game and CPU utilization is one of the things W10 is supposed to improve on. I haven't seen any comparisons since NVIDIA released their WHQL W10 drivers. It seems to be at least on par with 8.1 from what I have seen.

Eh, not really true. Windows 10 is outperformed by both 8.1 and 7 in gaming benchmarks.

I know you're banned but that article was from nearly nine months ago...

Definitely get Windows 10, especially if you are on 7. I like to stay on he most supported path, and Win10 will have a lot of new features that relate specifically to gamers like DirectX 12 and better integration with XBox services. It's an essential upgrade as far as I'm concerned.

I also have Linux and installing windows 10 over w7 will mess the boot sector. i'll wait when there is a guide on how to restore it.
Have currently win xp, win 7 and ubuntu installed

Out of interest, do you use a smartphone?

No, just a 6 year old Nokia with Symbian

So, I have that little icon, urging me to "Get Windows 10." It's apparently free. I've been sticking with Windows 7 for years now, with no complaints. I feel this decision served me well through the sometimes rocky Windows 8 updates.

Is it time to upgrade? Is Windows 10 worthy to replace my beloved Windows 7?

(I'm speaking from a gaming perspective, of course)

The upgrade is free to all Windows 7&8 users for a year — I recommend you hold off on upgrading until a few months in.

Try out in the Insider Preview. The latest build is pretty stable (should be getting a new one soon...I really need a new phone preview...but whatevs). See if you like it. It's really a mesh of the best of Windows 7 and Windows 8 into one.
Slightly OT but I had the preview on my lumia 930 and had to switch back as it was so bad, this was about a month ago (if not more). Currently rocking a lumia 435 while my 930 gets fixed, has there been any improvements in WP10?

Can we conjure an .ISO from the upgrade process?

Currently the info we have points to licenses stored with MS against unique hardware identification codes. Meaning that once you upgrade to 10, that PC can fresh install 10 without a key. Of course the problem comes when a part fails, depending on what MS uses for the HW ID code, it could mean a new license is required when replacing/upgrading. So we have to wait for now to get more information. This is where "updates for the device lifetime" comes into play.

It doesnt make sense having to install my old Win 7 license to install 10 again. So MS would have thought of this.

This link says the exact opposite actually:

So if you upgrade your PC there will be no way of doing a clean install of Win10 and there will be no free upgrade from a clean install of Win7/8 after 1/Aug/2016.

This more and more looks like a scam scheme on MS's part - gift the copies of Win10 to most of Windows users at first and then, after people upgrade their H/W, make them buy new copies of Win10 since old licenses won't work anymore and it's unlikely that anyone will want to step back to Win7/8 after a year or so on Win10.

Screw that. I'll stick with my copy of Windows 8 that I actually own instead of going through the hassle of a long term lease of windows 10 before having to revert back to 8.

Do you still use Win XP? Are there really programs that doesn't work as they should with win 7?

Some old Japanese doujin games run only on Windows XP.
It is also a faster OS overall. It has less memory usage and Microsoft bloatware than 7.
The most important is that it has less input lag even with Vsync off. For fighting games like SF4 I prefer playing on Windows XP.

Its possible itll be like Windows 7, you just phone them up and tell them your PC HDD died and they will re-activate.

I heard all preview copies will a get a free upgrade, too.

I 'll think I finally get a 500GB SSD, put the prevview on it and wait for the update. That way the install is "fresh" and my old Win7 is still on a another drive and unharmed.

So on Windows 7 with Aero enabled, you essentially get automatic V-sync for any windowed-mode games because of how the desktop compositor works. If you want to disable v-sync for windowed mode, you can disable desktop composition (disable Aero).

But I've heard that on Windows 10, there's no way to disable that, and so there's no way around having v-sync behavior on windowed games. Is that true?

I'm upgrading.

It's free and I still have my retail boxed Windows 7 edition, along with my retail boxed Windows XP edition, along with my retail boxed Windows 98 SE and my retail boxed Windows 95.

What do I have to lose? If it sucks, I reinstall Windows 7. And since I have a SSD now, the install process will be a breeze. In fact, I have my whole SSD backed up onto a 1TB HDD, so we're talking about a 1-hour restore, if that. More like 45 minutes.

Being on Windows 7, I'm already missing out on DX11. Win 10 gets me DX11 AND DX12.

This is a total no-brainer. For me anyway.

Bring on Windows 10!

EDIT:

On a side note...

What will Microsoft do if Motherboards become Plug and Play compatible?

Even now, if you know how to tweak drivers for the most basic support, you can swap out a whole mobo and CPU without losing your OS on the HDD/SSD. There are guides that show you how to do this without having to reinstall your OS. What happens to Windows licensing then, when you can upgrade your mobo without having to wipe your OS?

Or does Win 10 have a built-in killswitch that will recognize a mobo switch and auto-disable your existing OS installation?

Today the update icon appeared to my laptop that has 8.1. How does the update work? Do I lose all the files from the C-drive?

No, users of the preview will be able to upgrade to the final version, something that wasn't possible with 8 (well it was and I did but you had to apply some unofficial tweaks). But that doesn't mean that you'll get a valid license for free.

Nope it'll just upgrade like, say, a service pack would.

I've installed multiple versions of w10 without an issue, each one on top of the other. Love it.

K, thanks. I do have a W7 and a W8 key - I just want to start with a fresh install. So can I activate W10 from W10 preview with these keys? I just don't like upgrading a current system (8.1 upgrade was horrible for me and I lost a lot of stuff, so went back to 7).

You have a year to get it for free so it doesn't hurt to wait.

My understanding is that it's feature complete and they will be working on bug fixes only for the next month till release.

Drivers might be an issue depending on your setup.

A year out it will definitely be stable though so you aren't really hurt by waiting if stability is a big concern for you.

Keep in mind the large majority of Windows owners will never do a fresh install.

While this is true, it doesn't make the tactic of converting my retail key into an OEM any less crappy.

I'd rather they just offer us a discounted license for $25 at the outset than the free upgrade.

Why not let me convert my W8 key into a W10?

Good question, my guess is no. You might need to first install W8 or 7, 'convert' that key to W10 and then do a clean W10 install.

I already opted in the first day this thing rolled out. It says it will download but I can install it whenever right?

I don't want to automatically start up my computer at the end of July and it be trying to install windows 10 on it's own.

From the upgrade assistant: "Install it right away or pick a time that's good for you."
