US Retail Musings for 8/17 - 8/23

So-so week overall. Schools are going back so foot traffic was down as expected. Overall Madden dominated the week again followed by a ok showing of Too Human.

Wii - 3 Wii's this week and a lot of Mario Kart. Mario Kart was still in stock as of tonight, but the wii's were sold within a few hours as usual. Nothing else to really say about the Wii.

DS - Sold all of our new Pokemon bundles other than that not much except for a couple random colors sold. Software wise was your basic Nintendogs, Brain Age and Imagine games with 1 Madden sold finally.

PS3 - Got a re-stock of 80gb's (4) and sold all but 1 as of tonight. Had a couple questions regarding the 160gb, but not much else. Completely sold out of Madden this week with a re-stock on Friday and sold out again tonight.

PSP - Nothing going on here at all...

PS2 - Again no systems other than used sold. Madden sold out on Friday night so we had none to sell all weekend even though we had people looking.

XB360 - Sold a few 60gb's and a couple Arcades. Quite a few used systems sold again. Madden dominated as usual. We still have it in stock though unlike the PS2/3. I would say between the two they are almost even in amount of copies sold with the 360 just ahead a little. Too Human....sold our initial stock on the first day (around 20) and then got restocked the next day and sold a total of 1 since then. VERY front-loaded as expected.

lets just get it out of the way, since everyone is thinking it. which sold more PS3 or 360?
btw I expect too human to do crazy numbers the first month and then totally die. I expect $29.99 retail price 3-4 months from now.

They actually sold even without used systems. With used systems the 360 sold more.

Regarding Hoffman's question...It fared pretty well with SCIV, but no where near MGS4/Madden.

Just wondering, how many used 360s sold, and how much are they? The last time I checked, the used systems at GS were $200 for what was basically an old core unit. Bodes well for the price drop, if that's the case.

Did you get restocked with 80gb MGS4 bundles or are you talking about the new 80gb core pack?

Also I'm surprised that you mention that a lot of people buy used XB360's. To me, that's just asking for trouble...

I find it interesting how little Nintendo seems to care about supplying Gamestop, and how insignificant that ends up being when the NPD numbers come in.

Just the core systems...MGS4's are done with. I'm just being honest about the sells :D If people don't like the fact we sell used thats not my problem heh

We sold 3-5 used...I can't remember the exact numbers and ya they are $200 with a wireless controller.

I work once a month at Gamestop. They don't give a fuck about Gamestop. Historically, Wal-Mart has already been huge for Nintendo. Take for example, we only got 12 Wii Fits while Wal-Mart got over 50.

If you don't mind, what are are you located in? Are titles like MGS4, Uncharted, and the newly price dropped Resistance selling?

What are preorders like for Little Big Planet? Resistance 2? Did you sell all those PS3s in one day, or was it gradually over the week?

Located in the Mid-West... MGS4 sells here and there same with Uncharted. We sold a few Resistance when it dropped.

LBP isn't pre-ordering too hot for us, R2 is in the teens. It was gradually over the week also.

edit: As I said in previous posts...PS3 doesn't tend to get a ton of reserves...lots of walk-ins, seems like a different crowd than the 360 which gets reserves like mad.

So does that mean the MGS4 bundle has been discontinued?

The people who are privy to LBP most likely wouldn't want to pre-order at GameStop anyway.

\shoots death-glare at Gamecrazy >_>

Most of the people that love LBP at this present day travels message boards and are in the gaming industry. Me and a PS3 fanatic at GS are the only two people that have it preordered at my Gamestop.

You'd really prefer a Kratos download to an actual sack or sticker book? Something that's tangible?

(at the very least, go for Nariko!)

Considering there are more Gamestops then other game stores, it would be harder to keep distribution high between all of them.

I believe so yes.

Sounds like my store almost

The distribution still seems to be fairly unbalanced, especially when compared to PS3 and 360 sales we get in these threads.

Everybody IS aware that each major retailer has a different pre-order bonus for LBP, right?

Any of them being an actual sackboy plush? It's the only bonus that matters to me personally =/.

