I have to say, Windows 10 has been working great on my laptop since installing a few months ago. Once you get over the hump of "where is THAT at now?", it's been great. All my games and old software work flawlessly and it's quite speedy.
Unfortunately, the privacy concerns about it are very real and I don't use anyof the default programs loaded with the OS (mail, edge, the "store", cortana, etc) and I use a local account. They are trying to be like Google, and grabbing any data they can mine from you while you use their OS...it's very insidious and I hope they get called to task for it (they won't). I won't install it on my main PC but am happy to use it on the laptop I use 3-4 times a week.

I've been using the Microsoft Security Essentials for the past few years without any issues.
It has alerted me to questionable .exe's a couple times too, mostly the ones that are brand new and haven't had many installs yet. (like brand new updates or whatnot)

I prefer the light, low-resource stuff because I pretty much filter everything that enters my system myself. I hate stuff like Norton's Internet Security because it's is a really HEAVY program that wants to scan everything all the time and it bogs down your CPU.

I don't have many issues with it. However they decided to keep the traditional system settings from 7, but also have the more modern system settings which started with Windows 8, and I wished they would have just merged them for consistency. I also think having updates in two places is a pain. Windows app updates are separated from system updates.

Windows 10 works amazingly...after you set all of the privacy settings/etc. Works just as good or better than Windows 7. I hate 8/8.1. If you need a better reason to upgrade: DX12.

I would love nothing more than to abandon windows for linux but I depend on a lot of win-exclusive software so sadly it's not an option for the time being.
I get by pretty well with just the built-in Defender and occasional MBAM scans. I used to use Avast but I got tired of its steady descent into nagware.

Edge's implementation makes it seem like even the PC version is catered towards touch screens. Not sure what browser I'm gonna use, as I stopped using Chrome over a year ago.
I set up my start menu but idk. I liked the start menu, I actually liked the start screen, I kinda wish I had the option for both instead of jammed together. It was nice having all my icons and tickers spread out over a full screen.

I liked it too. But you can change it!
Start > Settings > Personalization > Start > Use Start full screen

Panda is awesome. Lightweight, nonintrusive, and effective. I can't remember the last time Panda gave me an "upgrade to pro" screen.
Also I reinitialized my start menu to default the other day, and now it can correctly look up all my pinned programs from the search bar. That was the only bug that I had left on my laptop, everything else is smooth and awesome.
I've got a dual boot system with 8.1 and 10 and at this point I'm sticking with 8.1 until 10 gets out of beta testing. (little sarcasm there.) Anyway it has been anything but free of trouble and I actually did a clean install on a second drive. Let's see, the latest issue I have now is that the start button and apps like edge and the calculator don't work. (I guess they're all those universal apps.) I got around this in part by installing classic shell. (Yes, I know about sfc /scannow which didn't fix the problem.) The weird part is if I log into a different account the start menu works. Apparently this is a known bug and has been around for a while, too bad they still can't fix it.

How does windows 10 run on older hardware, I have a computer from 2009 with a core2duo and an nvidia geforce 9400 running windows 7. Is windows 10 more efficient on older specs compared to windows 7?

Well I fucked up. My Windows 7 Premium wouldn't update by itself to Windows 10 even tho I have a reserved copy so I used a Windows 10 ISO to install it. Problem is Windows 10 won't accept my Windows 7 product key and I'm left with an inactive Win 10. And there's no option to revert to Windows 7 despite having a Windows.old folder.

Since upgrading to Windows 10, my LoL and HOTS gaming days are over. I get occasional stuttering with my frames to where it makes the game unplayable. All my drivers are up to date and I feel like I have tried everything. All my other games run just fine without any kind of stuttering or lag.

Windows 7 came with my Asus motherboard. Had the notification to reserve a Windows 10 copy, I reserved but it wouldn't ever let me upgrade.
ISO was a burnt copy from my friend, he said he downloaded it with the media creation tools.

So, I'm currently replaying Witcher 3 NG+ on Death March out of boredom, and finally reached Novigrad. To my surprise, performance is way better than it was last year. I still remember that the game was running at 27-28 fps right here previously, and now it's at 33 fps. Settings are still the same or at least similar, with mostly high-ultra with hairworks on. On top of that, I'm using several mods and a Reshade right now. Reshade alone costs me about 3-5 fps. Not sure if it's because of the patches (it was on 1.6 previously) or the new Windows 10. I heard some rumors about Windows 10 improving performance in some games.
What did the reservation do when you say it "didn't let you upgrade"?
Just that my reservation is confirmed and that they will let me know when I can upgrade. It was as if Windows 10 was never released, it's been like this ever since MS started the Win 10 reservation program.
My patience ran out so I chose to upgrade manually.

