Upgrade to Windows 10?

If you delete Windows.old folder after upgrade and choose to keep nothing from the previous installation, is it considered as a clean install?

You could very well consider it a clean install, but is there a particular definition of the term that you need to fulfill for some reason?

dang, so I added an extra 8GB of memory to my computer and win 10 became invalidated. I thought only motherboard changes or main windows partition/HDD would revoke the key. :(

Just call Microsoft and they'll validate the Win10 install.

So I am back on windows 8.1 with classic shell installed, its not so bad. Just wonder if windows 8.1 will get some of the directx 12 updates?

No.

Does anyone know if I have Win8 and I install win 10, and then after the period for free win 10 expires, I format the computer, will I still have the option to upgrade on clean win 8 install?

Once you upgrade to 10 (free within the one year period), you'll have a Windows 10 product key (associated with your hardware). You can then re-install Windows 10 at your leisure.

I'm not sure whether the 10 upgrade notification/download will automatically come up in the future, but you could still upgrade via manual download of the installer/ISO.

So ive been using W10 for a week now and I love it. Its seems a good bit faster than Win7 that ive been using for years and I love the overall polish.

Yep, once you upgrade to 10 for the first time then your computer information gets saved onto MS servers so it will always be able to activate 10. You can either choose to do a fresh format from the settings/upgrade/recovery screen or create a windows 10 boot disk and install that way.

what data tracking worries you?

What indeed. maybe you know? They can install anything on my comp and the only option offered is when to reboot or not.

Also what is this? You can't turn it off, basic is the lowest setting. I'll go back onto W10 if you know what basic collection means. I like how for feedback, you can disable it (because they don't give a shit what you say) but when it comes to getting info, your only option here is how much of it but they don't specify what Basic is.

Once you upgrade, your Windows 8 key becomes a 10 key. Then, you can just do a clean install of 10. You don't need to go through 8 again.

For FireFox users, this fixes the tearing seen in FireFox 40 and newer due to FF having blocked the old driver version from using HW acceleration.
Thanks for the heads up. YouTube was tearing like crazy even in fullscreen since the forced HTML5 change, and Flash had been fine before that.

Yeah the forced auto-updates are pretty iffy, especially when it installs drivers you don't want. Fortunately there's this Microsoft tool to disable individual updates, and it seemed to work for me.

Also Microsoft does specify what Basic device data, and specifies it pretty well, when you click on that "Learn more about feedback & diagnostics settings" link.
Basic information is data that is vital to the operation of Windows. This data helps keep Windows and apps running properly by letting Microsoft know the capabilities of your device, what is installed, and whether Windows is operating correctly. This option also turns on basic error reporting back to Microsoft. If you select this option, we’ll be able to provide updates to Windows (through Windows Update, including malicious software protection by the Malicious Software Removal Tool), but some apps and features may not work correctly or at all.

Enhanced data includes all Basic data plus data about how you use Windows, such as how frequently or how long you use certain features or apps and which apps you use most often. This option also lets us collect enhanced diagnostic information, such as the memory state of your device when a system or app crash occurs, as well as measure reliability of devices, the operating system, and apps. If you select this option, we’ll be able to provide you with an enhanced and personalized Windows experience.

Full data includes all Basic and Enhanced data, and also turns on advanced diagnostic features that collect additional data from your device, such as system files or memory snapshots, which may unintentionally include parts of a document you were working on when a problem occurred. This information helps us further troubleshoot and fix problems. If an error report contains personal data, we won’t use that information to identify, contact, or target advertising to you. This is the recommended option for the best Windows experience and the most effective troubleshooting.

You mean like that link below that with "Learn more about feedback & diagnostic settings" where it is clearly explained?

Also, your data is still being tracked even when not on Windows 10. The same argument applies for previous Windows versions, they can install anything they want.

Soo, this is a bit strange.

I upgraded a few days ago, everything went smoothly and i really like the new OS.

Now, i often use VNC Viewer to connect to the PC's at work and I just used it on monday, no issue at all.

On Tuesday, VNC was..gone. Link was gone. Files had disappeared.
It was nowhere to be found. Not in any program folder.

It's no big deal, i just downloaded it again and reinstalled (bookmarks were still there) but is it possible that Win 10 just decided to remove the software without warning ??

I've just built a new PC and installed Windows 10 Pro on a USB using Microsoft's creation tool. When I go to boot it up on my new PC, after "starting" the download, it tells me I need to install a media driver before continuing. Does anyone know what to do with this issue? It won't let me do anything else.

Try plugging into a usb2 port and not usb3, I've had this before with usb3 or Usb(super speed) ports :)
Hope this helps

how the fuck do I remove the notification to upgrade to Windows 10?
I'm not able to upgrade (because I run windows on mac, and so far its not very compatible with windows 10)

It's getting annoying.

I keep running into the issue where the start menu and cortana stop responding. clicking on them does nothing, and the only way to get them back is to shut off the computer and then turn it back on.

notice I didn't say restart, because the computer went actually shut down correctly in these instances. it just hangs saying an unnamed app is preventing shut down, and then you can get out of the shut down screen, do you have to power off manually.

I had to get rid of Easytune 6 as it does not work with W10 in the current version. Besides this no problems whatsoever. Pretty happy with my upgrade!

Yeah the Windows 10 upgrade process can uninstall software. Fortunately it leaves the files in Windows.old so it's easy to identify and reinstall the removed software.

But it didn't happen during the upgrade process, which i could understand.
I used VNC in Windows 10 one day, the next day it was gone.