If someone from the store near me posted it would be more in Nintendo's favor more than likely. They sell a lot more Nintendo stuff it seems for some reason...Don't get me wrong...we sell lots of Nintendo stuff. More DS/Wii stuff than it seems based off my posts, but a lot of it is Imagine titles or Summer Sports or Nicktoons or stuff like that.

The closest is the LittleBigPouch :\

I have the most criminally easy job, I just go there 4 hours a month to clean up shelves and restock them at Gamestop. Anyways, it is so weird to step outside of this world to spend substantial time in the real world. What you like and what the rest of the world likes differs in so many ways. It's why I said eariler today, the only games that come out this fall and winter that are guaranteed are Gears 2, Fallout 3, and Animal Crossing. My apologies for leaving out the music games eariler because they are going to sell as well.

When it comes to platformers, it's either Mario, or you better have a gimmick or some kind of pull. That is the status of platformers now. I was worried as hell about Banjo until the $39.99 price tag. I've not been in there since this was finally officially recognized by Microsoft. I'll find out how that is doing when I pick up Tales of Vesperia.

It isn't just about pre-orders, it's about buzz, it's about what people are coming in asking for. It's about store presence. When you work in a video game store, you can tell which way the wind is blowing generally.

I find a lot of this depends on the people staffed there.

You didn't answer my question.

And all I was talking about was why people wouldn't be pre-ordering at GS in addition to the usual trend of PS3 owners not pre-ordering games.

Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty 4, and Metal Gear Sold 4 disagrees with that, along with Madden and NCAA.

That very well could be...the only person in my store that actually plays the Wii is one of my employees who has 2 daughters. 3 of us own wii's but we honestly don't play it...2 of us are getting Mad World and thats it as of right now on Wii...the other one just gets kids games for his daughters.

Has it been announced which retailer is getting Nariko Sackgirl?

Not yet. It will probably be either Wal-Mart or Best Buy.

Hoping it's Wal-Mart so I can at least settle for the sticker book at Best Buy :(

Strider2K99 said:
Huh? They are. They have several different pre-order bonuses for different retailers.
Maybe I'm being overly critical, but Gears of War 2 has a LANCER. All we've been yelling about is a burlap doll.

Zoe said:
Except you'll be able to actually buy those.
Don't you think the oppurtunity to have a limited edition Sackboy, bundled with a deluxe version of the game which comes with a soundtrack, artbook, and fancy box is something worth preordering?

From my experience, Gamestop gets them quite a bit. It's just that there are so many stores(there are two in most malls!), so each one gets two to four(spread across 50 stores) versus 4-8 per store with Walmart spread over 15 stores.

Btw, I dunno if everyone knows it yet, but Gamecrazy will shamelessly give you 5 dollars back if you brought in your Gamestop receipt and get Madden there instead. :lol

I gotta tell you... we've been selling out of the PS2 Madden more than any other system. Customers find it halarious that we have to give away the new Bret Farve slips with the Jets jersey.

We just got our first shipment of 80GB and 160GB PS3s in two days ago. Sold two of them personaly yesterday.

Our 360s have been selling well. The 60GB have been selling at a faster pace than the 20GB. I haven't sold an Arcade or Elite in weeks.

Wiis is the same story I bet. We get them in they sell out in less than an hour.

Mass Effect has been doing well and suprisingly COD4 has been sold out again on 360 and only had a couple left on the PS3. People are still buying this game like crazy. Haven't sold too many Wii games. DS games have been flying off the shelf... mostly girly games like Fashion Designer and stuff like that.

I swear, about 3 out of 5 DS owners are girls that come to Electronics.

I would prefer the opportunity to buy each of those freely, which I plan to do with the sackboy. Multiple times.

That's what I expected from Too Human, most of its sales will be frontloaded as the game will have negative word of mouth. It's kinda surprising to see people buying used 360's too, it's pretty risky IMO but I guess they want things cheaper.

Hope it's not too off-topic to ask but what's the 360 Premium trade-in value is at Gamestop?

So do you think that I am right to susspect that LBP is going to sell poorly?

I think he was talking about Hardware reliability.

It sure is.

Unfortunately, it's not something that they're offering, so the point is moot.