The performance difference from Win7 -> Win8 -> Win10 is pretty small but it generally has slightly improved. Though, we're talking about <1ms difference so it's something you most likely won't notice unless you compare benchmark numbers before/after.
Only thing I could think is that if you were previously on Win7 and The Witcher takes advantage of DX 11.1 features (which were in Win8.1 and Win10) you may be seeing a boost from that.
But still, a decrease of 5ms on your frame times (taking reshade into account) is pretty good.
Do you use Windows Update at all? Did it show anything? Have you ever modified your registry or somesuch?
What edition of Windows 10 did you install? Home or Pro?

Depends on what you compare Win10 to. Compared to Win7 yeah there is a performance boost in some DX11 games - specifically those based on Frostbite3 engine as it is using some features of DX11.2 which is unavailable on Win7. Compared to Win8 - not much has changed in gaming performance of Win10.
the fact that I would need stuff like this is a big warning sign to me. Can someone list some compelling reasons for upgrading?
I managed to wing getting an SSD in my work PC which runs on a 2nd gen i5 because it was hanging all the time.

Same I don't even use malwarebytes anymore. I can't remember the last time a had a virus or malware. SE is no maintenance and works well for me.

It performs well on older hardware, the UI is better for folks who hated the Start Screen, DX12, almost all of your programs should function fine*, you get the backend improvements from Windows 8 if you skipped from 7 to 10, and upgrading is still free right now.
*I say "almost all" because it's entirely possible for programs to break because they were designed to use some workarounds that get nuked by either how Windows 10 is setup or updates to Windows 10.

What version of W10 did you install and what version of W7 did you have? Is your copy of W10 activated?
In any case: the upgrade rolls out successively and is dependent on your hardware, installed updates etc. That means if you don't have a certain update installed or have certain hardware that requires drivers that aren't available on W10 yet, Windows won't initiate the upgrade for you. There are several ways to manually start the upgrade process though: you can force it through the registry (which probably is the best method right now) or use the Media Creation Tool to put W10 on your computer so you can upgrade directly from Windows (or USB/DVD). You can't upgrade with a clean install.
Whichever method you choose, make sure to have a backup USB/DVD with the proper Windows 10 version on it, just in case. When you've upgraded you can do a clean install with the USB/DVD (no key required, just internet access).
Now, if you installed W10 without upgrading (i.e. it's not activated) you have to install Windows 7 again, with your W7 product key. You never enter your W7 key anywhere during the upgrade process, the upgrade process just upgrades your license server-side and identifies you by hardware ID.
What about those of us who got the free upgrade from the win7 update back in the day? I think my key is saved, and my usb is 16gb. I'm having some game performance issues and small hiccups in the os itself occasionally.
Edit: I did the soft upgrade without removing win7 first.
I don't really see a compelling reason in there. I run on win 7 and there just isn't any point into upgrading at all. thanks for answering though.
with vista at least it ran like shit, so it made a lot of sense to upgrade to win7.

If Windows 10 is activated on your machine (and you intend to do a clean install on the same machine) you can just download the Media Creation Tool and put W10 on a USB-device/DVD. Make sure to pick your edition of W10.
You don't have to enter a key or anything. When it asks for a key, you can just skip it. When you connect to the internet Windows will be activated.
If you want to make a clean install on a new computer (or the same computer with a new motherboard, CPU or something) you have to contact Microsoft Support and they will guide you through the process.
On Windows 10, press the Windows key and type "Reset", and open "Reset this PC". I did this a couple of weeks ago as the Windows 10 games weren't giving me achievements (very important!), and it basically does a factory reset of your PC like on your phone or tablet.
I didn't think it would work at first, but it completely formatted my C: drive, and left a clean install as if I had just done a new one.

Did reseting fix the achievment problem? I just finished Rise of the Tomb Raider and didnt get one achievment

Have you tried completely removing the Xbox app through Powershell? I had a few gaming problems before doing that.
Yeah, I put my OS and steam games on a 1TB samsung 850 EVO, did a fresh install of Windows 7 and I will simply never be able to go back. It's the single biggest performance increase I've ever had with a PC.
I've got another one coming for my PS4, we'll see how that goes.