Did you do any malware scanning? I've had Malware scanners flag VNC apps (specifically WinVNC) as potentially unwanted programs before and I had to uncheck them to keep them from being removed. I think Malwarebytes did this at one point.

Nope.. Did a complete system deep scan with antivirus and malwarebytes before upgrading, just a couple warnings and vnc was not among those and was still working just fine afterwards.
Weird.
Very.

Upgraded my laptop from 8. So far my laptop has been performing much better with basic tasks than it was with 8 installed. The only thing that's bothering me is I can't see my battery percentage in the task bar and when I go to add it, the option is greyed out :(

I take back what I said. A number of games bought on Steam don't launch anymore. Bulletstorm being the most recent I discovered.

I had the same issue and found out it is connected to Microsoft's so-called "hybrid startup/shutdown", which is on by default. I'm not on my PC right now, but IIRC you should uncheck the option named "enable/turn on fast startup" under power settings.

Thanks for this tip. That fixed my shutdown issue.

Did you DL and install them after upgrading to W10 or did you just bring them over from your previous OS? Bulletstorm is a GFWL title so of course that could play a factor as well. I've been able to get Halo 2 working on my W10 so it's not like GFWL titles won't work at all.

Thought I'd try to upgrade back to Windows 10...ethernet connection wouldn't work. Rolled back to Windows 7....works fine.

This is AFTER I've already used Windows 10 for over a week with no problems.

WTF?

No, pre-existing install. So since GFWL is dead, how do I re-download the PC version of Gears of War?! Is it possible to re-install that one?

so far so good for me on my gaming PC, the only minor issue i have is on startup my corsair link for my watercooling loads and the rad fans go full chat, happens until i click on each of the fans icons and they reset to my custom curve,

Odd

Upgraded to W10 yesterday evening and so far everything is working as it should. Haven't had time to test many games but the 10 or so I tried (from 2009 onwards) work without issues.

I will say upgrading to 10 made HOTS run a lot better on my 970. Don't know why but on windows 7 it would drop frames like crazy sometimes which was surprising to say the least.

geezus

how can my surface 3 lose 30% battery life in the 45 minutes after It went to "sleep" allegedly and went into hibernation 45 minutes after that? and then I woke it up 7 hours later...battery depleted.

wtf is going on with this battery?

it was perfect before w10

I heard that there is a feature that let me roll back automatic from Windows 10 to my old system when the performance isnt that good... is this true? Since there are no Compatiblity tools around, I think about just try to update and just roll back when my system isnt working well enough.

I would download the client here, then install and see if you can login and download your games. I'm not at home or I would try it for you. I know it worked for me on Win8 to get Gears.

What's kinect support like for this?
You can use it to navigate the metro style interface, right?

Doesn't matter in any case. Even with everything shut off, Windows 10 has been shown to still send data back to MS servers. I don't trust this OS. Not one little tiny bit. MS has to prove to me that they aren't doing anything nefarious before I will touch this with a 10 ft pole!

- My start menu now has very large icons whenever I search for something. Some shortcuts don't show up, like Itunes for example.
- Skype has a memory crash error whenever I shutdown the computer. The error message is not clicked will make the computer refuse to shutdown
- Rebooting the computer makes the computer idle for 30 seconds before finally resetting

Anyone know what's up?

I had this issue a week or so ago. The fixes I found online didn't help, so I just rolled back my computer to the latest restore point. Worked for me.

That's exactly what I just did and now it's fixed. The restore point I chose said "Installed DirectX"

Weird. Bit worried about that but everything is fine for now....

EDIT:

Now Pin More is crashing whenever I try to add a new steam game to my start menu. Steam Tile is working though....

GFWL is not dead. I'm playing Gears on Windows 10 without issues at all.
No visual or stability issues.

It's dead in a sense that it's a piece of crap and it won't ever improve since they've stopped working on it. I've had to do a hard reset yesterday while setting up GTA IV in Win10 because of this shit. It truly illustrates that MS should be kept as far away from PC gaming as humanly possible.

Upgraded to Windows 10. Downloaded new nvidia drivers. Bizarrely, sound is now carried through the HDMI cable and comes out from my monitor's speakers.

My PC also isn't randomly turning itself on any more.

All in all, pretty pleased with the update.

Did a clean install too, which probably helped.

It's indeed a sad piece of garbage that should have never been in the first place, and sometimes I believe PC gaming is far better off without Microsoft but recently I think they can do a lot of good to the platform.
I like W10 thus far and they are willing to bring some of their games to their latest OS. I'm not hostile to them trying to challenge Steam for instance.

However they'll never commit fully to PC gaming as they can't control like like their Xbox walled garden.

Hotdang! I was just typing a post where I was scolding Creative for their inability to create proper Windows 10-drivers after more than a year of OS-betas, but just as I double checked their Windows 10 driver-page I saw that their drivers are available! ONLY A MONTH AFTER LAUNCH!!

This is incredible, for Creative! Of course not all of their products are supported, some people still have to wait until september before their hardware works properly....

But I'm just glad I won't have to deal with all the crackling and popping anymore.

Windows 10 has been great so far apart from a few issues.

  1. I insert a USB stick and nothing happens
  2. I insert a disc and nothing happens

I tried turning on and off autoplay, but it didn't work. Usually (on any other OS) if something didn't load automatically, I would go to My Computer and double click on the USB/DISC icon and run it manually, but even that doesn't appear.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
