Upgrade to Windows 10?

For the record, I use a Mac book air that had windows 8 pro installed. Used the link in this thread to download Windows 10 and it worked flawlessly for me. Iwas expecting issues being a Mac user, but it went fantastically.
 
I've updated through the command prompt and never asked for the key, but now the issue is when I checked my windows activation it says "Connect to the Internet to activate Windows". If i try to manual activate it it says "Windows can't activate. Try again later." any one has this issue?

No it's a 8.1 Pro key, I made sure it wasn't due to Dreamspark shenanigans, but the Pro editions offered are the real deal as far as Microsoft is concerned so it's not that either. Maybe I selected the wrong language in the ISO creator tool, they're listed as English on my Dreamspark page

Edit: Can't use those tools, the Platform Isn't Supported :lol.

How microsoft makes money is really of no concern to me. I'm sure they'll manage just fine.

But seeing Solitaire riddled with ads and prompts to pay fees for coin doublers and other trinkets just really makes me shudder somehow. Is the entire OS going to be cheapened with microtransactions in this way in the future? I personally hope not, do you?

Mine activated as soon as I restarted.

Did you have a legit activated 8.1 copy? Maybe their activation servers are bogged down.

Yeah, I suppose it's fine that each driver seems to be a bit of an improvement. I'm just worried that maybe the NEXT drivers will turn out to be horrible and I want to revert back to THIS version by doing a manual install. I suspect I'll run into the same problem where my cards aren't recognized.

But I'll cross that bridge when I get there I suppose.

Other than that, the update from 7 -> 10 has been great. I LOVE that everything is borderless.

I had a problem with that when I first installed windows 10. I came in with the OS not recognizing my card, seemingly installing drivers itself and still not showing the Nvidia drivers or control panel. I just Display Driver Uninstalled every bit of the Nvidia drivers and clean installed the new one.
 
Why am I such a dumb boob. Why don't I just download the install files from dreamspark. FFS, I feel stupid as shit right now :lol
 
I upgradet my Desktop PC (i5 3570k / gtx 970) and my Ultrabook (i5 4200u) to Win 10 Pro today (both from win 8.1 Pro).

Everything went fine (so far) and after the Upgrade I used a Key Finder to check for the new win 10 pro key and to my surprise it was the excat same key on both PCs.

WTF?!
 
Win 10 upgrade done using media tool. Is it safe to now delete windows.old folder? I just noticed my free space on SSD dropped from 65GB to 40GBm
 
I hovered my mouse over the windows updates icon and it says windows is downloading updates 42%. So i'm just gonna wait for that to finish. I got my windows key though. Downloaded a program to find it. Then used control panel to get rid of the program.
 
Oh shit, Windows 10 is up on Dreamspark. THANK GOD. It literally just went up, when I checked to get my 8.1 key they still had the technical preview, but they replaced it with the full version now :)

Edit: What's the difference between Windows 10 EDU and Windows 10 Multiple Editions? Anyone know?

Edit #2: I think it might just be called Multiple Editions because you get access to both 64 and 32 bit Windows. Previous one didn't use that naming scheme though. Odd.
 
I love lots of things about Windows 10 but I've had issues with Ark: Survival Evolved and Rocket League. This is with the latest AMD drivers and a few older versions too. The display management for multiple screens is also... a little bit shit. Though of course I can do that within the AMD control panel.

I'm going to wait for things to settle before making the change, I'm back to Windows 8.1 for now.

Here's a few tips to fix things that annoyed me and may annoy others:

Remove OneDrive from Windows 10:

Also noticed Xbox app that is on there by default (and reinstalls itself if you remove it in PowerShell). This has caused me some problems with games due to the game DVR feature (CS:GO won't load). Open msconfig.exe, goto services and de-select all the Xbox services.

Everything in your documents folder stays where it is, but installed programs and such is moved to Windows.old. So apart from your personal folder Windows.old is essentially the old C:\
 
Upgraded from Windows 7 and I don’t even know if I ever had such a smooth transition from one OS to another before. I didn’t need to reinstall a single thing, since everything works perfectly. I wasn’t informed about what changes Win10 would bring and so far it feels more like a small update, rather than something completely new. Outside of the improved interface, which looks nice, it’s the same experience as before and I’m happy with that.
 
So I'm not rushing to upgrade but I did reserve it. I just went into my event viewer however and I'm seeing windows trying to download and install win10 in the background. Is this normal behaviour? It says the update failed, thank god, but I'm scared one of these days I'm just going to wake up to a pc in the middle of the W10 upgrade process without actually asking me. Surely it doesn't just automatically update to W10 without user input right?

By failed it just means it has failed the final install phase (as in asking you if you want to install). It won't randomly install on anyone.

Yeah, I successfully updated last night and it never asked for a key once. I was slightly concerned because my $windows folder wouldn't exceed 140MB for what felt like the longest time. But it definitely climbed 20-30 mins after. When it stopped moving I used "wuauclt.exe /updatenow" in cmd prompt to push the update. When I went to Windows Update, it showed it was downloading, but then it failed. I quickly found out that if you go into windows/software distribution/download and delete everything in the download folder, it will re-download everything. When you go back into Windows Update it should begin downloading again. I had to do this twice considering I received an error the first go around. Everything is solid on my end now, I just want to mess with it more.

It downloads it so for if/when you do update it, you don't have to download it first. You don't worry about it stealth updating while you sleep.
 
I got windows 10 install in my surface and my labtop, but when I went to install on my main computer it says that Windows is going out in waves. Is there anyway around this where I can just install on my computer now?
 
Installing at the moment. Got to 100% now just been stuck on a black screen with nothing else. Anyone else had this? Not sure how long to give it before turning it off.

If you are using Realtek HD audio like most people, check their website. I installed the latest W10 driver just to be safe.

Yes, use the force method in OP at the bottom by deleting the contents of a folder and running a prompt.
 
I guess I'll hold off installing W10 for a day or two looking at all the RNG if it's working or causing issues or whatnot.

Also a question, all those with issues, did you force the install before windows said it was ready? I would assume windows looks at your PC and things needed like drivers and such for it to be fully operational before allowing the install to proceed.
 
Sweet. All I had to do in the end was buy Windows 10 from Dreamspark (100% discount, ty based University) and put in the new key and it was accepted. No need to fuss around with reinstalls, thank god. For anyone wondering, I can confirm that the "Multiple Editions" key is a Win10 Pro key.

Only almost every install. Twice I actually forced my computer to turn off (held the power button) restarted it and the install went by without a hitch. Another time I just let it sit there and it eventually continued. You should do the second option, I don't want to be responsible for potentially fucking your Windows install :lol

Do you have a second screen connected to your PC? If so, try turning it on to see if it changed the default monitor.

If not, I've seen people talking about waiting an hour and rebooting, and it was fine.
