US Lumines details/confirmation

Play-Asia is selling the Japanese Lumines for $50, so you could just get that instead of worrying about the changes that the US version might have.

As someone who talked about the US version of Lumines with Miz....I think the following:

1) Licensing issues will be worked out. Mondo Grosso and Eri Nobuchika are BOTH signed to Sony Music. That being said, Lights may be rerecorded. I might send some emails out tonight and see if I can get to the bottom of any musical changes. No promises.

2) I DOUBT it will be 50 dollars. There is no minimum price on PSP games, and third parties are free to sell their games for whatever price they like as long as they pay sony their fees. However, even if it is $50, you should by the game and enjoy it. BUY THE US VERSION! I am buying it again just because I believe in the game and I want Miz to be able to keep making experimental games like Lumines.

3) Mizuguchi is very very focused on his games, and I HIGHLY DOUBT he would let Ubisoft screw the game up. If there are changes, I would bet that Mizuguchi is directing them starting right about now. They had about 2 weeks left on Meteos back on 1/15 before the delay, so they should be finishing now. That gives them about 4-5 weeks to make any changes to Lumines if they haven't started already.

If you find anything out, can you try to see if they'll be adding in a save anytime feature during the main skin-unlocking mode?

San Francisco - February 9, 2005 - Today, Ubisoft, one of the world’s leading videogame publishers, announced that it has signed an exclusive agreement with Bandai Company, Ltd. to publish Lumines for the PSP™ handheld entertainment system. The critically acclaimed music and luminary action puzzle Lumines is slated for release in the United States in March 2005 and was jointly developed by Bandai Company Ltd. and Q ENTERTAINMENT, under the creative direction of renowned developer Tetsuya Mizuguchi.

"Ubisoft is extremely excited to partner with Bandai and Q ENTERTAINMENT to bring Lumines for the PSP handheld system to consumers," said James Regan, director of new business development at Ubisoft. "Ubisoft delivers superior products that are immersive, exciting and unique, and Lumines is a natural fit for us."

Lumines brings a unique puzzle experience to PSP handheld system owners, offering gameplay reminiscent of Tetris while including new innovations and enhancements in technology that fuse music, puzzles and luminescence. Users are challenged to delete blocks from the game screen while grooving to evolving musical scores of rock, techno and pop grooves. Lumines offers numerous levels of graphics and music with single-player, wireless multi- player and bonus modes. Earn changeable skins and increase amount of collectible characters.

Holy crap, is that the first sales numbers we got for Lumines? And holy crap x2, did they just say it was one of the most popular launch titles?

Holy crap.

Well 40k might be accurate. One of the most popular? Not by a longshot.

As of this week:

Minna no Golf: 227k
Dynasty Warriors: 207k
Ridge Racers: 216k
Piposaru Academy: 76k
Combat Mahjong: 55k
Fafner: 17k
Rengoku: 16k

Metal Gear Ac!d has most likely broken 80k by now, and I'm pretty sure just about every other game has probably sold 50k with the exception of the two budget AI titles. Fafner and Rengoku are VERY crappy games that came out last week, the fact that they've already sold about 17k each means that they'll most likely end up with 50k at the very least, since they're still on the charts and Lumines has vanished off even the top 30 charts every week ever since release (where it did like 7k on launch day). Welcome to the sad reality of Lumines. :(

Is this the best selling Mizuguchi game so far?

Rez PS2 did 20k in the US and 28k in Japan thereabouts.

Space Channel 5 PS2 did 7,800 in the US and 10k in Japan thereabouts.

Space Channel 5 DC did about 98k in Japan.

At this rate, I don't expect Meteos to break 50k. :lol

Are you nuts?

SEGA RALLY
SPACE CHANNEL 5
SPACE CHANNEL 5 Part 2
REZ

Rez sold ~100k worldwide. Those other titles most likely outsold Rez.

Lumines is selling so-so. However, it doesnt have to do 100k+ to make money.

Low budget games don't need high sales #. 40k may be great for that kind of game and development.

Good to know that someone here is taking an active step in communicating with a developer to notify him that there's a few smart people who care about the localization process and strongly dislike the usual localization scewups.

until we hear back from tetsuo, i'm inclined to believe the worst about the "skin changes"

I usually like getting the US version, in order to support the release of "niche" titles over here, but if they're going to fuck with it, I'll import.

I doubt it will be 50$USD, but either way I'm sold! I bought the import.. I fell in love with the game really challanging.

Well, I fired off an email to Mizuguchi-san as well as the CEO of Q Entertainment. We will see if they reply in a timely manner; however, since they are knee deep in Meteos right now, I wouldn't be surprised if this took a while.

I asked:
1) Are you still using Mondo Grosso and Eri Nobuchika?
2) Does "skin changes" mean new skins?
3) Can you tell me anything else about the US version?

MiZUguchi. Mizoguchi is the more common Japanese last name; however, in this case it is Tetsuya MIZUGUCHI. (Mee-Zoo-Goo-Chee)

You like the work of Minakuchi supervision. . . The っ て you say it is not. So, name of your Minakuchi supervision making a mistake, because the groove guti っ て you said. . . Regrettable? ? ? ! . . . . Hara-kiri

umm...ok.

HAHAHAHA. Sorry, I thought you spoke Japanese/lived in Japan.

That is a play off of a comedian in Japan right now called the Guitar Samurai, and his catch phrase is screaming ZANNEN at the top of his lungs.

Machine translation doesn't do that sentence any justice.

You like the work of Mizuguchi (director).... or so you say. But, You (rough) mistook Mizuguchi's name and said Mizoguchi instead, so ZANNNNNENNNNNNNNNNN. Kill yourself.

切腹

How do you say that? Seppuku or Hara-Kiri? I thought the correct one was seppuku and I don´t know where I heard that Hara-Kiri was wrong and even unrespectful (I´m not sure of that, that is why I ask, would like to know)

I'm a huge fan of japanese games/horror/animation, but sadly, the language-space in my brain is too crowded to learn japanese. Maybe if I suffer some brain damage, it'll free up enough space to learn another language.

I'm pretty sure there'll be licensing issues with using the music from Mondo Grosso and Eri Nobuchika in the US, so they may end up changing those skins, but everything else (produced internally) should be a-ok. Besides, "Lights" is in Japanese - there's no way that's gonna fly.

If the language of the music was ever a reason to pull it from a game, Katamari Damacy would have a total of one song, maybe two. As far as licensing issues go, maybe, I guess, but Ubisoft isn't exactly a small company with no weight and/or money to throw around. Also, Rez and its externally produced music made it over okay.

if i had to guess, maybe they'd cut down on some of the animation in some of the skins to speed up loading.

this would be regrettabled, but understandable.

it's not so much that i'm a perfectionist, but i hate getting an inferior version of a game because i live in the US (I'm looking at you Konami).

The largest ownages (wtf, I just said 'ownages'.... someone shoot me) usually happen when people don't mean to do it at all. It makes it all the more natural. :D

I dunno, I sort of doubt *every* game besides the AI games have broken 50k. Even established IPs like Vampire Chronicle and Puyo Puyo Fever didn't break 10k 1st week... granted launch period PSP games will likely have more shelf life than something on PS2, but I really doubt that only the AI series are under 50k. Hell Lumines is only 40k and it was getting a good amount of attention.

Also, Fafner is based on an anime license... which probably adds to it's sales, despite it being rather crappy. 17k 1st week is actually rather good for a PSP game.

I've already pre-ordered my PSP but with game prices like these it looks like it's going to be a media-player only for a while. There's no way that Sony will sell these games at $40-$50 for long. People won't buy them except the hard-core. We've been conditioned that $30 is a good price for a handheld game.

My prediction is that most of the games will drop at least $10-$20 within two months of launch, just to get more sales. I'm a patient man. Hell, I never pay more than $30 for any of my console games, either.

How long did it take the PS2 to launch their "Greatest Hits" line?

A year and a half.

IIRC, they launched the GH line in early 2002, after the "big christmas" of FFX, GTA, MGS2, and DMC.

They'd be stupid if they replaced the songs. Not only would they rape the target audience, but it would just waste unnecessary resources to replace the songs or skins or whatever

Oh, like japanophiles are such a huge audience. ;)

What they SHOULD do is if they happen to change the songs, somehow keep the originals as an unlockable. But people who are experiencing Lumines for the first time will not know or care for the J-pop selections.
